I will share this without any shame, In the software development industry, the relationship between clients and companies can often be fraught with challenges—challenges that are not solely the fault of service providers. Just as clients can have negative experiences with extended teams, companies can suffer significantly from troublesome clients. When invoices are deliberately delayed or payments are withheld, it creates a toxic environment that undermines trust and cooperation. Such practices not only jeopardize the financial stability of the software company but also demoralize employees who are committed to delivering quality work. Canceling engagements without notice can leave teams scrambling and disrupt project timelines, leading to wasted resources and lost opportunities. Moreover, the coercive offering of unsolicited benefits to company employees, whether directly or indirectly, raises ethical concerns and can lead to a breakdown of professional integrity. These issues often arise from the client's intention, lack of faith in the product, or financial instability. It’s vital for the industry to address these disparities openly. Transparency and trust must be fostered on both sides for successful collaborations. Companies need to feel empowered to speak up about their experiences, fostering a healthier environment where mutual respect and fair practices become the norm, ensuring that everyone benefits from the partnership. 🕸 From CMS Basics to Market-Ready Speed 🚀 I've always believed that hands-on experience and speed are critical for our interns' success in the highly polarized web project market. At ArchLabs, we ensure that our interns aren't just familiar with the basics but are equipped to handle real-world projects efficiently. Take WordPress, for example. It's often considered a no-brainer for many, but we use it as an introductory CMS to teach our interns about backend architecture and segmentation. This foundation is crucial for understanding how a backend operates, something I noticed many interns initially lack. I remember the days when we were deeply involved with Joomla. Our devs who mastered it turned out to be exceptional backend developers. They understood the intricacies of development, even if some functionalities were missing from the wireframe. This kind of deep understanding is what we aim to instill in our interns. Speed is another essential element. Small project briefs from platforms like Upwork are often extremely simple and abstract. To excel in this environment, our interns need to complete 20-30 good projects to truly understand and forecast what customers want. These projects are tiny, with minimal briefing time, so protection is necessary. That's where our training at ArchLabs comes in. Our approach is to train interns to think like customers. For instance, check out how Ruchaka Lakshan was trained to brainstorm and complete a basic brochure site in just five working days. This is the speed we need to compete in the small project market. By fostering such skills, we not only protect our interns but also ensure they are market-ready, capable of delivering high-quality work under tight deadlines. How this one trick landed my senior dev client his first project on LinkedIn. In cold February 2024. A 30-year-old DevOps expert enrolled in our program. He already freelanced for 4 years but… Always got his clients through 3rd-party agencies. Now he wanted to use LinkedIn to get clients directly. Over the years of managing talented developers at COXIT, I’ve seen firsthand how the proper workspace setup can significantly boost productivity and job satisfaction. Based on my personal experience and that of our developers, here are a few suggestions: My personal productivity boosters: - Quality keyboard and mouse: I use the Numphy Air V2 keyboard and Logitech MX Anywhere 3s mouse, and I couldn’t be more satisfied with them. - The right music choice: For me, it was Dubstep between 2011 and 2015, and since then, it has been a few Drum and Bass playlists. - Physical routine every few hours: Doing 20 push-ups and 20 squats makes the heart beat faster, stimulating the brain. - A 1-hour power nap: I try to split my day into two, so my productivity is revived after the first half-day sprint. Here are some more practices I try to maintain: - Keep physical and digital workspaces tidy (especially challenging when working from home). - Wear protective glasses and take regular breaks to look away from the screen every few hours. - Add greenery to both the office and personal workspaces. (This is something we've embraced at COXIT.) - Plan tasks ahead of time using sticky notes or handwritten reminders, a method I prefer. The goal is to create an environment that supports deep work, which is challenging considering the short attention spans many of us have these days. Explore other elements that might work for you—meditation, aromatherapy, power naps, or a standing desk—and incorporate them into your routine. Now, I’m curious about you. How do software companies develop products in 2024? The answer lies in which of the two philosophies wins: 1. "We build everything from scratch." 2. "We buy ready-made components to shorten time to market." Although there are many reasons for choosing the first, customer expectations mandate that companies EXCEL in many different areas, not solely in the core of their offering. 👉 Volkswagen Group buyers expect their cars to be safe. That's why Volkswagen relies on external providers such as Autoliv to enrich their cars with top-quality airbags. 👉 Atlassian customers expect to have a seamless payment experience. That's why the company uses Stripe to provide excellent payment infrastructure. 👉 Nearly every SaaS product user requires some level of (native) integrations. That's why SaaS companies rely on Appmixer to offer a seamless integration experience through a white-label platform. In my experience, companies that go the "Component as a Service" route win. They bring their products to market faster, with a fraction of the development resources, while delivering on customer expectations in every area. vidREACH reported saving 12 months for the launch of no-code automation features powered by Appmixer. IBM reported a 40% reduction in their development resources by leveraging JointJS. (These are achievements we heard directly from them, no bias.) The time savings are huge. Plus, the shorter the time to market, the sooner companies can test demand, experiment with monetization, raise capital, or upsell their existing customers. Sell before you build. Software-engineer-turned-founder tip no1: DO NOT BUILD ANYTHING UNTIL SOMEONE PAYS YOU FOR THE CONCEPT. This is hard for me. This hard for our whole cohort of 100M coding engineers world. We are born product first. 🧑‍💻 We think ICP: “user needs this” or “user needs that.” Guess what? User doesn’t need anything until they pay you for it. Trust me sis. Go sell. Build later. Arugubly building difficultly is all time low. With claude 3.5, cursor and vercel v0. And selling is also all time low. Imho we, as in gen z and alpha, lack great speaking skills So selling is a “high effort” item But sell before you build. In the startup world, everything is moving fast, and you can hardly finish a task before something else requires immediate attention. In this dynamic environment, user feedback is more than just valuable; it is essential. Our recent experience at Candleweb perfectly illustrates this point. Just yesterday, I had a two-hour conversation with one of our users who is also my medical doctor. When I saw his call, I thought it had to do with my health or something of the sort, but instead, we delved into a long conversation about our company’s product, CandleAI. He shared his thoughts on the beneficial features, but more importantly, he pointed out several areas where he believed the user experience could be significantly improved. And what was particularly striking about our conversation was that 95% of his suggestions were already in our development pipeline. As a team of customers ourselves, we had unknowingly identified many of the same pain points as other customers and were actively working on solutions. This validation from an external customer reaffirmed our direction and highlighted the importance of continuous user engagement. Michael Seibel always emphasises that it pays if the founding team of a company are customers themselves. This advice has resonated with us deeply, and our recent experience has finally made it crystal clear. When you live the problem you are trying to solve, you gain an unparalleled perspective that guides your product development in the most authentic and user-centric way.
