Key learning goals and objectives for each of our major programs
In accordance with AACSB Assurance of Learning standards, the Haskayne School of Business has identified key learning goals and objectives for each of our major programs. The goals specify the traits and competencies that students will demonstrate upon completion of the program. By focusing on key learning goals, we are working to ensure that students have the necessary preparation to be successful in their future careers.
1. Each student will communicate effectively
- Students will create well-written documents on a business topic
- Students will deliver an effective oral presentation on a business topic
2. Each student will be skilled in critical thinking and decision-making
- Students will weigh the significance of key assumptions used in business decision-making scenarios and develop and defend reasoned solutions
- Students will analyze business practices and evaluate integrated business solutions
- Students will solve business problems using appropriate quantitative and analytical techniques
3. Each student will incorporate ethical, social and environmental principles in making business decisions
- Students will evaluate business decisions on the basis of ethical, social and environmental considerations
- Students will evaluate business decisions based on ethical frameworks
4. Each student will have a breadth of understanding of key business functional area concepts and apply theories appropriately
- Students will understand the need to identify and assess strategies to create value
- Students will understand how to evaluate and communicate the financial status of an organization to internal and external decision makers
- Students will understand how to make effective financial decisions, namely how to manage and use funds to achieve organizational objectives

HSB’s doctoral program is aligned with the Assurance of Learning Standards, as reflected in the PhD Program Learning Goals. Having explicitly defined learning goals that are directly measured helps in the evaluation of how well the school accomplishes the educational aims at the core of its activities, assesses learning accomplishments, and assists faculty members with program and course improvement.
1. Each student will master academic knowledge in their chosen specialization Students will be able to demonstrate knowledge of their area of specialization in written and oral form 2. Each student will have an appropriate general background in business research methods and topics Students will be skilled in business research methods Students will demonstrate competence in research methods appropriate to their primary area of research 3. Each student will be able to produce original, rigorous and high quality research Students will be skilled in the design of original research in their area of specialization Students will demonstrate competence at preparing scholarly work for publication Students will demonstrate competence at presenting scholarly work in written form 4.
