The Cyber Leadership Series is out, and what a fantastic session it was with (JC) Jean-Christophe Gaillard, Founder and CEO of Corix Partners, a London-based Boutique Management Consultancy Firm focused on Cyber Security Strategy, Organisation, and Governance challenges. In our discussion, we explore his latest book, The Cybersecurity Spiral of Failure - and How to Break Out of It. JC believes many CISOs have simply remained technologists and firefighters, trapped in an increasingly obsolete mindset, pushing bottom-up tools, risk-based and tech-driven narratives, disconnected from what the board wants: resilience and execution. The first step in this evolution is for the board to view cybersecurity as a business problem, not a technology problem. He refutes the idea that board members lack the necessary skills and adds that the hard reality is that the approaches most have been pushing for twenty years have not worked. Thanks to Rinki Sethi for her continued work ensuring this topic gets appropriate visibility. I remember when I first saw a post from Myrna Soto about her first board position. My thoughts were at there time: Congrats Myrna Soto! That board is lucky to have Myrna a world class CISO and business person. We are now going to see alot of CISO's be elevated to boards now. The elevation of CISO's to board positions continues but at a fairly slow pace. There are a number of reasons for this but as with many things long standing entrenched beliefs remain a hurdle. At the recent excellent NACD conference on Cyber there was a panel on cyber governance. The consensus of the panel was that if there was a CISO on the board then they would talk cyber risk with that organizations CISO at a level the rest of the board couldn't understand so they shouldn't be on the board till the board increased their cyber knowledge. At that point an attendee stood up, raised her hand and said I am a CISO and on a board of directors. The panel lead then said well you are a unicorn. Then two other CISO's stood up...It was a very cool moment to observe. But it shows that the CISO stereotype of being overly technical and not business savvy enough still remains. For this reason, I am very excited to attend the upcoming event held by the Digital Directors Network(DDN). Bob Zukis and the DDN have been doing a ton of work trying to change the cyber governance model so that CISO's are more active in governance across the board.
