The Irish Government Economic & Evaluation Service (IGEES) held its Annual Conference, last Wednesday at the Clayton Hotel 🏨 . With the aim of furthering an integrated cross-government service to support better policy formulation and implementation in the civil service through economic analysis and evaluation. Some of the topics covered include: -       Ireland’s Offshore Renewable Energy Strategy ‘Powering Prosperity’ -       Defence Forces, the Naval Service, and Irish Public Finances ⚓ -       Security Environment Assessment -       An Analysis of Housing Affordability and Market Access 🏘️ -       Review of the Basic Income for the Arts for the Arts 🎭 -       Spending Review of Specialist Disability Services in Ireland -       Distributional Analysis of Tax & Welfare measures in Budget 2025 The IGEES is fully integrated into the civil service, and the Annual Conference is one of the highlights in the year for Department of Public Expenditure and Reform. The Irish Government Economic & Evaluation Service (IGEES) Careers Fair Roadshow began this week. IGEES staff attended a number of careers fairs around the country to talk to students about graduate opportunities with IGEES. The team visited: 🔸 Trinity College Dublin on Tuesday 🔹 University of Galway on Wednesday 🔸 University of Limerick on Thursday Thanks to everyone who stopped by to learn about the role of an IGEES Administrative Officer and how it contributes to informing policy development and decision making within government. On Saturday, Rowena Dwyer, Head of the Irish Government Economic & Evaluation Service (IGEES), chaired a panel discussion at the Dublin Economics Workshop. The panel was on ‘Labour market, skills needs and future economic growth’. Panellists included: 🔸 Harry Williamson, IGEES and Department of Finance Ireland 🔹 Dr. Dermot P. Coates, IGEES and Department of Enterprise, Trade and Employment 🔸 Linda Kane, IGEES and Department of Enterprise, Trade and Employment 🔹 Joan McNaboe, SOLAS (An tSeirbhís Oideachais Leanúnaigh agus Scileanna) 🔸 Eoin Morton, Skillnet Ireland 👏 Thanks to everyone who attended the panel discussion and engaged in lively discussion and debate.

This week saw the IGEES Central Unit welcome our 2024 Interns to a three-day series of presentation events. 37 interns presented their work from the last 12 weeks to their IGEES colleagues and managers from across Government Departments. The wonderful Atrium Conference Room in the Department of Justice was the venue for our first two days of presentations, and on Thursday, we moved to the TK Whitaker Conference Room in the Department of Public Expenditure NDP and Reform. Day 1 proceedings were Chaired by Deirdre Coy from the Department of Health, followed on Day 2 by Linda Kane, Department of Enterprise, Trade and Employment, and finally, Day 3 was chaired by the Head of IGEES, Rowena Dwyer.    The high level of presentations on show over the course of the three days is a testament to each interns’ commitment and desire to deliver insightful and impactful analysis over the course of their respective internships. Yesterday (Monday 13 May) the Department of Public Expenditure, NDP Delivery and Reform held the first of two Knowledge Sharing Symposia on Disability Policy. Representatives from Government Departments, disabled persons organisations, service delivery organisations and the research community came together to discuss the challenges and opportunities for Strengthening Data & Evidence to improve policymaking and outcomes. The symposia are a key initiative under Better Public Services - the Public Service Transformation Strategy, focusing on Evidence-informed policy and services designed for and with our public. Over the course of the day, participants took part in presentations, panel discussions and workshops, providing insights and experience from a diverse range of perspectives. Contributors on the day included Department of Children, Equality, Disability, Integration and Youth, the Independent Living Movement Ireland , the National Disability Authority, the CSO (Central Statistics Office Ireland), the National Federation of Voluntary Bodies, AsIAm - Ireland’s Autism Charity, the Department of Social Protection and the Department of Public Expenditure, NDP Delivery and Reform.

Congratulations to IGEES Economist/Policy Analysts Aoidean Delaney (Department of Social Protection), Niamh Foley (Department of Public Expenditure, NDP Delivery, and Reform), Hannah Cousins (Department of Finance), and Mahnoor Tanwir (Department of Health), who were all selected to present their outstanding analytical work at the poster session of the Central Bank of Ireland's annual Nollaig na mBan event this past Tuesday the 9th of January.
