Take a look at this picture. It was taken today at our Salesforce offices in Tel-Aviv. It shows a few dozens of Salesforce Israel employees in one of our regular all-hands meetings. What's so special about that? Well, that picture was taken exactly 36 hours after Iran launched a massive aerial strike against Israel with 100s of UCAVs, ballistic and cruise missiles carrying about 60 tons(!) of explosives. Thanks to the Israeli Air force, the air forces of the US, UK, France, Jordan and others *and* Israeli innovation and engineering talent who developed the most advanced multi-layered air defense systems in the world - luckily that attack ended up with relatively low impact. It was a sleepless night for all us in Israel who got an advanced notice of the attack and basically spent that night bracing for impact. Now take another look at this picture. 36 hours later - People showing up at the office, talking to each other, having a few laughs, having meetings, discussing deadlines, solving business problems, discussing engineering problems, doing demos, having coffee and lunch together, having an all-hands meeting together. 36 hours ago we were bracing for impact of 60 tons of explosives that were about to fall out of the sky. TL;DR - You're likely overpaying for your cloud-database infrastructure, and it remains the weakest link in your SLA chain. When Tal Tamir and I embarked on our mission to optimize relational databases in the cloud with Rapydo, we initially didn't grasp the real root cause of high database costs. After engaging with hundreds of Amazon RDS users, we realized that high costs are merely a symptom of a few deeper issues. Cloud applications can scale infinitely, but your RDBMS cannot. This disparity creates a significant challenge: while your applications scale out seamlessly, your databases are limited to scaling up. This forces companies to prepare for worst-case scenario spikes around the clock. This challenge is particularly prevalent among the cloud-native businesses we spoke with, where over 90% rely heavily on RDBMS. Even with over-provisioning to handle potential application spikes, DevOps teams cannot be certain that the next spike will be absorbed by the available CPU and I/O resources. This uncertainty results in overpaying for database infrastructure while still facing the risk of performance bottlenecks. Israel is a giant playground if you can perceive it as such. One of my adventures in the corridors of Israeli academia (it’s a comedy. They all are) involved an esoteric investigation into a new class of numbers. There was a notion that there is a negative zero and a positive zero, and that it is somehow useful. I came in to the lab, understood what is required, and wrote the code that produces negative and positive zeros, and queries that perform statistical analysis on the outputs, etc, etc, etc. Negative zeros, positive zeros, perhaps useless in any case aside from slippage calculation in zero-ish trade thresholds. Two Years at HiBob: Lessons Learned and Shots Taken Today, I celebrate my second anniversary at HiBob, reflecting on a journey that profoundly deepened my commitment to a growth mindset. Just last week, our leadership team gathered for a retrospective that highlighted not just our successes but the spirit in which we achieve them. While one group showcased their exceptional completion of features for the Q, going 100% on their top priorities, it was Israel David’s, our CTO and cofounder,  reaction that truly encapsulated what HiBob is all about. He applauded their achievements but pushed us further with a critical question: "Everything’s green, yet,  are we truly challenging us?" ( in this case they challenged them selves, yet, the important point here is the question itself) Israel David’s question resonated deeply with me, sparking a reflection on our goals and methods. He likened our strategy to shooting from the three-point line in basketball, emphasizing that our real aim isn't merely to achieve the easily attainable but to set goals that challenge us to extend beyond our perceived limits, even if we risk missing. This mindset reflects the resilience and boldness I admire, by pushing past conventional boundaries. At HiBob , we're encouraged, at all levels,  not just to meet our targets but to engage with each challenge fully, learning from every attempt and growing with each project. Over these two years, I've embraced every opportunity to take my shot, successful or not, knowing each effort contributes to my growth. This culture of continual learning and pushing past comfort zones is what makes my time at HiBob truly transformative. Virtual Threads greatly improve the application throughput and overall responsiveness of Java applications. Just need to be careful about delegating the right kind of operations to Virtual threads - typically less CPU intensive and almost stateless in nature. For operations requiring external network/service calls, a traditional thread is still the way to go for resilience and performance both. This is my new work uniform: Two weeks ago several of my coworkers were fired for calling for an end to Project Nimbus - a joint contract between Google and Amazon signed in 2021 which provides cloud services to the Israeli government and its military. This was the most recent of many attempts by workers to end the contract. Google should not be providing its services to ANY military. As a global company with billions of users, in nearly every country, making more money than many GDPs, it is an abuse of power and inhumane. Any technology can be used for benefit or detriment. A hammer can build a house and also bash a skull. I’m proud of the technology that Google has developed to facilitate early cancer detection, connect people during crisis and facilitate accessibility. Those same technologies will be used by militaries to kill. Google has a duty to be a responsible steward of its products. Aside from the moral issues, Google’s military contracts are a sign of competitive weakness. To enter this space should be a sign to investors that Google is desperate to maintain revenue growth. Google is a publicly traded company owned by the totality of its shareholders - not its leadership.
