"Ownership strategy can be thought of as a map that guides understanding of what the owners want from the company in the future, what values and ground rules they want to be observed and implemented within the company. At its simplest, an ownership strategy is said to represent the owners’ expression of intent regarding what they want to happen to the company, which business areas the company can engage in, and what kinds of risks it is willing to take. The ownership strategy also addresses the owners’ expectations regarding profit distribution and, for example, the extent and scope of ownership in the future." Why is it important? "A clear ownership strategy increases transparency within the company, enhances and focuses operations, and at its best, strengthens the company’s competitive advantage in a changing market." Why must the CEO know and understand the ownership strategy? 🌟 "The CEO is responsible for ensuring that things are executed within the organization. When the CEO is aware of the ownership strategy, it ensures that the company's decisions and operations align with the owners’ goals and expectations in day-to-day activities. If these expectations are unknown to the CEO, it is quite likely that words will not translate into actions."" 🌟 "The CEO holds a role, where decisions are made to support the owners’ long-term vision and objectives. It is difficult to imagine that these long-term decisions would align correctly without knowledge of the ownership strategy. This likely impacts the company’s ability to maintain and improve its competitiveness in the future." 🌟 "When the ownership strategy is clear and known to the CEO, owners can trust that the company is in good hands and being managed in their best interests. While it’s clear that the board has its own role in this process, withholding the ownership strategy from the CEO complicates progress, creates unnecessary uncertainty, and fosters distrust between the executive management and the owners. This benefits no one." Is there any reason why the CEO shouldn’t be aware of the ownership strategy? "We can easily find numerous examples of how owner conflicts, unclear, or contradictory expectations have negatively affected a company’s operations and value—these stories rarely fall into the success category. In such an uncertain environment, it is challenging for the CEO to succeed. An ownership strategy ensures a unified expression of the owners’ will. Our job on the board is to act in the best interests of the company and its owners. This is best achieved when we collectively understand the goals and expectations, enabling us to make wise decisions and ensure we help the CEO succeed. Let’s ensure that the ownership strategy is documented and transparently shared with both the board and the CEO."
