Last Friday, our Sustainability Strategist Erin Maher had the opportunity to speak on a panel at the Institute of International and European Affairs. This panel of climate, policy and industry experts aimed to assess whether COP 29 achieved its aims and what the future holds for the COP process. The other panellists included Dr Sinead Walsh, Climate Director, Department of Foreign Affairs, Ireland, Jerry Mac Evilly, Head of Policy at Friends of the Earth Ireland, and Sam Peacock, Managing Director, Corporate Affairs, Regulation and Strategy at SSE plc. This interesting discussion was chaired by Alex White SC and with Barry Colfer and Rob McDowell, SSE. Hearing the insights of all panellists was incredibly valuable and we are grateful for this opportunity! Through discussions of the highly anticipated finance goal, who was in the room for negotiations, and what expectations we have for outcomes and moving into COP 30, we were able to have a robust conversation. The differing expertise of each panellist came together to give a well rounded overview of the COP process while touching on key issues like meaningful mitigation and adaptation action, accessible and adequate finance, and international cooperation. We are looking forward to discussing COP more in our upcoming podcast. Stay tuned for more!

Last week our founder Donal Quinn had the honour of bringing ENSO to Web Summit in Lisbon as part of the Irish Startup Initiative. The ENSO stand was buzzing with activity on exhibition day with a lot of great sales, partnership & investment conversations taking place. Some key learnings from the event: 🌱 Sustainability is a huge challenge for large organisations and startups alike - but it is now clear no business can ignore it if they want to grow and scale. 🤖 AI is the buzzword of the year with a lot of businesses trying to use it as a silver bullet to to fix issues and beat competition. However it is still a tool that should be used as such, to help us cut out menial tasks and aid innovation - not replace it. 🚀 Growth is fuelled by innovation in tech, alongside human ingenuity. In a world of tech hyper-growth, focusing on people has never been more important for businesses to build culture and make an impact. 🎤 Pharrell Williams “Your life is a gift - The present is a gift, that’s why they call it the present - It’s a gift and you have to give back to that which was given to you.” Thank you to Richard Forde and the amazing Web Summit Ireland team for organising a fantastic event and promoting #IrishStartups.

Yesterday, our Sustainability Strategist and Advisor, Erin Maher, was able to attend Sustainable Cork Programme: Infrastructure and Biodiversity: Sustaining Cork’s Future. The event was hosted by Cork Chamber in association with Cork Chamber Skillnet, ESB Generation & Trading, and Statkraft at the Education, Conservation and Research Centre at Fota Wildlife Park. This event was incredibly informative, covering interesting topics relating to biodiversity, infrastructure, and our role as businesses. Facilitated by Maria Kirrane (Head of Sustainability and Climate Action, University College Cork), an expert panel consisting of Henry Bouchier (Manager, Civil, Environmental and Renewable Engineering, ESB Generation & Trading), Michael Goan (Urban Design and Sustainability Manager, Land Development Agency), and Colette Shirley (Director of Sustainability, Bank of Ireland), led an engaging discussion and answered audience questions. The panel highlighted practical actions like measuring baseline biodiversity, implementing no-mow green spaces, and understanding the potential and actual impacts your actions can have on local biodiversity. This conversation was particularly timely and important, as biodiversity considerations are included in #CSRD reporting. Whether you are directly in scope of the legislation or in the value chain of a reporting, understanding, measuring, and acting to improve your impact on biodiversity is key. Specific biodiversity considerations that are included in #CSRD reporting include actions taken to protect ecosystems and positive or negative impacts on local biodiversity. As an SME, the best way to get started with biodiversity and prepare for information requests is to map, measure, and understand your current impacts. This may include starting with learning and taking advantage of educational opportunities like Sustainable Cork Programme: Infrastructure and Biodiversity: Sustaining Cork’s Future. After the panel discussion, a group from many different businesses hopped on a bus and went to the ESB Aghada Power Station for a tour and discussion of the future of energy production, transmission, and providers in Ireland. We discussed the necessity for batteries to help stabilise the grid in times of high demand or low output from renewables as well as how the plant has changed and become more efficient over time. The team who showed us around was very knowledgeable and answered all questions thoroughly. It was an incredibly interesting and unique experience! Throughout the day, Erin was able to engage with other passionate professionals from all different industries who all cared about making a positive impact. We are so excited to be a part of the Cork Chamber community! Thank you to the event organisers for an incredible day! #biodiversity #infrastructure #sdgs #sustainability 🌱
