🔦 This enlightening investigation into what remains for me a very exciting project, and one of the most ambitious I have seen in terms of circularity in a highly criticized and very complex sector: fashion and footwear. What we learn here is that creating a global circular loop, which remains 👟 environmentally friendly, 👟 socially just, 👟 logistically realistic, 👟 affordable in terms of price and value for the consumer, 😵 is extremely difficult to achieve ! And nobody cracked it yet except a couple of brands who were built circular by design like #Patagonia, but are they finally really fully circular without a proper take back scheme ? While I always aim to maintain a positive and respectful tone, I find the recent Business of Fashion interview and justification for Chanel’s price increase on their leathergoods to be somewhat amusing and almost comical. When we break down the actual costs—leather, hardware, and labor—for a flap bag, even with the highest quality materials, let's say even the best French or Italian box calf, it’s evident that the total cost would be less than $1,000. Upon closer examination of the product and considering its expected wear and tear, it becomes apparent that Chanel’s price hikes are primarily aimed at boosting their profit margins, paying their rent, marketing budgets, as well as Peter Marino buildouts, and brand ambassadors-Penelope Cruz and Brad Pitt, as I currently write this opinion. While this strategy aims to create an even more luxury environment and exclusive position, it may burden clients who have reached a threshold. The real goal is obvious; for Chanel to position itself next to Hermes, considered the ultimate in luxury leathergoods. For one thing all of Hermes' bags are hand-made and Chanel's are not, something that a $10K bag should be required to be, at least to give some justification for such an exuberant price. However, it’s crucial to remind consumers that they themselves hold the power, and time will tell if clients new and old will pay $10K for a flap bag. I personally find it very difficult to digest that price for such a bag, especially after each SA opens the mirrored closets behind them, illustrating a plethora of the same machine-made bags stacked up against each other, losing their allure and perceived "specialness," and "craftsmanship." At least Hermes' sales associates wear white gloves and open up the orange boxes, as if the bag is seeing daylight for its first time, adding to the luxury experience. It is also my belief that vintage Chanel can remain a viable option for many, often boasting superior aesthetics and quality, compared to contemporary bags. Yes, their mianudieres and couture pieces today are extraordinary, but a clutch for $18K-$25K? I think one will get tired of a branded slot machine, scarab, or racing helmet. Then again, after almost 15 years, I am still thinking of the novelty clutches resembling the China and Russian dolls, that my Mom and I never bought, and wish we had back in the day, now selling for $45K on the secondary market!

By Laure Guilbault, July 30, 2024 Fashion How fashion took centre stage at the Olympics ceremony By Laure Guilbault ... net profits dropped 50 per cent in the first half of 2024, while sales fell 11 per cent to €9 billion, as star brand continues to slip. Second-quarter sales dropped 19 per cent to €2 billion, after an 18 per cent decrease in the first quarter. In response, the luxury conglomerate on Wednesday issued guidance for the rest of the year, expecting a 30 per cent drop in recurring operating income. CFO attributed it to the “current uncertainty regarding consumer confidence and demand for luxury in particular”, she told analysts on the call. This comes after recurring operating income fell 42 per cent to €1.6 billion in the first half. “In a challenging market environment, which adds pressure on our top line and profitability, we are working assiduously to create the conditions for a return to growth,” said in a statement. By geography, group retail sales were down 11 per cent in North America in Q2, down 8 per cent in Western Europe, up 27 per cent in Japan, and down 25 per cent in Asia Pacific (mainly China), a deceleration compared to the 19 per cent decrease in the first quarter of this year. I do not have an answer but does traceability sells ? I do believe that consumers value sustainability but is it an after thought or can it actually affect what piece of jewellery a consumer picks ? At the end of the day, the only truly effective way to limit our footprint in the world is to consume less. The more bell and whistle you add to selling say a simple pendant, the more costs are incurred so there needs to be a better way to promote traceability and sustainability. Are we actually solving a problem we created ? Do we have traceability information for most of the goods we consume ? Do we need such information at the product level ? At what costs ?

Not long ago, the ORDRE Group’s CEO Mr. Simon P Lock spoke to students at ESSEC Business School about the Luxury Experience in the 21st Century. The talk was moderated by Savoir-faire Management and Branding Professor at ESSEC Simon Nyeck. Questions that were discussed included: 1. Richemont and LVMH appoint CEOs faster than I update my wardrobe. 😃 Yes, there have been recent CEO changes at Richemont. ▪︎ Louis Ferla, current CEO of Vacheron Constantin, will succeed Cyrille Vigneron as CEO of Cartier starting September 1, 2024. ▪︎ Catherine Rénier, current CEO of Jaeger-LeCoultre, will succeed Nicolas Bos as CEO of Van Cleef & Arpels on September 1, 2024. ▪︎ Nicolas Bos, former CEO of Van Cleef Arpels, became CEO of Richemont effective June 1, 2024. ▪︎ Cyrille Vigneron will retire and assume the position of Chairman of Cartier Culture & Philanthropy for Cartier. But that's not all though... CEO changed at GIVENCHY ! Alessandro Valenti, former president of the EMEA region at Louis Vuitton, has been appointed as Givenchy's new CEO, effective immediately. 🇪🇺 Ultra-fast fashion player Shein is expanding its pre-loved platform "Exchange" to Europe 👇 Starting this week, French consumers are able to buy and (re)sell second-hand SHEIN items on the platform - at even lower prices than usual (from 3 USD onwards). 🇩🇪 🇬🇧 Shein Exchange will later move into Germany and the UK. The Chinese e-commerce giant is hoping for as much success as in the United States where it's been active since October 2022, attracting +4 million users last year. ♻️ The company claims it has more than 115,000 second-hand items for sale from more than 95,000 resellers. Exchange is part of the main Shein app, which allows customers to automatically see previous purchases and start reselling any purchased item with the touch of 1 button. 🤔 The move of Shein, not particularly perceived as a sustainable fashion player, to launch a second life service for its products is quite surprising - but makes sense. Peer-to-peer marketplaces like Vinted are gaining traction when it comes to reselling secondhand apparel, and Shein clearly wants to own this part of the chain too. 🚀 And customers expect it as well. In recent studies, customers across the globe expressed a strong desire to integrate circular practices into their daily lives, with clothing donations and peer-to-peer sales being on top of the wishlists.
