Bank of Ireland Kernel Capital Growth Fund portfolio Company ALTRATECH LIMITED has been selected to receive up to €10.5m in blended funding from the European Innovation Council Accelerator Program. #News: A new report estimates that #biopharma jobs in #Ireland will grow by 21,000 in the next three years as demand for skills in this fast-growing space soars. In a report titled Skills for Biopharma, the Expert Group on Future Skills Needs (EGFSN) said that the additional jobs will be created by 2027 to support the biopharma sector, which has been growing steadily over the past five years. Biopharma is a linchpin of the Irish tech ecosystem, employing tens of thousands of highly skilled workers across a variety of roles. The sector also continues to see strong demand from fresh graduates across the country. Minister for Enterprise, Trade and Employment Peter Burke, TD, said the biopharma sector is “central” to Ireland’s economic success and has been for many years. “This report shows that we expect strong growth in the sector requiring a continuing inflow of skilled workers. It is essential that Ireland rises to the challenge of providing the educated and trained workers needed to support this growth,” he said. According to Burke, the biopharma sector employs more than 50,000 people directly in Ireland. Gardaí have raised concerns drug traffickers could set up their own laboratories in Ireland to manufacture synthetic opioids given the dramatic changes in the drug market. Sources point out that Ireland has already seen the emergence of new substances, including nitazene, a super-strong synthetic opioid, in the last year — with mass outbreaks across country — and, earlier this month, synthetic benzodiazepines in Portlaoise Prison. The increased supply of synthetic opioids into Europe is being linked with the almost complete collapse of opium production in Afghanistan last year as a result of a 2022 ban by the extremist Taliban regime. This has meant the supply of heroin into Europe is largely coming from stockpiles, with authorities unsure as to when those stores will run out. UN and EU drug agencies are concerned drug traffickers will turn to synthetic opioids to fill much of the market in Europe. "It the diversification of drug trafficking networks and is the future challenge,” a Garda source said. “It's very difficult to deal with. Labs will be set up everywhere and Ireland is not immune.” EU drug agencies are concerned at the potential spread of nitazenes, including any move to start manufacturing the drug in Europe given the presence of drug laboratories on the continent. The EU police agency Europol on Friday released details of an operation by Polish and Ukrainian authorities which uncovered a massive synthetic opioid laboratory network. Police, assisted by Europol, raided seven linked labs and seized 195kgs of "crystal methadone", a substance that European sources told the Irish Examiner has not been seen within the EU. It is thought this substance may have been for the Ukraine market. Methadone is prescribed in the treatment of heroin addiction in Ireland, but illegal crystal methadone is far more powerful. Polish police also uncovered 153kgs of Alpha-PVP, used in the production of mephedrone, a synthetic cathinone, a popular stimulant drug. The operation came as a drug-testing service in Britain, Mandrake, which is attached to Manchester Polythetic University, said the current illicit drugs market “has never been more dangerous” and cited the circulation of “extremely dangerous pills” containing nitazenes. Here's a follow-up I put together... The importance of application security made the news last week when HSE experienced a data breach on their COVID vaccination portal built on Salesforce. According to HSE, development teams were under time pressure to get the portal up and running to meet the vaccination campaign timeline. The latest blog from DigitSec (https://lnkd.in/gzjBKdEn) discussed why securing code for Salesforce applications is critical in the healthcare industry. These types of breaches validate the necessity for cybersecurity and development teams to work together to identify vulnerabilities and mitigate risk. This is a classic example of how threat actors exploit vulnerabilities to exfiltrate valuable PII and place users at risk. Medicines for Ireland believes in digitalising and harmonising the generic, biosimilar, and value-added medicines industry in Ireland and across the EU to streamline processes, enhance efficiency, and improve the environmental impact it creates. The European Medicines Verification System (EMVS) is valuable in monitoring and predicting medicine shortages across the EU. MFI, along with our sister organisation, Medicines for Europe, is calling on the European Council to include its use in the revision of the pharmaceutical legislation. As an existing EU-wide system, the EMVS is already authorised to monitor the supply status of products. By integrating EMVS data with the European Shortages Monitoring Platform (ESMP), where 70-80% of the necessary information is already available, authorities can track when and how medicinal products are distributed across markets. This would allow for early intervention to prevent supply chain bottlenecks, making the system a critical tool in ensuring the resilience of medicine supply chains. Moving away from outdated systems for direct healthcare professional communications (DCHP), which require each Market Authorisation Holder (MAH) to produce the same information pack for each medicine they supply for every healthcare professional (HCP), would significantly reduce the industry's environmental impact. Efforts towards a digital system within the system are progressing, however, greater political support could expedite its progress. Similarly, the pan-European adoption of electronic patient information leaflets (E-PIL) would reduce the industry’s environmental impact while also significantly enabling MFI members to adapt to market fluctuations and efficiently and swiftly distribute products. Finally, we will continue to find the balance between investments in sustainability and protecting access to affordable essential medicines for Irish patients. While MFI and its members are committed to taking progressive steps to minimise its environmental impact, consultation is critical to ensure there are no unintended consequences due to the legislative and regulatory decisions taken.
