African iGaming SEO is a whole new ballgame. Here's what I've learned: 1. Local languages matter more than you think English isn't enough. Swahili, Yoruba, Zulu - each opens new markets. 2. Mobile-first is non-negotiable 80% of African internet users are on mobile. Optimize or lose out. 3. Load speed is king. Many users have limited data plans. 4. Cultural nuances are your secret weapon Sports betting? Football is king, but don't ignore cricket & rugby in South Africa. 5. Regulation varies wildly What works in Ghana might be illegal in Tanzania. Do your homework. 6. In Uganda, "betting" outperforms "gambling" by 3:1 in search volume. 7. Embrace local slang. Once dominated by the financial industry, we continue to see further investment in local sports by companies within the betting industry. Sponsorships have always been an effective marketing tactic, but more so the money provided continues to support the growth of local sports and the development of local talent. Lets hope the investment continues all the way to grass routes enabling SA to produce even more world class sports stars. Well done Betway. The new advertising restrictions in Bulgaria are hitting the online gambling marketplace hard. Yield Sec tells iGamingBusiness that 91% of GGR in the first half of 2024 went to illegal operators, it's clear regulated operators face an uphill battle. And we’ve seen this before - look at Belgium. Ad bans rarely work; they make it near impossible for licensed operators to compete, while unregulated and illegal operators gain popularity and visibility, paying no regard to the restrictions. One of four Advertising Standards Authority rulings recently upheld against ‘social casino’ game ads. All were based on implication that the games were gambling products, in which real-world money or tangible prizes could be won and withdrawn. All examples were paid for Tik Tok ads and reading through the rulings, all companies were banged to rights in terms of breaching the ‘non-misleading’ requirements stipulated within the Committee of Advertising Practice code. The advertising angle is an interesting one and the fact that four breaches were found as part of ‘a wider piece of ASA work on paid-for gambling-like ads’, suggests this becoming a bit of a problem. However, for me this also highlights a wider issue, which at one point was apparently being addressed as part of the Gambling Act review – that of unlicensed free to play games and prize draws. I feel like this sector should absolutely be brought into regulation for the greater good of the industry, for a multitude of reasons.
