Let me be frank: the situation for women in Afghanistan is beyond alarming, and we cannot afford to be silent 🤐. At the WOMEN IN TECH ® Global Awards, we heard from Marzieh Hamidi, an Afghan refugee athlete whose courage is as formidable as her talent. Her message was clear - we must act. Our support for Afghan women began in 2021 when I met Zarifa Ghafari, the youngest and one of the very few Female Mayors of Afghanistan, who had just arrived in Germany after fleeing Kabul under Taliban attack. We recognized the urgent need to amplify her voice and share her story with the world. This led to her first press conference in Paris, with the support of the Mayor of Paris, Anne Hidalgo and Prof Carlos Moreno. From there, we traveled to Portugal and Brazil, where we shared her powerful narrative on national media platforms and at local Women in Tech events. I've learned in my career that when women's voices are stifled, it's up to those who can speak to do so - loudly and often. We must interrupt the global conversation to ensure Afghan women are not forgotten. Here's the truth: Afghan women are being systematically oppressed. Their rights to speech, education, work, and basic freedoms are being stripped away. The world's attention is waning, but the crisis persists. At WOMEN IN TECH ® Global, we're not just talking - we're acting. Our Women in Tech® Afghanistan chapter, led by the indomitable Dr. Zahra Nazari, PhD, is working tirelessly to support women through online programs. But here's what I know: It's not enough. We need every one of you to speak up, to advocate, and to keep Afghan women on the global agenda. Don't wait to be called on - interrupt, speak out, and make your voice heard for those who can't. Together, let’s ensure that the voices of Afghan women resonate across borders and that their fight for freedom and equality remains at the forefront of our global consciousness.
