[Ingenuity Team Says Goodbye To Pioneering Mars Helicopter] The final downlink shift by the Ingenuity team was a time to reflect on a highly successful mission — and to prepare the first aircraft on another world for its new role. Engineers working on NASA’s Ingenuity Mars Helicopter assembled for one last time in a control room at the agency’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Southern California on Tuesday, April 16, to monitor a transmission from the history-making helicopter. While the mission ended Jan. 25, the rotorcraft has remained in communication with the agency’s Perseverance Mars rover, which serves as a base station for Ingenuity. This transmission, received through the antennas of NASA’s Deep Space Network, marked the final time the mission team would be working together on Ingenuity operations. Now the helicopter is ready for its final act: to serve as a stationary testbed, collecting data that could benefit future explorers of the Red Planet. “With apologies to Dylan Thomas, Ingenuity will not be going gently into that good Martian night,” said Josh Anderson, Ingenuity team lead at JPL. “It is almost unbelievable that after over 1,000 Martian days on the surface, 72 flights, and one rough landing, she still has something to give. And thanks to the dedication of this amazing team, not only did Ingenuity overachieve beyond our wildest dreams, but also it may teach us new lessons in the years to come.” Originally designed as a short-lived technology demonstration mission that would perform up to five experimental test flights over 30 days, the first aircraft on another world operated from the Martian surface for almost three years, flew more than 14 times farther than the distance expected, and logged more than two hours of total flight time. Ingenuity’s mission ended after the helicopter experienced a hard landing on its last flight, significantly damaging its rotor blades. Unable to fly, the rotorcraft will remain at “Valinor Hills” while the Perseverance rover drives out of communications range as it continues to explore the western limb of Jezero Crater. Advanced Aircrew Academy
NEW MODULE ALERT! U.S. domestic enroute CPDLC is now available to all appropriately equipped aircraft as of November 2023 [Ref: Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) Advisory Circular AC 90-117]. Training is not mandatory, but operational information is necessary on how to effectively use CPDLC in CONUS airspace. There is new guidance associated with updated and/or new operational authorization. Advanced Aircrew Academy's CPDLC - U.S. Domestic Only module is for aircraft that are FANS 1/A approved, equipped with VDL Mode 2 with Multi-Frequency and "Push to Load" (PTL) capability. Aircraft must also meet avionics requirements per the FAA En-Route CPDLC Participation List, file the corresponding equipment codes, and only log on to the system if they intend to participate. Voice remains the primary means of communication. Authorization for domestic data link communication (CPDLC) use is no longer required for operation under any 14 CFR part; however, A056 authorization is still required for international and oceanic data link operations while U.S. Domestic CONUS data link operations will no longer be reviewed on A056 applications. All operators are responsible for knowing individual avionics capabilities and FAA domestic airspace datalink communications requirements. Operators may conduct U.S. Domestic data link communications where aircraft are properly equipped, the data link service is available, and airspace requirements are met. The CPDLC U.S. Domestic Only module is NOT for operators seeking A056 LOA or Ops Spec authorization for Data Link Communications (outside the US). This is a training module for operators wanting to use CPDLC only in the lower 48 United States. That's all complicated, but it's simple to get the training. email [email protected] #aviation #businessaviation #pilot #pilottraining #international #bizav #bizjet #learn #elearning #fly #flight #safety #datalink #cockpit #airplane #flightdeck #aircraft #safety #safetyculture #linkedin #learning #rules

Marine Traffic and AIS Survey from Summer 2023 is #DatasetOfTheWeek 🛳️🚤🚢🛥️ This report presents analysis of the summer 2023 vessel-based traffic survey which has been undertaken from the survey vessel Karima between the 14th and 28th June 2023. The primary objective of the survey was to identify and validate the routing of vessels and the level of vessel activity within a 5 nautical mile (nm) buffer around the Search Area. This was achieved by recording, in real time, the positions of vessels within range of the Automatic Identification System (AIS) receiver and Automatic Radar Plotting Aid (ARPA). This survey supplements a previous survey undertaken in January 2023 to ensure full compliance with Marine Guidance Note (MGN) 654 (Maritime and Coastguard Agency (MCA), 2021), which requires a minimum of 28 days seasonally-weighted data comprising AIS, Radio Detection and Ranging (Radar) and visual observations. Data are held in the Marine Data Exchange with The Crown Estate👇 https://hubs.la/Q02J2mT10

