Is this ENERGIZED WORK? Here is the story... -- You are a generator technician . You've been called to a customer's site because they can't get their Automatic Transfer Switch (ATS) to operate. After some careful investigation and troubleshooting you discover the control panel needs to be replaced. In order to replace it you will need to open the door to the ATS and expose yourself to 600 volts. The control panel is on the door that you opened. You ask the client if you can kill power to the ATS while you work but they say NO! Now what do you do? Can you still complete the task safely? Is this considered energized work? Ahhh the simple displacement of O2 in the unseen and never before seen environment! The One of the most unappreciated metrics in hazardous environments. We like to delineate the prevent from the response side of the house, but this shows us that a simple O2 measurement can actually define this for us! We do not get to decide the environment we are in! That unfortunately is dictated by the adversary or variable we know nothing about prior to interdicting with the hazard. The mear displacement of O2, as in the picture below if found while conducting prevent operations would give us some real indicators based on science and completely change the operation moving forward. Yet, this is only taught from a very miopic viewpoint! Why? Well because of current platforms in financing and budgets. The adversary does not play by our game! The above monitor reading potentially creates a bad day for all, which is why we must account and prepare for all toxic environments, even the ones we have no clue about and when we least expect it! The very reading above gives us the “response” protocol to the displacement of the air we breath telling us something is not normal where we are! I discuss this all the time at CTOS, and it is a major issue in the unknown hazard environment. Yet historically in the present mission it is never spoken of, much less deployed. Constant assessment of the operating environment is called situational awareness in the unseen and never before seen environment! Fire protection education is a crucial aspect of ensuring fire safety worldwide. The Institution of Fire Engineers (IFE) UK and the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) USA are renowned institutions that set the standard for fire protection education globally. In Pakistan, the environment is challenging, with inadequate infrastructure, lack of awareness, and limited resources. The fire regulations in Pakistan are BCP FSP 2016, adapted from NFPA. However, the fire protection industry of Pakistan has been actively promoting fire safety education, training, and research in the country. The industry, as an organization and education institute, has been working tirelessly to promote fire safety. Last year, the industry penned a letter to President Dr. Arif Alvi, highlighting the need for improved fire safety measures and a scheme to enhance the industrial sector's ability to purchase firefighting equipment. Despite NFPA's 130 years of service, Pakistan still lags behind in adopting basic fire safety measures like water sprinkler systems in buildings. However, the Building Code of Pakistan Fire Safety Provision 2016 is adopted from NFPA standards, ensuring that Pakistan's fire safety regulations are on par with global benchmarks. I have been working in the fire protection industry for several years, promoting fire safety education and developing passive fire prevention technologies. My work has included projects in high-rise buildings, hotels, hospitals, and industry, as well as developing HSE and fire safety prevention policies with Oil Marketing Association Pakistan and Oil and Gas Regulations Authority. The fire protection industry of Pakistan has been praised for its efforts to educate and promote fire safety internationally. In conclusion, fire protection education is essential for ensuring fire safety worldwide. While institutions like IFE and NFPA set the standard, Pakistan's fire protection industry is working tirelessly to align with international benchmarks. The adoption of NFPA standards in Pakistan's building code is a significant step forward. The dedication of professionals in the fire protection industry of Pakistan is commendable, and their efforts will continue to shape the future of fire safety in the country. This is why Specialist 3rd party checks by Passive Fire specialists are needed along side specialist designs. The image shows what should have been a simple set appeture firestop with a set sealant depth and configuration along with this there was a set design in place to complete the work including all the needed details for a successful installation. The sealant need to be in a 40 mm appeture with 13 mm sealant depth and a 25 mm cone or fillet applied. This was a professional firestopping company that failed all of the inspected criteria. and took 3 goes to get it right. #Passivefiredesign #Passivefireinspections

JUST A QUICK FIRE PUMP PHASE REVERSAL BLOG, WITH A NOTE ON TRANSFER SWITCHES! If you are testing a 3 phase electric fire pump, the phase reversal test is to ensure that if one of the (3) wires going into the controller or peckerhead (junction box) on the FP motor gets switched to a different terminal orientation, which makes the fire pump run backwards, that it will alarm at the fire pump controller and/or the fire alarm panel! Preferably both, as the vanes or fins on the impeller if you will, cannot pick up the water and build pressure if it is running in reverse or backwards rotation!!! Very important!!! You can simulate & test phase reversal a number of ways, but the easiest way is to go into the programming on the FP controller and change the wire pattern program from “ABC” to “CBA” or vice versa if you understand. It should go into alarm 🚨!!! 💦🔥. Another important test that usually isn’t allowed to be performed is the transfer switch test, which involves killing the power to the electric fire pump at 150% flow rate & allowing the back-up diesel generator to fire up and provide power to the electric fire pump and still maintain proper pump performance!!!! Done a ton of testing, diagnostics & rebuilds on fire pumps! Hope this helps some of you all!!! 💦🔥

Common Fire Service TIC Misuse: 1. Using Fire Service TICs For Exact Temperature Measurement: This is a common misuse of thermal imaging cameras. Many fire departments are unaware that fire service TICs are intended for qualitative thermography usage and not quantitative usage. In other words, these devices were never intended to provide exact measurements. In fact, many of these devices are “off” in temperature measurement directly from the manufacturer by as low as +/- 5 Degrees Fahrenheit to as much as +/- 26 Degrees Fahrenheit. In addition, these devices were calibrated in a laboratory with all variables controlled, at a preset distance, at a low ambient background temperature, with a preset emissivity, focused on a perfect black body heat source. In other words, depending on the environment these devices can be several hundred degrees off in their measurement. (As shown in the attached chart) For this reason and it being cited as a contributing factor in several Line of Duty Deaths, the spot temperature feature was removed from the TI Basic application on all newer NFPA 1801-2021 certified TICs.
