ECB vs Bitcoin: vol 4 👊💥 Last week, the European Central Bank (ECB) released a paper claiming that early Bitcoin adopters are stealing economic value from latecomers. You can find the paper here 👇 The narrative presented in this paper is one of the most aggressive towards Bitcoin as a tool, and it's now clear that central bank economists see it as a threat to be attacked by any means. Let's quickly recap the stages and attacks on Bitcoin: 🔴 2010: Won't work 🔴 2015: Too risky 🔴 2021: Bad for the environment 🔴 2024: Not fair (ECB) Instead of studying #Bitcoin as a technological paradigm shift similar to the Internet, the authors introduce the argument that its "early adopters" are "increasing their real wealth and consumption" at the expense of latecomers. They continue by reaching the central point of the paper: advocating for legislation "to prevent bitcoin prices from rising or to see them disappear altogether" to avoid "the division of society." The authors never present or study the reason that has driven 15 years of #adoption and development of this tool, but focus only on a few points to support a thesis that is already wrong from the start. Bitcoin is simply distributed software and the first digital hard asset 🟠 The interesting thing is to understand why the authors haven't studied years and decades of bank bailouts, stealing from citizens who don't receive the distribution of newly printed money but only suffer its consequences 🏦 But the real question is: why attack a free tool? If the ECB did its job of maintaining monetary stability, perhaps no one in Europe would worry about Bitcoin. Right? What do you think?

Stablecoin issuer Tether is claiming that it made a net profit of $5.2 billion in H1 2024... If we were to double that for the year, it would put Tether in league with some of the largest companies in the world (as listed below) Anyone who believes Tether's numbers is either paid to do so or has not done their homework Despite having been in operation since 2014, Tether has never produced a full audit of its accounts Tether’s “attestation reports", such as the one linked below, are not based on unrestricted access to Tether’s financial accounts, as would be the case for an audit Instead, the producer of the attestations, BDO Italia, looks at a “significant sample” of Tether’s stated reserves and verifies their current market value In other words, you have to take Tether's word for it that they have the money they say they have... Tether is supposedly a $115 billion financial institution... Galaxy has just published their latest quarterly report on crypto venture capital. So, how does the health of the private markets look like? • Venture capitalists invested around $3.2 billion in Q2. • Although deal count slightly decreased from 603 to 577 deals QoQ, the median pre-money valuation surged substantially from $19 million to $37 million, reaching levels last seen in Q4 2021. This surge can be attributed to a combination of limited VC dollars in the space and increased interest and competition among crypto VCs. When it comes to institutional tokenization adoption, is it better to embrace blockchain all the way? ⬇️ ECB is hedging its bet. It has plenty of trials running involving: - DvP transactions in primary and secondary markets - securities lifecycle management - automated wholesale payments - payment-versus-payment transactions ➡️Participants involved can choose between three different settlement solutions, but only one of them is a wholesale central bank digital currency (CBDC) provided by the Banque de France. The other two options: - Deutsche Bundesbank is providing its trigger payment solution which links to Target 2 - Bank of Italy is providing a TIPS Hashlink offering The Bundesbank’s three layer trigger payment solution involves 1️⃣an asset chain in which enterprises can be involved 2️⃣a trigger chain as a programmability layer where only commercial banks and central bank participate 3️⃣ the trigger chain links to the RTGS to trigger the payments. It is not clear to what extent can a trigger chain approach replicate the full programmability of a token based CBDC. But it does illustrate an important challenge facing all institutions - the need to integrate legacy systems with blockchain technologies. Currently data live on two distinct systems: legacy and blockchain. To enable a tokenized financial system in the future, data must first be able to travel between the two before it can gradually be fully migrated to blockchain. The Emerging Market of Regulated Stablecoins: A VC's Take Regulated stablecoins, such as the ones falling under the recent MiCA Regulation in the EU, present a complex yet promising landscape for venture capital investors. While the potential for disruption in B2B use cases is significant, it's crucial to approach this space with a nuanced and realistic perspective. The current stablecoin market, dominated by Tether and Circle, primarily serves crypto on/off ramping and remittance, with a heavy focus on USD-pegged assets. However, new regulations worldwide might unlock a broader spectrum of applications, particularly in B2B sectors like securities trading, real-world asset trading, and corporate treasury management. These B2B use cases offer compelling advantages, including 24/7 real-time settlement, cost reduction, and enhanced transparency. However, widespread adoption hinges on significant adaptations to existing IT infrastructure and the large-scale tokenization of assets. This could easily take 3-5 years for the ecosystems to adapt. For VCs, stablecoin issuers offer a lucrative investment opportunity thanks to a highly scalable and profitable business model. However, running a stablecoin operation requires a high OPEX and stringent regulatory compliance measures. Additionally, exit strategies for stablecoin issuers are complex, as changes in ownership could undermine trust. Beyond stablecoin issuing, a rich ecosystem of investment opportunities exists in the infrastructure layer, encompassing tokenization platforms, custody tech, and compliance solutions. Many of these components, while already existing in the web3 world, are not always optimized for stablecoin use cases, presenting a fertile ground for further innovation in the space. Finally, it is important to recognize that stablecoins also face competition from wholesale CBDCs and tokenized bank deposits.
