Damien Gaynor, Echelon’s CMO, will take part in a panel discussion at the Data Centres Ireland Exhibition and Conference at the RDS in Dublin next week. He'll be discussing the ‘Regionalisation of Data Centres – The Future Solution’ at 3pm on the 20th of November, in a session moderated by David McAuley, CEO of Bitpower.ie The next generation of data centres will be bigger, more powerful, and less constrained by location. This means more regional locations, where they can be closer to renewables and can drive economic development. We’re looking forward to hearing from Damien and all the other speakers and panellists over the two days of Data Centres Ireland, which promises to provide thoughtful insight and interactions across our industry. #EchelonDataCentres #DataCentresIreland #Exhibition #Conference

“Every data center is turning into an AI factory. It’s not measured in flops or megawatts, but tokens per second and how many terabytes of data you are turning into productivity gains for your company”, Nvidia’s Ian Buck stated. This opportunity, which has already led to a significant change in the construction of data centres, has led to a staggering shift in the rush of how new data centres are built “But they can’t wait two years for a construction project. So we’ve seen an acceleration of people retiring old infrastructure, they’re simply just moving out their CPA infrastructure, moving in their GPUs and accelerating, so that every data center can be an AI factory” Buck reaffirmed. This has the potential to be a temporary bubble, however, there is a very real chance we are in the middle of a global shift that will continue going forward “What you’re going to see is not just one GPU from Nvidia, but a mix of platforms and ecosystems, allowing everyone to build the right kind of AI factory and workload that they need. Everyone will be at different phases of that journey or different optimization points”. Congratulations to Niamh Brophy on her marathon effort! Niamh, from Hollywood, Co Wicklow, was due to run the Dublin Marathon last Sunday. However, she decided it was more important to cheer on her local GAA club in the Darcy Sands Intermediate Football Final replay. So instead of joining 18,000 people pounding the streets of Dublin, Niamh took the scenic route from her home through Donard, Knockanarrigan, and Asknagap – covering the full 42km marathon distance across a tough Wicklow route before finishing in Aughrim, ready to cheer on Hollywood at Echelon Park! Congratulations to Niamh on her incredible achievement. Hers is the story of the GAA – a story of passion, support, and loyalty found in communities throughout Wicklow and Ireland. Hard luck to Hollywood but congratulations to Carnew Emmets, who claimed victory in the final despite a stirring second-half fightback where Hollywood ran them close. #EchelonDataCentres #WicklowGAA #WhereWeAllBelong

The global market for AI-related products will hit $990bn in 2027, Bain & Company have said. This growth will be fueled by bigger AI systems and will need bigger data centres to train and run them, which will be driven by governments and companies using these systems to boost efficiency. This increased demand for AI-related data will require much larger data centres requiring more power. “These changes are expected to have huge implications on the ecosystems that support data centers including infrastructure engineering, power production, and cooling”, the consultancy said in a statement. Data centre operators are aggressively aiming to mitigate emissions as early as 2030, with the industry considered one of the leading sectors in the push toward limiting global warming. Those in charge of data centres are savvy energy purchasers, already having a leg up when contracting power, which crucially includes renewable power sources. This ensures that data centres are perfectly positioned towards using renewable fuel sources, maximising ways to optimise energy consumption, and decarbonise their value chain. Data centres must ensure that they track and report on emissions to all stakeholders, holding themselves accountable for the critical role that they will hold going forward in the push towards a more sustainable world. DNV, a Norwegian risk management company, has said that the impact of data centres and AI on energy demand may be smaller than initial predictions. A prior forecast from McKinsey & Company that proposed AI power demand of 12% for the US market by 2030, has now been reduced to just 3.1% in an estimate by DNV. They have suggested that the energy needs of AI will not change the course of the transition to more renewable energy sources. “We believe that AI is strongly subject to Amara’s law: its impact is overestimated in the short term and underestimated in the long run”, DNV wrote in their report. Further investment will be critical to ensure reliable and secure energy provision for data centres over the next decade, even as Europe begins to lag behind in AI-related tech growth as, globally, the AI sector is booming. The economic potential of AI remains significant however, with McKinsey estimating that generative AI could contribute €521 billion to the European economy by 2030. Data centres will be key to realising the economic benefits of AI and for Europe to take a leadership position. Investment in grid infrastructure and in renewable power generation across the region is an imperative. Data centres can act as a catalyst for reducing carbon emissions going forward, given their inevitable role as a cornerstone of advanced economies in the future. Rather than hindering the energy supply to data centres, facilitating the development of more data centres and using their presence as a catalyst to develop more renewable energy sources while providing a pipeline of demand for it should be the way forward in Ireland. The decarbonisation of our electricity generation, combined with the rush to facilitate the future energy demand of AI innovation, brings with it an opportunity to align the growth of the Irish tech industry with Irish national goals of decarbonisation. Invest in renewable energy sources and innovative technologies that make data centres more energy-efficient, and we can position Ireland as a global leader in both sectors simultaneously. Apple has pinned its hopes on new AI-powered software to boost falling iPhone sales, hedging its bet that generative AI features will convince millions of consumers to purchase the latest model. For the first time since the release of the original iPhone, Apple is now relying on AI-powered software as their selling point rather than the hardware on offer, a change that might signal a shift in the market going forward. Once again, this is going to mean a need for greater data centre capacity.
