Negative power prices have been a huge topic in European power markets this year, as the number of negative price hours has surged in many markets. Our French power markets team has pulled together a public report on this available on link below. Key drivers of negative prices are: - Strong growth in renewables deployment - High renewables generation in some months (this was a strong driver in I Paris in Spring) - Inflexibilities in the system eg nuclear in France, coal in Poland and Germany - Low power demand, partly linked to weak industrial demand - France in particular ‘imports’ negative prices from neighbouring markets in periods of oversupply.

Presentation this week of the ENGIE 2024 scenarios for decarbonising Europe! By 2050, Europe must accelerate its transition to carbon neutrality. But the challenge is huge: 70% of the technologies needed to achieve Net Zero Carbon 2050 have yet to be developed. On Tuesday, Catherine MacGregor, Claire Waysand, Nicolas Lefevre-Marton and Pierre-Laurent Lucille presented the 2ᵉ edition of ENGIE's decarbonisation scenarios. One of the challenges of the energy transition is its cost. In our presentation, we pointed out that: ➡️ This shift towards decarbonisation will profoundly transform the economic model, with necessary investments in green energy, building renovation, decarbonised mobility solutions and the evolution of industrial processes. ➡️ These investments will gradually be offset by savings on fossil fuel imports, thereby strengthening our energy independence. ➡️ ENGIE estimates the net financing needed to achieve these objectives at 1.8% of European GDP by 2030, an amount that will gradually decrease. By 2050, it should represent less than 1% of GDP. ➡️ For this transition to become an engine for growth, Europe needs to simplify its mechanisms and attract strategic investment. According to DNV's latest Energy Transition Outlook report, 2024 is the year that global emissions are likely to peak. However, the expected reduction in energy-related CO2 emissions in 2025 is marginal and uncertain, and unforeseen political or economic priorities may delay the peak by a year or two. This week, Energy Ministers from the 27 EU Member States came together in Brussels for an informal meeting hosted by the Belgian Presidency of the Council of the European Union. The European Commission was represented by its Executive Vice President Maroš Šefčovič, who is in charge of coordinating the implementation of the #EUGreenDeal. The Energy Ministers discussed challenges relating to Europe's energy infrastructure, including: the need for a better coordinated and integrated European electricity grid; the financial and risk-reduction aspects of cross-border investments in electricity infrastructure; and how to ensure grid resilience during the transition to an energy system with a greater reliance on #renewables and #netzero greenhouse gas emissions. "We are very pleased to see that Energy Ministers are focusing their attention on the need to develop and improve Europe's energy infrastructure," says COGEN Europe's Managing Director Hans Korteweg. "In order to meet its energy and climate ambitions, the EU must take an integrated approach to energy systems, fostering energy efficiency and renewable energy across electricity, heat and gas grids." "Smart #cogeneration solutions are embedded in Europe’s cities and industries, efficiently linking energy grids at local level. Delivering the cost-effective potential for cogeneration must be prioritised in order to foster energy efficiency and resilience, whilst enabling a greater integration of renewables and supporting electrification."

📣Last 26th June both the 🇪🇺Directive 2024/1711 and the Regulation 2024/1747 as regards improving the Union’s electricity market design #EMD were published in the official Journal of the EU 📑. 👇Just in case you are asked about the key elements of the #Directive or you need a 2-minute summary, I would like to share with you the following: ✅In legislative terms: 🇪🇺It amends the Directives (EU) 2018/2001 and (EU) 2019/944 🏁It will enter into force next 16 July. 🗓️Member States must transpose it by 17 January 2025. By way of derogation, new art. 4 and 15a by 17 July 2026. ✅I leave you below 🖐️five points I consider #NEW ones: 1️⃣ #EnergySharing is now part of the EU energy legislation and this Directive makes clear that active consumers (of any kind) have the right to energy sharing in a non-discriminatory manner. 2️⃣ #ProtectionFromDisconnections becomes a firm right for vulnerable customers and customers affected by energy poverty. Under this Directive, regulated prices are possible as well for vulnerable customers and customers affected by energy poverty. 3️⃣ #ElectricityPricesCrises is well defined in the Directive through concrete price conditions. If these conditions are met, under the proposal by the EC, the Council can declare a regional or Union-wide electricity price crisis and trigger certain public interventions in price setting for electricity supply. 4️⃣ #SupplierRiskManagement must be regularly assessed by national competent authorities. Stress tests and reporting requirements on suppliers could be tools by which to assess supplier hedging strategies. 5️⃣ #FlexibleConnectionAgreements should have a proper regulatory framework in which transmission system operators and distribution system operators offer this connection possibility in areas where there is limited or no network capacity availability for new connections. #MoreEurope #MoreMarkets

A well proven circular technology, widely available in Europe (+400TWh potential), which can be blended directly within European Natural Gas networks, helping to avoid methane leakage 5x more dangerous to the environment than CO2. Interesting fact, 391TWh of biogas production are equivalent to the 2030 target of having 55 bcm of natural gas replacement, knowing that Germany consumed 73,9 bcm in 2022, in a decreasing trend due to price volatility and advent of other renewable energies.

⁉️Is flexibility still considered a last resort? 🗞️The Electricity Market Design (EMD) requires countries to produce assessments of their future flexibility needs. 🪑This was the topic for a lively discussion at the EASE - The European Association for Storage of Energy #ESGS2024 conference between Ioannis Thomas Theologitis, Antoine Bizet, Ksenia Tolstrup and Martin Roach. The ENTSO-E slides defined flexibility as "the ability of an electricity system to adjust to the variability of generation and consumption patterns and to grid availability, across relevant market timeframes". So far, so good, therefore the flexibility needs assessment will quantify this variability, right? Maybe not, as the slide goes on to describe a flexibility need as occurring only "when the power system is not able to cover this variability and availability". Will the Flexibility Needs Assessment only quantity the requirements of last resort? Will this affect the design of non-fossil flexibility support schemes? Is this sufficient to incentivise investment in flexibility? Demand side flexibility and all storage technologies should be empowered not only to support the power system when it is not able to cover variability of generation and consumption, but also to complete with fossil flexibility when it is. 🚗 Decarbonizing Transport: Hydrogen's Role in France’s Strategy! The French government is doubling down on ambitious targets to decarbonize transport, with the National Low Carbon Strategy (SNBC) and the Multi-Annual Energy Program (PPE) under review and open for public consultation until December 16. Highlights from the strategy: 🔋 Electric Vehicles: France aims to have 66% of new vehicle sales be electric by 2030 (up from 17% today) and increase EVs to 15% of the total vehicle fleet by then, setting a strong foundation ahead of the 2035 internal combustion engine ban. 🌱 Biofuels: Biofuel use is projected to grow by 40%, targeting 50-55 TWh across land, air, and maritime transport by 2030. ⚡ Hydrogen: Electrolysis capacity will reach 6.5 GW by 2030, with 8 GW by 2035, facilitating the shift toward clean hydrogen for industry and transport. With transport accounting for 32% of France's CO₂ emissions, the government’s goal is ambitious: reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 31% and cut energy consumption by 20% in transport by 2030.
