Constantly complaining about a job you have been unhappy in for a long period of time without doing anything about it is like living in Ireland and complaining every time it rains. One of the rewarding parts of working in recruitment is helping someone get out of a role they have been unhappy in. Some examples have been: ▶️ Finding a company that offers more remote work so you can spend more time with your family instead of commuting. ▶️Finding a role that pays your worth instead of getting small increases in your current role while your responsibilities are dramatically increasing. ▶️Finding a company that rewards high performance compared to the false promises you have received in the past on promotions etc. ▶️Finding a manager that you actually like working for whi pushes you to get to the next level of your career. If you are unhappy in your role that's not going to change, your 2 options are to either lower your expectations and accept it or go out and find a role that gives you what you deserve. I think you know what is the best route!

According to research from StepStone Group nearly half of Irish jobseekers would refuse a job offer if there were no hybrid or fully remote working options offered, according to new research from The Stepstone Group, the parent company of jobs website IrishJobs. This compares to a global average of 29%. it is not only about the attraction of candidates but also the retention of workers. RTE Brian O'Donovan What do you think? A flexible approach seems to be the best solution, though many employers are just unsure of how toi manage this in a way that is fair but also meets the company's needs. In an interesting insight shared by Mark Flood, Ikea, which was losing $5k for every lost employee, embarked on a major overhaul of its practices. It targeted employee pain points centred on pay and benefits, scheduling, new-hire orientation, new uniforms and even AI tools which alerted managers if employees were at risk of quitting. These tweaks have seen worker attrition fall from 34% and 35% in 2022 in the US and UK, respectively, to 25% and 22% as of 2024. The effect has been amplified in Ireland, with worker attrition falling from 37% to 21%. Aside from pay rises across many regions, some examples of Ikea’s changes include: One woman with a 2-hour daily commute for 4 six-hour shifts tweaking her schedule to allow 3 eight-hour shifts per week. In India, subsidised daycare for parents, compressed work weeks and more parental leave have been introduced. In the US, an online shift scheduling tool, which allowed employees at the same level to swap shifts if something came up, without the need for manager approval or the previous paper-heavy sign-off process. A focus on training programmes to allow employees to move departments within the company. The world of work has evolved significantly over the past few years. Pay-related issues will always be in focus, but the Ikea example demonstrates, at least in part, that flexibility has become a huge driver of employee satisfaction and ultimately retention. Pay rises help in the short-term, but it’s clear that listening to employees and solving some of their pains will be the reason they stay on the journey for the long-term.​​​​​​ Source: Bloomberg

Hiring people to get Renewable Energy projects in Italy to 'Ready to Build' phase? Difficile. Impegnativo. Having been in the recruitment industry for over 9 years, the Renewable Energy market in Italy is one of the least mature and fastest growing I have worked in. The biggest problem? There simply aren't enough experienced candidates for the amount of new positions out there. Therefore, a candidate with a few years experience can secure multiple interviews when looking at the market, and their current employee will do everything to try to keep them. It's very hard to secure talent, particularly in Origination, Development and Engineering. Using all my experience and knowledge from the wider Piper Maddox team, we go deep into candidates motivations during the screening process and will go out of our way to only match them with relevant opportunities.
