💡 [TIP] How do you handle unexpected news as an Engineering Manager? In day-to-day work, you and your teams sometimes receive unexpected news that can shake the team's motivation. As Engineering Manager, how are you handling this? Here is how I’m approaching these situations in case it helps you reinforce your own mindset: 1️⃣ Understand this reality: companies evolve. One day, your best teammate might leave. Another day, you might decide to move on. And on another day, the company might make changes. That’s just how it works. 2️⃣ So, I ask myself this question: What opportunities can my teams and I find in this situation? 3️⃣ If you're following step number 3️⃣ , I can ensure you that you'll find at least 1 opportunity to grow. 4️⃣ Communicate this to your teams and remain open to deeply listening to their thoughts and proposals. 5️⃣ Create your own plan to seize the opportunity. The ideal world doesn’t exist. And perhaps it doesn’t because “ideal” means something different to everyone. 🙂 This may sound obvious, but when we receive unexpected news, we tend to ask ourselves why and try to understand it, investing energy in something that probably isn’t up to us. This leads to frustration and exhaustion when it’s unnecessary. I choose to keep fighting to protect my #energy and #motivation. What about you? Software development often experiences a slowdown as projects progress. Recognising this challenge, Jack proposes a solution known as Technical Coherence. This approach aims to counteract the deceleration by aligning engineering efforts with organisational objectives. At the core of Technical Coherence lies the identification of user experience domains within the product. These domains represent distinct sets of user interactions and needs, guiding the development process towards more focused and coherent outcomes. Furthermore, Jack emphasises the importance of identifying shared domains across user experience domains. These shared domains encompass functionalities or components that are essential to multiple aspects of the product, fostering cohesion and efficiency in development efforts. To implement Technical Coherence effectively, the Jack suggests organising engineering efforts into three layers: Product Engineering, Domain Engineering, and Infrastructure Engineering. Each layer serves a specific function, from delivering user-facing features to providing foundational infrastructure. Product Engineering focuses on meeting user needs and enhancing the overall user experience, while Domain Engineering addresses company-specific but widely shared functionalities. Meanwhile, Infrastructure Engineering ensures the stability and scalability of the technical infrastructure supporting the entire organisation. Jack goes on to discuss a staffing strategy tailored to each engineering layer, aiming to strike a balance between expertise and resource allocation. This strategy emphasises the continuous improvement and adaptation of the organisation to evolving technologies and industry standards. Overall, Technical Coherence offers a structured approach to overcoming the challenges of software development slowdown by promoting alignment, cohesion, and efficiency across engineering efforts. I've recently embarked on learning Zig by implementing the container PVR-SDK of Pantavisor in Zig. This approach allows me to focus solely on mastering the language, leveraging my existing knowledge of PVR-SDK's functionality. The journey has been immensely rewarding. I'm particularly impressed with Zig's design, which shares some favorable features with Go, such as the `defer` statement. Considering Zig is at version 0.13, its standard library is robust and met all my requirements for this project. I needed to develop a CLI argument parser, a command-line interface, an HTTP server to serve assets, and route some API calls. Zig's standard library facilitated all these needs seamlessly. Although Zig lacks interfaces like Go, I found that creating equivalent implementations, while involving more boilerplate, is quite straightforward once you understand the process. One of my primary motivations for exploring Zig was to produce small binaries suitable for embedded devices. Zig delivered on this front spectacularly. The final binary, including the HTTP server and CLI with gzip, tar, JSON decoder, and encoder functionalities, is just 401KB. Currently, I have about 70% of the PVR-SDK features implemented in Zig, and the results have been highly satisfactory. https://lnkd.in/eC9zeXjC

All engineering managers can confirm, the number one quality they wish their software engineers had is: Being proactive. When you’re proactive, you’re helping your manager help you. Trust me, your managers will notice and appreciate it. Here’s what being proactive looks like: - Taking initiative: Don’t wait for someone to tell you what to do. If you see something that needs fixing or an opportunity to improve things do something about it! - Thinking ahead: Anticipate potential issues before they happen and have solutions ready. Think of it like chess—planning a few moves ahead. - Pushing information upstream: Keep your manager informed rather than waiting to be asked. It builds trust and keeps everyone aligned. - Raising concerns early: Speak up when something feels off. It’s much easier to address issues when they’re small. - Owning your work: Take full responsibility for your projects. When things go wrong, don’t look to blame—focus on fixing and learning.
