Recent amendments to the attached Chartered Accountants Ireland CPD Regulations have facilitated simplification of how our members confirm compliance with their CPD requirements and the Institute’s Code of Ethics. Henceforth, by paying their annual membership subscription, or permitting this to be paid on their behalf, or otherwise renewing their membership, members are automatically acknowledging CPD compliance and their awareness of Code of Ethics obligations. As a consequence, members generally will no longer have to submit an annual declaration (the Individual Annual Return) in respect of these matters. Please note, that Responsible Individuals (statutory auditors) in audit firms registered by the Institute remain subject to a separate CPD compliance regime based on Irish company law and IAASA requirements. Good to hear the Governement is considering scrapping the proposed changes to CGT retirement relief on the transfer of business. The proposed changes , if implemented, would have resulted in some businesses not being transferred until the current owner passed away or being sold to fund the tax. With the need to encourage Irish companies to scale and remain with family owners inappropriate tax provisions would have a negative effect . Forvis Mazars were delighted to assist various organisations in highlighting the practical impact of poorly researched legislative proposals. Perhaps a bit more consultation on the impact of proposed legislative changes would be best all round in the future.

Our latest CFO Survey is published today - read the summary report at the below link. Whilst there is still high levels of uncertainty among CFOs; expectations around Revenue (3 in 4 expect revenues to increase over the next 12 months) and inflation (expectations that this will be 3% for next 12 months) compounded by interest rate reductions sees 60% of Irish CFOs more optimistic about their business than they were six months ago (and Irish CFOs are nearly twice as optimistic as the European average!!). Very interesting analysis from Chartered Accountants Ireland on the recent budget and it's lack of assistance for the SME sector. Budget 2025 includes substantial tax cuts and cost-of-living relief totaling €3.2 billion, aiming to attract individual voters ahead of upcoming elections. Taxpayers benefit from income tax cuts, credits, and energy subsidies, making many €1,000 better off. However, small businesses feel overlooked, receiving only minimal aid while facing increased labor costs, including a rise in minimum wage and pension costs. Despite expectations, no direct measures were introduced to reduce employers' PRSI to relieve these burdens, with critics noting that targeting voters took precedence over structural business support. This budget’s focus on personal giveaways may stimulate short-term consumer support but misses an opportunity for balanced economic sustainability, leaving SMEs with mounting cost pressures. Great to meet Minister Jack Chambers this week with the team in Chartered Accountants Ireland to discuss the CCAB-I's Pre Budget 2025 submission. Thanks to the Minister and his colleagues for such an open, frank and engaging discussion.
