Over the last few weeks, I've been able to reflect upon #SafetyDay2024 and the importance of pausing and thinking about what needs to be in place to safely start work. "Before I start work..." was the theme for the day and refers to the need for all of us to take ownership of how we shape safety outcomes before a tool is ever picked up. Throughout the day and my visits that week, I had numerous opportunities to explore critical pre-work processes like Permit To Work (PTW) and how we can work together with our contractor partners to strengthen and streamline our processes. Writing down the work plan in a PTW is one thing, but how do we ensure the plan is well communicated with the work crew ? This is where the "Step 7 Conversation" comes in which is a structured way to discuss the work with each other before the work starts. As we saw during several discussions that week, sometimes a little structure and collaboration can go a long way in helping us remember the really important stuff (like pilots do as they assist each other in the cockpit during pre-flight checks). The above sounds really simple, but making it happen consistently is the real challenge. When done well, it can make all the difference in enabling safe outcomes and failing safely when things go wrong. How will you make a difference before work starts?

Some crewing managers assume that we are trying to replace their existing crew management system. However, this is not true. 😉 In fact, we are enhancing it by adding a layer of automation and optimization.
