Founded in 1971, it comprises 18 members: Australia, Cook Islands, Federated States of Micronesia, Fiji, French Polynesia, Kiribati, Nauru, New Caledonia, New Zealand, Niue, Palau, Papua New Guinea, Republic of Marshall Islands, Samoa, Solomon Islands, Tonga, Tuvalu, and Vanuatu. The Forum’s Pacific Vision is for a region of peace, harmony, security, social inclusion and prosperity, so that all Pacific people can lead free, healthy, and productive lives. The Pacific Islands Forum works to achieve this by fostering cooperation between governments, collaboration with international agencies, and by representing the interests of its members. .

#resourcesandeconomicdevelopment The fourth Pacific Islands Metrology Committee (PIMC) meeting wrapped up on the 10 December 2024 with some exciting progress for the region. Key highlights include: ✅ Continued momentum on the #PacificRegionalQualityPolicy, with a workshop planned for January 2025; ✅ Revamped Priorities 2025-2027, including training programs, trade measurement equipment delivery, and boosting regional labs; ✅ A big step forward on Legal Metrology: members agreed to develop a regional model law to ensure consistency and adaptability across countries. Statement from the Pacific Islands Forum Secretary General, Baron Waqa on the Vanuatu Earthquakes. 18 December 2024 The Pacific Islands Forum family extends its thoughts, prayers and condolences to the government and people of Vanuatu, following the recent earthquakes that have struck Port Vila. We are with Vanuatu and her people through this tragedy, and we mourn with the families that have lost their loved ones. The Forum stands ready to assist and offer support to Vanuatu during this very difficult time. Our deepest gratitude to all the national agencies working very hard to serve the people in ensuring safety and security. #PacificResilienceFacility Legal officials from around the Pacific are in Nadi to work on finalising the Pacific Resilience Facility’s (PRF) establishment agreement. The PRF is on track to finalise the draft legal establishment agreement by the Special Forum Economic Ministers Meeting (FEMM) in March 2025 as planned and be ready for community resilience projects by 2026. Each step in the process solidifies the Pacific’s #leadership in driving #community-centred, #sustainableclimatesolutions that prioritise equity and justice in #climateaction.

#partnerships This morning, Secretary General, Baron Waqa, was visited by the High Commissioner of India to Fiji, H.E. Palaniswamy Subramanyan Karthigeyan, for a farewell call. H.E. Karthigeyan will be completing his tenure in Fiji at the end of this month. SG Waqa conveyed the Forum's best wishes to High Commissioner Karthigeyan and gifted him with a gift from the Pacific.

Pacific Islands Forum members gathered in Suva today for the Forum Officials Committee Budget Session. Chaired by Niue, the 2-day meeting is a space for officials from the 18 member countries to deliberate on issues pertaining to the Forum Secretariat. High on the agenda for this meeting is the passage of the 2025-2027 Annual Work Programme and Budget. Secretary General Baron Waqa, was pleased to welcome the Chinese Government Special Envoy for Pacific Island Countries, Qian Bo, to the Secretariat for a courtesy call. The courtesy call offered an opportunity for both parties to discuss how the Chinese government can build on its interaction with the region and Forum members.
