Ahti Consulting already 3 years! Perhaps it is fair to say that it is already a vital toddler starting to stand on its' own feet. Today we are more than just me, working on really exciting projects around systemic shipping performance and emission improvement related projects and thanks to my colleagues we are able to handle extremely challenging cases. It all started with a message from my old friend Jerry Mathews who had a case in hands he thought I might be able to help with. I was full time employed but thought it might be a nice side project to handle cases like these, and thought it might be a good idea to start a real company for these and not just go with some "light-entrepeneurship-invoicing services". I was also super happy that I got a permission to work on some own projects on my own time from my that time employer Neste - something I am still very grateful knowing it is not necessarily a commonly accepted in a corporate. Saying above just to highlight how life is many times changing due to grasping small opportunities that you find on your way. I am happy how things turned out and that we have found really good customers for our business, another thing we very much appreciate. I had the honor of attending an event in Bergen yesterday, where we were joined by the Finnish presidential couple and Crown Prince Haakon of Norway. The event focused on strengthening business collaboration between Norway and Finland, particularly in areas driving the green transition in the maritime industry. ⚓🌍 It was a privilege to represent The Switch alongside other industry leaders like Wärtsilä i Norge and Corvus Energy. We discussed some innovations, from Bergen Havn and Plug | Shore Power & Maritime Charging initiatives—reducing cruise ship emissions by 60% and the goal of reaching 100% shore power by 2030—to Northern Lights JV's carbon storage solutions and Corvus Energy' growing leadership in battery technology, with their headquarters right here in Bergen. 🔋⚡ It was a day full of engaging conversations and inspiring insights. At the same time, we are happy to share that Maersk Supply Service's innovative wind offshore installation concept will remain owned by A.P. Moller Holding under the name Maersk Offshore Wind, focusing on the growing global offshore wind installation market. Martin Larsen, CFO at A.P. 👋 Meet the Global Maritime Forum team! 🤝   It’s no exaggeration to say that our organisation would not exist without our managing director, Michael Søsted. A co-founder along with our CEO Johannah Christensen, Michael helped establish the Global Maritime Forum in 2017.   It almost didn’t happen.   Michael recounts how the process of turning what began as the Danish Maritime Days into the Global Maritime Forum came down to the wire.     “Fundraising was not easy. At one point, we considered cutting our salaries in half to make it work or even pulling the plug on the whole thing, but we ultimately secured additional bridge funding to keep the dream alive and then met our fundraising goal,” he says. 💰   Michael and Johannah served as co-directors until 2021 when it was mutually agreed that Johannah would take on the CEO role and that Michael would be the managing director and head of operations. The two quickly became victims of their own success, as the team grew from just themselves and two others to one that now exceeds 40 employees from around 20 different countries. 🌎   “We had a very fast growth period and that certainly caused some growing pains and frustrations. And like any startup, expectations grew exponentially while resources only grew incrementally,” Michael says. 🚀   Several years later, there is better parity between resources and expectations thanks in large part to Michael himself, who oversees funding and “making the organisation tick.”   Michael is viewed around the office as something of a straight arrow, a reputation that seems unwarranted as he recounts stories about a move to London in his late teens that nearly ended in disaster, a trip through the Ecuadorian jungle in which he had to barter with an indigenous guide who was prepared to abandon him, and his numerous trips to see his two long-time passions: Bruce Springsteen and Manchester United (in fact, his voice was hoarse from screaming at a match the night before sitting down for this profile). ⚽️   Perhaps his reputation stems from a bit of organisational lore. In the runup to the final Danish Maritime Forum in 2016, Michael was working so hard that he neglected a cracked tooth that slowly got worse and worse until he had to leave the event for the hospital. 🦷 Then there’s the story about the time he planted a tree and followed the instructions so literally that he dug a hole much bigger than needed – only to have to spend time filling it back in. He’s a bit stumped when asked what these episodes reveal about his personality.   “If I’m going to do something, I want to follow through and do it right,” he says after a long pause.