The new #fleet-wide guidance from the US Navy’s top officer focuses on preparing the service for a potential #war with China by 2027 as the #maritime component of a joint “#warfighting ecosystem.” Office of the Chief of Naval Operations Adm. Lisa Franchetti will publicly issue her “America’s Warfighting #Navy,” guidance to the wider fleet this week, more than a year into leading the Navy. The plan outlines her priorities for the service, which include fixing maintenance backlogs and recruiting, according to the final draft reviewed by #USNI News. Dubbed “Project 33,” Franchetti’s service-wide guidance wrestles with preparing for war with China with a short time horizon and problems caused by legacy readiness and recruiting deficits and the #ships and #aircraft currently in inventory. “We cannot manifest a bigger traditional Navy in a few short years, nor will we rely on mass without the right #capabilities to win the sea control contest,” reads the plan. “Without those #resources, however, we will continue to prioritize readiness, #capability, and #capacity —in that order. We must recognize that the Navy faces real #financial and #industrial constraints, including the once-in-a-generation cost of recapitalizing our [sea-based] #strategic #nuclear #deterrent.” Franchetti identified seven areas to improve – chief of which is fielding mission-capable ships, #submarines and aircraft. The goal is to surge up to 80 percent of the surface fleet as part of a so-called “#combat-ready surge force” that would be available on short notice for combat #operations. #mai #marineacoustics #usnavy #underseawarfare #innovation U.S. Naval Institute #shipbuilding #collaboration https://lnkd.in/gK2_6-AZ

✈️ 𝗗𝗶𝗱 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝗸𝗻𝗼𝘄? 𝗕𝗲𝗳𝗼𝗿𝗲 𝗜𝗖𝗔𝗢, 𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗿𝗲 𝘄𝗮𝘀 𝗣𝗜𝗖𝗔𝗢! The forerunner to ICAO was the International Commission for Air Navigation (ICAN) The Convention on International Civil Aviation, also known as the 𝗖𝗵𝗶𝗰𝗮𝗴𝗼 𝗖𝗼𝗻𝘃𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻, in Chicago, was signed by 52 countries on 7 December 1944. Under its terms, a 𝗣𝗿𝗼𝘃𝗶𝘀𝗶𝗼𝗻𝗮𝗹 𝗜𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗻𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝗮𝗹 𝗖𝗶𝘃𝗶𝗹 𝗔𝘃𝗶𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗢𝗿𝗴𝗮𝗻𝗶𝘇𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 (𝗣𝗜𝗖𝗔𝗢) was to be established, to be replaced in turn by a permanent organization when twenty-six countries ratified the convention. 𝗣𝗜𝗖𝗔𝗢 began operating on 𝟲 𝗝𝘂𝗻𝗲 𝟭𝟵𝟰𝟱, replacing 𝗜𝗖𝗔𝗡. The 26th country ratified the convention on 5 March 1947 and, consequently, PICAO was disestablished on 4 April 1947 and replaced by 𝗜𝗖𝗔𝗢, which began operations the same day. In October 1947, 𝗜𝗖𝗔𝗢 became an agency of the 𝗨𝗻𝗶𝘁𝗲𝗱 𝗡𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀 𝘂𝗻𝗱𝗲𝗿 𝗶𝘁𝘀 𝗘𝗰𝗼𝗻𝗼𝗺𝗶𝗰 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗦𝗼𝗰𝗶𝗮𝗹 𝗖𝗼𝘂𝗻𝗰𝗶𝗹 (𝗘𝗖𝗢𝗦𝗢𝗖).

VESSEL REVIEW: Chinese shipbuilder COSCO Shipping Heavy Industry has handed over a new deep-sea aquaculture platform fitted with intelligent systems to the Zhuhai Marine Development Group (ZMDG). 'Gesheng No 1' (格盛1号) was designed by Zhuhai Gesheng Technology and the Guangzhou Institute of Energy Conversion and the Chinese Academy of Sciences to be capable of withstanding strong winds and currents, allowing fish farming to be carried out safely regardless of weather and sea conditions. The semi-submersible, truss-type platform has a length of 86 metres (280 feet), a beam of 32 metres (100 feet), a height of 16.5 metres (54.1 feet), a draught of 10.5 metres (34.4 feet), and a capacity of 30,000 cubic metres (1.1 million cubic feet). Other key features include generators, feed storage and refrigeration equipment, feeding systems, underwater surveillance cameras, and environmental monitoring systems. A 5G wireless communication link allows for remote real-time monitoring of the platform and its operations, most of which will benefit from a high degree of automation for greater efficiency. Power for the structure is partly drawn from onboard PV panels. Feeding of the harvested fish will also be done with the aid of drones, which will be deployed via a dedicated onboard take-off and landing platform. Full article link in comments.
