- Communiquez clairement vos besoins.

Balancing research and teaching can be challenging, but timetabling and scheduling help in setting realistic targets, ensuring tasks are manageable, and collaboration with colleagues who share similar interests offers a solution. Co-authoring articles leverages diverse expertise, shares workloads, and fosters intellectual connections. Such teamwork enhances efficiency, enriches research quality, and aligns with shared teaching experiences, providing students with valuable real-world insights.

Research and teaching are overlapping areas, can't be separated as well as balancing is challenging. Colleagues are good resources for collaborative research if having good understanding. A healthy competition is always good for the career. But unfortunately most of the people are not ready to support their colleagues due to different valid/invalid reasons. Still it's better to approach colleagues for co-authoring or mentoring or distributing of teaching loads so that research and teaching both can exist without harming each other.

When I was on the tenure track I connected with senior colleagues to learn ways that I could protect my time to research and write. I not only learned helpful tips about setting reasonable deadlines and planning out my research agenda beyond one semester, but when my name came up for additional service responsibilities those same senior colleagues advocated for protecting my time. Personally, I committed to writing Monday through Friday even if I could only write for 15 minutes a day. As a full professor I still commit to the daily habit and found that it accumulates into more research productivity.

I think the lectures can be arranged in such a way that Friday and saturday, you either don't have a lecture or maybe one lecture at the start of the day. You can then devote your time to research. Also keep your syllabus in check so that you don't need to rush it towards the end of the semester. Make good use of your time and try to support your colleagues in their endeavors.

Following will definitely help: 1. Build a rapport amongst colleagues. 2. Start helping them in their workload. 3. Start taking suggestions of their area of expertise. 4. Never compare and never involve in gossiping. 5. Start praising the good work of colleagues. 6. Don't be hesitate on knowledge sharing. You will see that you will get support from your colleagues automatically. Ignore 10 to 20 percent exceptional cases as we have to accept that all fingers are not of same size though support from all are required.

Research and Teaching shall always go hand in hand (together) and challenges are symptoms of heading the way, one should always speak out the challenges in the peer groups. Discussing them with mentors and colleague shall help in exploring the ways to deal with them

The brightest and best colleagues I have worked with have ensured that, to some extent at least, they taught what they researched and used the experience of working with students to refine ideas and extend their thesis. Academic years have a natural “ebb and flow” to them and I find it’s other aspects of life (currently my wonderful and time-consuming granddaughter) that get in the way of writing. I have developed the habit of doing a great deal of thinking while walking around during the day and ensuring I jot headlines down when I get the chance (Apple notes is great for this as it extends across devices and can be cut and pasted into other formats). It’s a wonder that so much is now available on line so access to texts is easier.

Balancing research and teaching is a common challenge faced by academics. Establish separate goals for research and teaching, and prioritize them based on urgency and importance. Collaborate with colleagues on research projects or share teaching responsibilities. Collaborate with colleagues from similar disciplines to share knowledge and resources. Some specific ways to seek support from colleagues include: - Asking a colleague to review your research proposal or paper - Requesting feedback on your teaching methods or materials - Collaborating on a research project or grant proposal - Participating in a peer-mentoring program or research group
-
Some things to explore: - collaborate on teaching and research - share the demands, get inspiration, help each other out - take a long view - don't just think in terms of weeks or semesters but years - over the years the demands of teaching and research will fluctuate - there are a lot of front loaded time demands in teaching but this might reduce with familiarity - explore whether it is possible to plan for 'heavy' and 'light' teaching periods where research might be scaled down then scaled up

Teaching and research are interconnected, each enhancing the other. Integrating research into teaching makes learning more engaging, while teaching helps identify gaps for research to address. Balancing these roles requires considerable time and effort, but it is achievable with the right strategies and a strong support system. Collaborating with colleagues fosters teamwork and innovation, allowing educators to share responsibilities and gain diverse perspectives. A supportive academic network is beneficial, and effective time management, such as prioritizing tasks and setting realistic goals, can help ease challenges. With collaboration and strategic planning, educators can successfully balance research and teaching responsibilities.
