Today marks Fíbín Theatre’s 21st birthday—a moment to celebrate the productions, places, people, and countless joyful memories that have shaped our journey. It is with profound sadness, however, that I announce Fíbín Theatre will cease operations on December 31, 2024. This decision arises from a lack of supportive policy, funding, and vision from some state bodies toward Irish-language theatre, which has been disheartening given that Irish is our first official language. The barriers they’ve put up have made it incredibly challenging to grow and thrive in an already difficult industry.
There are too many people to thank for their invaluable contributions over the years, but I’d like to honour a few individuals. Rod Goodall, who was with us from our very first production and helped define our voice. Pete Nelson, you built countless beautiful sets, some of the best your own designs. Brendan Murray directed An Triail, our longest-touring production, which has introduced thousands of students to quality theatre since it began in 2008 and opens for its final tour in Galway before going to a sell out run in Dublin this week. With Paul Mercier we produced Sétanta in 2013, the first Irish-language production to be produced in association with the Abbey Theatre in 25 years. He also wrote and directed Réiltín, the first Irish-language play to open in Manhattan since 1884. And to Philip Doherty, who brought his incredible energy to our large-scale productions, including FIACH—one of the few live performances that took place during the pandemic—thank you!
When we started in 2003, there were five theatre companies on the island of Ireland. Twenty-one years later, we are the last independent Irish language company. We are finishing on a high, with sell out productions, co-producing with the national theatre of Galicia, street spectacles and performing with Coldplay for 4 glorious nights in Croke park! I hope that policies will shift and new companies will emerge with the support they deserve. There is an audience, and it is growing, but decision-makers must recognise and support our unique cultural perspective.
Lastly I want to thank the amazing team in Fíbín - Pearse, Isobel, Jay and Kevin for amazing work during very challenging times, my board who have been so supportive through good and bad. Also a special mention to founding members Alastair Mac Aindreasa and Micheál Ó Domhnaill who came up with the name 'Fíbín' and kick tarted the company back in 2003, I'm grateful for his energy and passion and I learnt a huge amount from him. Tá mé fíorbhuíoch.
We are now channeling our passion and creativity into producing screen content at Fíbín Media. Indeed, we are excited to work in an industry that takes a progressive approach and values creativity in the language.

Go raibh míle maith agaibh!
