Colleagues at Gibraltar Finance (past and present) were delighted to have made a team contribution to the Gibraltar Broadcasting Corporation #OpenDay24. Funds are raised throughout the year via our dress down Friday initiative. An annual event, the #GBCOpenDay has this year raised over £300,000 for worthy causes in our community. Minister Feetham believes that sitting down with people and listening is the most effective way to understand the realities on the ground. By engaging with others, he gains valuable insights. At the same time, he ensures his own views are clearly conveyed.

I recently visited GibDock and was reminded of the 1984 general election when the future of the Naval Dockyard was a key campaign issue. I was then a young boy. This facility has been a significant asset for Gibraltar, playing an important role in supporting our economy and our armed forces. I’m very happy to have been invited to the facility and to see firsthand the continued importance it holds for Gibraltar.

I visited the GFIU today to thank the staff and senior team for their work and dedication as we approach the end of the year. I regularly meet with the Director of the GFIU, Edgar Lopez, and have greatly appreciated his professionalism and commitment since I took office over a year ago, especially given the challenges posed by work pressures. With the recent addition of five new recruits to the team, I felt it was important to visit personally to introduce myself and express my gratitude for their contributions to the vital work carried out by the GFIU. Lord Collins of Highbury, Deputy Leader of the House of Lords and Parliamentary Under Secretary of State and Minister for Africa. A courteous and engaging man, and a trade unionist by background. I’ve heard him speak a couple of times in the last months, and was very impressed by his ability to connect with people. A natural communicator.

This is what drives me: speaking to young participants, engaging in discussions, or sitting alongside them to explore ideas and opportunities. One of my key messages (in my Ministerial event today) to these youngsters was that the financial services sector (banking, insurance, DLT and others) should not be an abstract concept locked away in boardrooms - it should be alive in our community, inspiring young people to think ambitiously about their futures.
