New Perspectives on Ethiopian Land Governance👏👏
Developments and New Perspectives on Land Governance: Stakeholder Engagement The Land Governance II project, in partnership with the Ministry of Agriculture, hosted an impactful workshop bringing together stakeholders, researchers, policymakers, and development partners to tackle one of Ethiopia’s critical challenges: land fragmentation and its implications for agricultural transformation and food security. Opening the event, Mr. Ulf Neupert, Project Manager of GIZ-Land Governance II Project, underscored the importance of participatory land policy instruments like land consolidation to mitigate fragmentation and drive agricultural growth. He highlighted the need for collaboration and innovation to achieve a sustainable, equitable land governance system. Our esteemed guest, Dr. Getachew Diriba, Senior Advisor to the Minister of Agriculture, connected the issue to broader themes such as governance, property rights, and food systems transformation, making a compelling case for urgent action. During the panel discussion, Dr.Daniel Behailu from GIZ, Dr.Zemen Haddis from USAID, and Dr. Aweke Mulualem from Ethiopian Agricultural Transformation Institute (ATI) explored opportunities of land use consolidation and emphasized integrated land management policies as key to a sustainable agri-food system. Closing the workshop, Mr. Tigistu G/Meskel of the Ministry of Agriculture stressed the importance of capacity building and collaboration to unify land governance systems, improve valuation and registration services, and enhance professional standards for land administration. Key takeaways: ✅A "fit-for-purpose" approach suits Ethiopia's diverse land conditions. ✅Land certification enhances tenure security, investment, and productivity. ✅Coordination between ministries is vital for effective governance. ✅Universities must play a central role in building technical and institutional capacity. ✅Ethiopia can learn from countries with long-standing land consolidation practices. Studies presented during the conference👇 ➡️Meta-Analysis of Socio-Economic Impacts of Land Fragmentation in Ethiopia ( https://lnkd.in/gRaJUaD4) ➡️ Comparative Analysis of Land Policy Instruments (https://lnkd.in/ghcQs7sn) ➡️Land Governance Challenges in the Transformation of Peri-Urban Areas What’s next? As LaGo II transitions to LaGo III in 2025, we aim to establish a conducive legal framework and strengthen land administration capacity to ensure the effective integration of reforms into services for landholders. The Land Governance project is implemented on behalf of the German Government.
