INSIGHT: 8K at the Olympics OBS the technical arm of IOC has produced the Paris Olympics in 4K HDR /NGA and the 8K association has put together a very nice trial, https://buff.ly/4dhcInx describes all the technical elements. 8K production for China was done by CMG, see https://lnkd.in/gnq_Khb3 Spin Digital Labs was the technology used to compress 8K in VVC, see details: https://lnkd.in/gbaPJqDi Few observations for those not experts in 8K: - Besides NHK (Japan), no one uses 8K as a distribution format, some use 8K as a production format to distribute 4K - The 8K TV set market is roughly 1% of the 4K one, so still a niche - Japan (NHK) who was the only country to invest heavily in 8K over the last 15 years recognized that after Tokyo 2020, 8K was a failure as no consumer take up. Let us now look at the technical side of it. The Paris Olympics trial was running a dual socket top end intel server of 128 cores to encode 8Kp60 10bits using VVC. The encoded bitrate was 30M/s average with a cap at 60 M/s, but how does this compare to the state of the art? Today NHK delivers 8K using HEVC at 100 M/s using a HW based NEC encoder via DTH. In 2019, the Ultra HD Forum was showing on its booth a one pass (non real time) SW 8K HEVC using CAE at average bitrate of 40M/s (I was driving that demo at that time at Harmonic). Based on consensus in encoder community that VVC live cannot save more than 15% vs HEVC today, this equates to 30M/s, same number as shown by the 8K Paris Olympics trial. So the real challenge for 8K is not the technology but more the use case and device adoption. Will 8K take off one day? I have some doubts as I see 4K still not widely deployed in countries where we have a 4K TV set penetration reaching 70%. Meanwhile, I am a believer of a 8K production, followed by a 4K distribution and an AI assist or LCEVC enhanced 8K display. So, as it appears, the Vision Pro is a (commercial) failure... I must admit, I was wrong, I was super enthusiastic about it for a few reasons: First, the device was genuinely innovative offering both AR and VR experiences. I had a chance to test it and was absolutely amazed by the potential. Second, I really felt that Apple had the power to push many partners to develop tailor made experiences for the Vision Pro. This is probably where I dropped the ball, as the sports media complex is going through such struggles at this time than anything other than absolute necessity is going to be pushed to the side. Many partners wanted to be available on the device, at the bare minimum investment. I still believe that immersive tech will ultimately help save live sports broadcasting, maybe it's too early, maybe it still costs too much, maybe the Vision Pro 1.0 wasn't the right device after all but the future remains immersive. The NBA is really killing it with its D2C platform in France. But they also have long time partners in the country with beIN SPORTS France and an upcoming one on many international markets, including France, with Prime Video & Amazon MGM Studios. It shows that a rights owner shouldn't have to choose between going D2C or staying with traditionnal media partners. in most cases, if not all, it should be both. Exclusivity doesn't command the same premium as before in most markets outside of the US. Positive ROI through media rights are harder to find for both partners and broadcasters alike. Live sports is competing with many forms of entertainment and when it comes to younger demographics it has largely been loosing this battle. It's not about D2C vs B2B, Free vs Pay, Linear vs Streaming. It's everything together all at once. I think it should really be the basic approach to tackling the current disruption.

Sky goes full in on #streaming "Sky in the UK is to launch a new sports streaming offering, Sky Sports+, that will be integrated into Sky TV, streaming service Now and a revamped Sky Sports mobile app. Launching this August, Sky Sports+ will offer a much broader range of sporting content via concurrent live streams, the mobile app and a dedicated new channel, at no extra cost to subscribers, according to Sky." This will start like most other SVOD platforms, in alliance with the #paytv side, the big difference here is that the pay-tv partner is Sky's main business. It clearly doesn't want to cannibalise its business, and so its offering it for free to its subscribers. "Customers with a full Sky Sports subscription will have immediate access to Sky Sports+ across Sky Glass, Sky Stream, Sky Q, and Now. As part of the Sky Sports+ launch, Now members will also be able to pause and rewind live sports content for the first time." How will it outreach to non-subscribers? And, will this influence a slow migration away from Sky's #traditionaltv platform? The platform offers more than what Sky's pay-tv platform currently offers, allowing "Sky Sports+ will have the capability to show up to 100 live events via concurrent streams, while a dedicated Sky Sports+ linear channel will showcase a selection of the best live sport, according to the pay TV broadcaster." It will also offer more football matches "the launch of Sky Sports+ coincides with the start of a new long-term partnership with the English Football League (EFL), with over 1,000 EFL games a season featuring every team more than 20 times, and every Championship club on at least 24 occasions." I wonder if this includes the blackout games, those games in the UK blacked out to promote going to stadiums to watch games. If so, that could be a real game-changer. Now, it seems Sky is shifting away from Pay TV. It won't be immediate, it's not pushing its clients at all in any direction, its trying to facilitate convenience for existing legacy clients, as well as innovation for them and new clients. Sports Boost OTA, but Patent Disputes Threaten ATSC 3.0 Adoption - As RSNs struggle, sports teams are increasingly turning to local broadcast networks, as fans of a sports team tend to be concentrated in that team’s home city and surrounding area. This gives both cable subscribers and cord-cutters a way to access their local games, and should bring new viewers to broadcast television. Antenna TV was long thought of as an inferior alternative to cable, but as cord-cutting has accelerated, it’s regained popularity as a source of free and high-quality TV, as well as essential local news, weather, and sports that are largely absent from streaming services. ATSC 3.0 technology was also poised to give broadcast TV another leg up, making it an even stronger contender and a bigger part of future TV setups. But a patent dispute is now putting ATSC 3.0 adoption in doubt. LG recently lost a lawsuit, and as a result will no longer support the new ATSC 3.0 standard in its TVs. Other hardware makers may walk away from it as well if there is legal liability or new fees associated with it. FreeCast remains bullish and supportive of both ATSC broadcast delivery and licensors of tech. These are high class problems that in this particular case should be dealt with big tech boards in the towers or property level wifi network appliances, not consumer devices. Let's goooo: AI tools such as Claude Sonnet 3.5 and ChatGPT4o (both premium versions) are definitely reshaping how we might prepare for broadcasts. At least in my experience anyway. I've found AI to be a powerful ally - when used wisely. Here's my take on leveraging AI in sports commentary: Advantages: Information organisation: Feed AI player stats, match previews and tournament history and it'll structure it into digestible formats. Custom knowledge bases: Create specific GPTs with comprehensive tournament and player data for quick reference. Draft generation: AI can help craft initial outlines for previews and reviews, saving time on the first draft. Real-time data interpretation: During live events, paste in stats or play-by-play notes from any source and AI can quickly summarise key points. It can also translate really well! Idea generation: Use AI to brainstorm unique angles or talking points you might have overlooked. Pitfalls to Watch: Accuracy issues: AI will make mistakes or present outdated info. Always fact-check! AI is super annoying so do not rely on it at all! Lack of context: AI might miss nuances or recent developments that a seasoned commentator would catch. Over-reliance: Don't let AI replace your unique insights and storytelling abilities. Best Practices: Use AI as a starting point, not the final product. Cross-reference AI-generated info with official sources. Inject your personal experiences and insights to add depth. Stay updated on AI capabilities and limitations in your field.
