The US Navy partnered with the army to develop a ballistic missile for both services, but withdrew when solid fuels became a practical proposition. Under the leadership of RADM William Raborn, the US Navy set up its own project: the Polaris weapon system. In 1960, the first missile-armed nuclear-powered submarine (SSBN) left on patrol, with forty more to follow. Two years later, when Britain’s Blue Streak and Skybolt plans were cancelled, Harold Macmillan and John F. In the largest Army Reserve exercise in three decades, nearly 2000 personnel practised a rapid deployment to Australia’s north to respond to simulated security threats. Soldiers from 11th and 13th Brigades, and the Regional Force Surveillance Group alongside maritime and air capabilities, formed security response task units in Derby and Cairns during Exercise Austral Shield 2024, held from July 12-28. In the east, 11th Brigade soldiers from Townsville, Brisbane and Sydney deployed by road to secure infrastructure at Cairns Airport, Barron Gorge Hydroelectric Power Plant and HMAS Cairns. Attacks by the opposing force were light at first, with discrete surveillance that escalated to drive-by shootings, improvised explosive devices (IEDs) and fully armed, close-quarters combat. Army forces worked with local authorities in both states to enhance security, including joint patrols with Australian Federal Police in Cairns. The task force also conducted offensives against an enemy at Cowley Beach, Tully and Townsville. Meanwhile, in the west, 13th Brigade deployed from Perth to Derby in north-western Australia to secure the town and RAAF Base Curtain. Soldiers worked out of Derby Airport to clear enemy from the town’s infrastructure, including a night-time clearance of the fishing club. They also conducted joint vehicle checkpoints and patrols with West Australian police officers, including clearance of an IED at the water purification plant. The Australian Government has expressed its concerns to the Chinese Government following an unsafe and unprofessional interaction with a People’s Liberation Army – Air Force (PLA-AF) fighter aircraft. On 4 May 2024, HMAS Hobart was in international waters in the Yellow Sea undertaking routine activities as part of Operation Argos, Australia’s contribution to the international effort to enforce United Nations Security Council sanctions against North Korea. During these activities, a Royal Australian Navy MH-60R helicopter launched from HMAS Hobart was intercepted by a PLA-AF fighter aircraft. The People’s Liberation Army – Air Force aircraft released flares across the flight path of the Royal Australian Navy helicopter. This was an unsafe manoeuvre which posed a risk to the aircraft and personnel. While there were no injuries sustained by ADF personnel or damage caused to the MH-60R helicopter, the safety and wellbeing of ADF personnel continues to be utmost priority. the Australian Defence Force expects all countries, including China, to operate their militaries in a professional and safe manner. The Chinese Defense Ministry’s press office announced earlier in the day that the People’s Liberation Army (PLA) launched ‘Joint Sword-2024B’ military drills near Taiwan. "On October 14, the PLA Eastern Theater Command dispatched its troops of army, navy, air force and rocket force to conduct joint military drills code-named ‘Joint Sword-2024B’ in the Taiwan Strait and areas to the north, south and east of Taiwan Island," the statement said citing Senior Captain Li Xi, spokesperson of the Chinese PLA Eastern Theater Command. Lai Qingde, the Taiwan administration's head, stated on October 10 that Taipei's efforts to maintain the status quo in the Taiwan Strait are unchanged. The island will defend its "state sovereignty," he said. Chinese Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Mao Ning responded that "Taiwan has never been a country and will never become one, it has no kind of sovereignty at all." On May 20, Taiwan held an inauguration ceremony for the island's new leader, Lai Ching-te. Three days later the PLA Eastern Theater Command announced the start of the Joint Sword 2024A exercise around Taiwan, as well as near the islands of Kinmen, Matsu, Wuqiu and Dongyin. The exercise involved land, missile, naval and air forces. Taiwan has been governed by its own administration since 1949, when the remnants of the Kuomintang forces led by Chiang Kai-shek (1887-1975) fled there after their defeat in the Chinese Civil War. Since then, the island has retained the flag and some other attributes of the former Republic of China that existed on the mainland before the Communists came to power.
