A couple of weeks ago marked a significant milestone for me – one year as the Strategy & Business Transformation Office Lead at AZ Spain. This journey has been nothing short of incredible, filled with learning, growth, and exciting challenges. Reflecting on the past year, here are a few key learnings and highlights: 📢 Embracing Innovation: At AZ innovation is at the heart of everything we do. I've had the privilege to work alongside some of the brightest minds, driving initiatives that push the boundaries of healthcare and improve the lives of our patients. 📢 Collaborative Spirit: The power of teamwork and collaboration has been a cornerstone of our success. Working with diverse teams across different functions has not only enriched my perspective but also reinforced the importance of leveraging diverse strengths to achieve our common goals. 📢 Adaptability and Resilience: The past year has underscored the importance of being adaptable and resilient in the face of change. Today, the European Medicines Agency recommended not granting a marketing authorisation for Leqembi (lecanemab). The main reason for that decision was, according to the EMA statement, that "the observed effect of Leqembi on delaying cognitive decline does not counterbalance the risk of serious side events associated with the medicine, in particular the frequent occurrence of amyloid-related imaging abnormalities (ARIA), involving swelling and potential bleedings in the brain of patients who received Leqembi." At Ace Alzheimer Center Barcelona we believe this decision entails major concerns for the clinical, medical, and care community as well as for the field of research. First, the access of European patients to the same options and opportunities as the citizens from other countries. Secondly, the effect it can have in terms of research and investment in research. The time to calculate the prediction of a heart digital twin is going to decrease from many hours to 30 seconds, and it will be done on a desktop computer rather than on a supercomputer, allowing to make it part of the daily clinical workflow.
