CISCO SYSTEMS & IDF Cisco Systems is a network solution provider headquartered in the U.S. Its subsidiary, Cisco Israel, broadly cooperates with the Israeli military. Moreover, it collaborates with the Israeli government to establish technological hubs, as part of the Digital Initiative that was launched in 2018. According to Who Profits, three of the ten hubs opened by October 2022 were located on occupied territory: two in the West Bank in the regional councils of the settlement of Mateh Binyamin and Shomron, and one in the Syrian Golan. Additional hubs are planned in the Modi’in Illit, Kiryat Arba and Beitar Illit settlements. The company reacted to a request for information in 2021 by stating that it is aiming to contribute to innovation, promote entrepreneurship and digital skills in partnership with the Government of Israel, but that the Israeli government installs the Webex boards, and that Cisco Israel is not involved in the decision-making on hub locations. Cisco’s activities are of concern, as the hubs aim to strengthen entrepreneurship and employment and, with this, benefit the existence, expansion, and sustainability of Israel’s settlement enterprise. Israeli Solution That Ensures Security of AI Copilot Raises $38 Million ZENITY, an Israeli startup which specializes in AI-based cybersecurity, raised $38 million in a Series B funding round led by Daniel Loeb's Third Point Ventures and DTCP. In total, Zenity raised $55 million. The new funding will accelerate development of the Zenity' product, and support Zenity’s expansion in North America. Zenity’s product protects AI copilots from cyber threats, as with the increased use of AI copilot by business users, attackers can exploit these applications by injecting malicious commands, poisoning data, and embedding hidden instructions into AI systems. The product is potentially interesting for financial organizations, pharmaceutical companies, and healthcare systems. Ben Kliger, CEO, and Michael Bargury, CTO, founded Zenity in 2021. As a result of the war, the Israeli defense industry and defense-tech companies have been at the forefront. In a recent article he wrote for @Calcalist, @Ofir Gomeh @Capital Nature CEO explains how we can leverage significant investments made in defense industries to achieve environmental sustainability and overcome climate change. Dual-use technology refers to technologies that can be used for both military and civilian purposes, thereby maximizing the advantages of advanced technologies. A drone is a great example of dual-use technology – on one hand, it can be used for military surveillance, and on the other hand, it can also be used to monitor climate-related changes such as methane and other GHG emissions monitoring, weather patterns, etc. In the article, Ofir provided more examples of dual-use technologies, including satellite technologies and green transportation. Defense industries and Israeli defense-tech companies can play a central role in dual-use technology. Investing in dedicated bodies like Capital Nature can provide the necessary network and market access for these technologies. Chair of our Cyber and Privacy Group, Adv. Haim Ravia, and the Israeli Population Authority, have agreed to settle a lawsuit that Haim Ravia filed against the Population Authority asserting violations of privacy. Under the settlement, the Population Authority is already underway deleting biometric facial images of Israeli residents who have traveled abroad, ensuring the photos cannot be recovered. The Population Authority also pledged to advance legislation limiting both the retention of these images and the period they can be stored.   The lawsuit focused on the authority’s unauthorized collection, storage, and sharing of biometric data with the Israeli Security Agency until February 2022. This important settlement, certified by the court last week, marks a significant win for privacy.
