I am excited to share that my opinion piece about how Israeli startups are missing crucial funding opportunities was published in Calcalist כלכליסט. 📌 link to the article in the first comment In the article, I discuss an alarming trend I’m seeing firsthand: many Israeli startups are shutting down without fully exploring all their funding options, particularly when it comes to grants – both local and international. At Twinnovation, I spend a lot of time mentoring startup portfolios of VCs and accelerators, and regularly give lectures and webinars to help founders discover and access critical funding opportunities. What surprises me is how often these companies are hearing about grants for the first time from us. Even when they are aware, they typically only consider local grants and carry a lot of misconceptions about them. What can we do to change this? Startups need to broaden their horizons when it comes to funding. Applying for grants, whether on a national or international level, can be a critical lifeline. Israeli #founders today need to embrace design thinking This means focusing on the consumer who will be using the service or product that you’re developing The process may have been initially built without thorough consideration, but design thinking allows us to revisit and analyze what exactly is needed in the most efficient way As an example, processes may have been accepted as they are, until someone comes along and suggests a better way... and when that person steps in and proposes a fresh perspective, that's when #innovation happens At its core, design thinking is about understanding what is truly necessary in a process or action, and determining if it can be done differently, and is the ability to understand what the consumer really needs in any given situation or process, whether it's buying groceries, transportation, communication, etc. There are various methods and stages in design thinking. However, I use the Harvard Business School method, which has four stages, the first one being clarification The goal of clarification is to understand and identify the main pain point in the situation. This stage is about filtering out the noise and focusing on the situation at hand, to glean insights that may have been overlooked or undervalued before Often, this pain point is latent, something the consumer experiences but doesn't recognize as the main issue. The methods used at this stage involve observing the situation, being present in the space, and trying to understand what is missing and how the process can be improved The key is to gain a different perspective or insight that others haven't yet identified. If you can solve a problem that everyone is experiencing, then you potentially have a good business idea…. A prime example of the importance of being customer or human-centered, which is at the core of design thinking, is Google's failed Google Glasses project. Google invested about a billion dollars to develop this unique device, but after years of development and attempts to market it, they had to shut it down Why? Because no one was buying it! The product didn't solve a problem for anyone… it was a "nice to have" but not a "must-have" In design thinking, we're looking for solutions to real problems There are three must-have attributes in design thinking to determine if a product is worth investing in: Desirability Feasibility And viability If a product lacks any of these characteristics, it's not a go. These three characteristics are crucial in testing if a product is worth developing and investing time and resources into. Over the past decade, I have reviewed over 1,000 cv's in search for the best team members to join our team. I see a lot of people in Israel in need of jobs these days so sharing some tips from my experience as a manager and Organizational Psychologist that I hope can be helpful. If you have any questions or additional insights, please feel free to comment below or pm me. I divided the job-seeking journey into 4 stages: 1. Self-reflection 2. CV building 3. Networking 4. “Dating” your future boss In this post I will cover some pointers for the first 3 stages. Next post will cover pointers for the last stage. *Self-reflection* 1. Self-reflection and understanding what you are good at and what you are passionate about. 2. Who are you - Need to be able to answer this in 2-3 lines at the top of the CV. Are you a manager and looking to be in a leadership role or more of a hands-on executive? Is your focus marketing/sales/coding/project management? Pro tip: Ask your friends to be honest with you and share the value they see you bring. It will crystalize your own view as well. *CV and LinkedIn profile* 1. CV building - how does your future boss know you are great at what you do? What success and impact did you have that you can articulate with numbers? 2. The design is great. But the most important is the content. Make sure clear description in the header what you do and keep it short, with bullet points and a 1-pager. Make sure no mistakes. If there is even 1 typo, it is a no-go. 3. Passion talks. Years ago I hired a young man with very little experience because he came with great passion and told me how he taught himself code at age 11. See how you can find that story that highlights your greatness. *Networking* 1. Networking and asking friends for an intro or to put in a good word. Identify 10 people you will have coffee with to brainstorm your career. Some will give you great advice. Others will give you a good lead. 2. Don't only think about networking with those who can give you the job today but rather with those who know people that can help you. 3. The best way to build trust is to show your work in action. I once hired someone because he reached out and explained to me in a loom video why one of my client websites stinked and how that can be fixed. He didn't tell me what he does but showed me. What tips have you found as a manager that you would give future employees?

IVC Data and Insights report on the Israeli venture market for Q1-Q3 2024 reveals: - $7.4 billion invested in Israeli startups, surpassing the entire 2023 total of $6.9 billion. - $13 billion generated from exits, a 26% increase from 2023's $10.4 billion. - 23% surge in foreign investments year-over-year. - 67% of capital sourced from global investors, with 33% from Israeli funds. - $2.7 billion secured by early-stage startups, the second-highest figure in Israeli startup ecosystem history (after 2022's record). 10 Mistakes to avoid in Global Hiring: We recently acquired updated stats of Israeli startups (we won’t mention the companies here) that hired and fired CRO’s, VP Sales and Enterprise Account Exec’s in the U.S. after only 6-12 months on the job! The damage to these companies in revenue, customer satisfaction/retention, overall image (from both customers and potential hires) is dramatic, has a price tag, and in most cases could have been avoided.
