The startup ecosystem in the Iberian Peninsula — the region encompassing Spain and Portugal — has been on a roll the last couple of years. The value of Spanish startups surpassed €100 billion in 2023, according to Dealroom data, with venture investment of €2.2 billion across some 850 rounds. Meanwhile, Portugal has produced a slew of VC firms such as Shilling, Indico, Armilar, Bynd, and more. Lisbon-based venture firm Faber has become the latest to double down on the region — it recently launched its third fund, marking a first close of €31 million (about $33.9 million). The fund is anchored by the European Investment Fund (EIF) and has received major contributions from the NATO Innovation Fund and Portugal’s Caixa Capital, as well as family offices. It’s aiming to raise €60 million (about $64.2 million) in total. The new fund, titled Faber Tech Fund III, will target pre-seed and seed-stage startups in deep tech, AI, robotics, and biotech across Portugal, Spain, and the Netherlands.

🚀 SPAIN-LATAM SCALE-UP Initiative Launched to Attract Latin American Startups to Spain!! 📢 The SPAIN-LATAM SCALE-UP initiative, led by ICEX-Invest in Spain, BID LAB, and Endeavor, aims to attract Latin American startups and scale-ups interested in expanding into Spain as a gateway to the European market. A selected group of startups from Latin America will participate in a week-long immersion programme within the Spanish entrepreneurial ecosystem. 👏 During this time, they will engage with institutions, venture capital funds, corporations, accelerators, and other startups that have successfully expanded global operations from Spain. Participants will gain key insights into the Spanish business climate and receive expert guidance on legal, operational, and technological aspects necessary to establish a business in Spain and scale globally. What We're Looking For: 🔍Startups from the 26 countries of Latin America and the Caribbean that are members of the IDB, with legal and fiscal headquarters in the region and active operations there. There's a huge funding gap in venture capital, especially at the early stages (pre-seed and seed), and it's even more noticeable in less developed ecosystems like Spain. Over the past 10 years, the funds that were successful in backing early-stage startups have grown significantly (avg. 3x), and now, they tend to focus on more mature companies in Series A stages and beyond. But what’s really exciting is that more and more experienced entrepreneurs—those who’ve been in the trenches—are stepping into the investor role and launching funds to support early-stage startups. I really think we’re at the beginning of a new chapter for venture capital in Spain. Super excited to share that we’ve announced the launch of two new funds this month! Today, we officially introduced Real Ventures (€30M), and just two weeks ago, we launched Itnig Capital (€15M). 🚀 Venture capital is showing early signs of recovery, driven by the decline in inflation and the lowering of interest rates.
