Two awesome days at the Service Design Global Conference. Many things are still stirring, but a couple of quick thoughts. 💪 As designer's we need to adapt to failure and trying and changing - maybe even more than before. 🤝 We are designing with and often for people - people who are a beautiful complex mess. We need to try to tame the messiness by understanding emotions, using discourses that others understand, and concentrating on the outcomes that help the people around us. But in the end, we need to be good at adaption because there will always be unintended consequences. 🌍 The incredibly important topic of inclusion, the need for bigger changes, and planetary views were strongly present. Though I love the inspiration and aiming for a better future - the discourse of designers saving the world feels almost overwhelming to me. I would have loved to hear also about the baby steps. 🌞It is an inspiration to be with like-minded people - even though I am privileged to belong to a great team every day at Posti Group Oyj. Thank you #sdgc2024 #servicedesign PS. 🎃 Loved the idea of zombie processes by Andy Polaine. Have often thought about how much intelligence is lost in organizational changes - how much does that organizational dance slow down progress, or does it? There is a fine line between the Neo-Luddite "this will never work" and the Techo-PollyAnna "Why aren't we using AI for everything!" I agree that #LLMs can *help* with this but we are so INCREDIBLY far from code "written and managed by AI" that to say this is obvious begs an even more obvious retorte: Show me. Show me a company using code written and managed by AI. Please don't give me a half baked demo, show me a shipping system companies are using now. Please note, I'm not saying this won't happen! I actually believe it will (eventually). But at the same time, the distance between "it might work" and "it is shipping" has never been greater. We need to be building and sharing systems that do this and build, very carefully, up to these systems. There are going to be insights and learnings (and lots of painful lessons) all along the way. It's cheap (and fairly risk free) to say this is obvious and more so, to criticize people that are are taking a more measured approach.

A couple of years ago, at React Finland 2022, I shared my insights on a topic that is near and dear to my heart - benchmarking for design systems. As a consultant for design systems, I often find myself advising clients on the best practices and strategies to adopt. One of the recurring challenges we've faced is determining the right standard to benchmark against. With so many diverse design systems out there, it can be overwhelming to determine which one should serve as the baseline. To address this, I shared the results of a comprehensive study I conducted, analyzing dozens of design systems and their various features and attributes. The goal was to develop a structured approach to industry research, one that would empower teams to make informed strategic decisions and identify effective implementation strategies. The result was a Miro board that serves as a meticulously curated collection of design system examples, with each section linked to corresponding features and content across different systems. This resource has become an indispensable tool in our work at Bridge The Gap, as we constantly refer to it when discussing design system requirements with our clients. The visual representation and the wealth of examples help us communicate the subject matter more effectively and pinpoint the features that are most crucial to our clients' needs. I'm sharing this talk from 2 years ago because it has recently resurfaced in one of our current projects at Bridge The Gap. We just had a discussion around the features the design system documentation website needs, and this comprehensive Miro board once again proved to be incredibly valuable. It allowed us to effectively showcase the options for the features our blended team (us-consultants and the client's developers and designers) was seeking. Accessibility is at the core in Sweden! When I moved here I witnessed different times when accessibility was embraced in Sweden. Whether it is convenient public transportation or a feeling of inclusiveness. They also follow strong accessibility guidelines in software products which allowed me to have an in-depth understanding of accessibility. Rohan Mishra shared this video, in which UX Design expert Garima Mehta shares her knowledge of accessibility in design. I have found this video immensely helpful, and I believe it would help you, too. Summary: - Clear page titles - Turn off the images and investigate - Turn off sound, anything missing? - Test gray scale contrast, color etc. any disappearing text? - Ditch mouse, use only keyboard. Is everything still usable? - Resize text much larger, and see if makes sense - Quick source code check, formatting and heading tag structure - Check multimedia alt texts manual testing - Color contrast (web aim contrast checker) - Stark for figma and adobe and much more! Accessibility design standards are always part of my process and we work hard to create great designs that meet required standards. There's a whole host of aspects to address that don't just apply websites - these are just a few; Colour contrast: Keeping at least 70% difference in colour value between the text and the background. Tints: Avoiding colour combinations that feature tints of the same colour. Glare: Using off-white/pale pastel backgrounds instead of white, to reduce glare. Text on an image: Only place text on top of images if there is sufficient contrast. One of the key lessons that I learnt from Jared Spool's workshop on Outcome Driven UX metrics at UX Nordic Conference was the power of deep UX research to innovate through the identification of latent user needs. He explained that a latent need sounds like “Wow. I never knew I needed this, and now I can’t live without it.” 'People don’t know they have these needs. So when we uncover them we can think of innovative ways to meet them. Innovation isn’t about inventing something new. Innovation is about creating value that didn’t exist before. Innovation comes when we turn a good, or poor experience, into a great experience.' "Updating our language gives us an opportunity to be clearer about what we really mean, and have more nuanced discussions about sub-categories of bad patterns. For example, we could talk about: - deceptive patterns (this is the option now favored by Harry Brignull, who coined the original term) - inaccessible patterns - confusing patterns - discriminatory patterns - exclusionary patterns All of these terms provide more detail, and help people to understand more about the specific problem we’ve encountered with a solution."

Often in design, the most impactful part is not the tangible output This is especially true for disciplines like Service Design The value is in: - the process, collaboration and comms along the way - the systems that are changed for the better - the mindset shift that comes with good facilitation Give Design the agency to work beyond the pixels and watch the magic happen :) #Design #ServiceDesign

Friday UX Fail: Over thinking Health & Safety. A lot of projects fail because of the lazy, under-thinking of product, project or team leaders, but sometimes we have the opposite problem - over-thinking things. And no where is that more obvious and painful than when Health & Safety get involved and bubble wrap the world in precautionary rules and guidelines to avoid things that could happen (but never would happen). These are funny examples, but H&S over reactions cause huge cost and delay to projects in order to avoid every conceivable negative outcome (however impossible) happening. When an autistic person does this it's called catastrophising. So why is it that when H&S do it it's called due diligence. I honestly think I could run a weekly post on H&S over precaution madness, and I welcome any real world examples anyone else might want to share. #ux #uxsanctuary #uxfail
