So many homepages focus on how great the product is. But really, top-lines should make your customer *feel* something. If you can make your potential customer feel something in just 30 words or so, you're onto a winner. I stumbled across Wordtune's homepage this morning, and I think their top-line does a fantastic job for so many reasons: → As an AI writing tool, they could have gone down the functional route in the first line, or addressed concerns about the safety of the tech, like some of their competitors have. → Instead, they tap into the *feeling* of writing – the self-doubt, insecurity, and lack of confidence that often comes with getting your ideas out on a page. How many times have you sat staring at a jumble of words and felt crazy anxious about it? So it’s not just a product benefit they’re highlighting; they’re holding up a mirror to a character transformation. 🪄 They’re saying that when you use their product, you’ll become a better version of yourself. If you’re in ecom or marketing, watch this. It’s a perfect example of UGC. Why it works so well: 1. It feels organic. It’s not a glossy ad. It’s just a dude in his apartment. This makes people not immediately skip the video. 2. It’s entertaining. That doesn’t mean it’s funny, but it does have some entertainment value. It’s a contest. That naturally creates intrigue. 3. It shows how effective the product is while noting how much cheaper it is too. This appeals to people’s rational side. It’s clear proof that it’s better, at least in this one context. Study this, learn from it, and start implementing. P.S. Use this Klaviyo flow to unlock more sales every day, week and month. A time to top-up/replenishment flow on Klaviyo is going to be one of the most effective for your DTC biz. Here's a simple structure for you to try. - Use the Klaviyo predict next order as a starting point. (if you want to get more advanced then talk to the fine folk at Relo and Harry Willis) - I then put in a time delay, e.g. 3 days, to give the customer one last chance of topping up organically, without an email nudge. - Add a conditional flow: has placed an order at least once since starting this flow, -- Yes: exit -- No: send ‘time to top up’ email If they don’t order, you’re now at risk of them becoming inactive, so I would consider the following, - Wait 5 days (give them a bit of extra time before you roll out an incentive) - Conditional flow: has placed an order at least once since starting this flow, -- Yes: exit -- No: offer them an incentive to top up And then, again, if they haven’t ordered, I’d try one more time, - Wait 5 days - Conditional flow: has placed an order at least once since starting this flow, -- Yes: exit -- No: remind them about the incentive There you go. Amazon vs. TikTok Shops. Who ya got? For brands looking to add an eCommerce channel outside of DTC, these are probably the two most exciting options. So let's do a quick breakdown of Amazon vs. TikTok Shops (TTS): 1️⃣ Top-line eCommerce revenue. This one's not close. Amazon's been around forever and expected to do around $490B in 2024 (in the US). TTS is expected to grow to around $17.5B this year. Absolutely crazy number since it's been out for 12 months, but obviously this goes to Amazon. 2️⃣ Competition. Amazon has 1.1M sellers in the US. TTS is around 500k. So slightly less competition on TTS, but obviously a bit of a smaller pie. 3️⃣ Customers. Well, Amazon's customers are pretty much everyone in the US. 97% of TTS customers are also on Amazon. However TTS has a little bit of a bias towards younger and lower income customers. 4️⃣ Marketing Costs. This one's got some nuance. On Amazon, the main asset a brand needs to build are reviews. Getting enough reviews can be very time consuming and expensive. You can't directly pay for reviews, but many brands expect to either spend tens of thousands of dollars building enough reviews to compete. And in competitive spaces that require +1k reviews, it can be even more expensive and time-consuming. On TTS, it's possible to get started for less capital / effort, since the main cost is going to be product seeding (leaving out ads for both platforms). However, that investment needs to be continually made, because creators run out of products / audiences (whereas reviews last). So in the short run, TTS has much lower up-front marketing costs. Long-run Amazon probably has the advantage. 5️⃣ Meritocracy. If you've got a great product, I think TTS market gives the most honest feedback and can have a bigger impact. Advantage TTS. 6️⃣ Consistency. The opposite is true for predictability. While you are not totally in control of your destiny on either platform, it's easier to build a predictable business on Amazon. TTS has huge swings of virality and requires more consistent investment. 7️⃣ Platform Cost. Both are pretty expensive, but TTS wins here. Amazon charges on average around 15%. TTS is 8%. You're probably going to have a higher % of affiliate driven revenue on TTS, which can really push that number up, but on the whole TTS is cheaper. 8️⃣ Customer Retention. I don't think either are particularly great in this category, but the small advantage goes to Amazon. An Earnest Analytics study of credit card transactions showed that Amazon eComm customers are retained about 44% more (in a 5 month window). But that number is for the entire platform, and not the product / brand. So it's just going to be really low in either case. Anyway - pretty incredible that this conversation even exists given that TTS has been around officially for 12 months. I think the channel conversation is a really personal conversation for every brand... but hopefully this helps you get started!
