Are European wind modelling methods fit for purpose in APAC’s complex conditions? Reliance on Weibull distribution and other established early-stage resource assessment approaches may be leading offshore wind developers in APAC to both over- and underestimate local wind speeds. Youwind’s recent case study of a typical project in South Korea shows just how much Annual Energy Production (AEP) estimates vary between Weibull distribution, freemium ERA5 time series and premium Vortex Time Series. With significant financial value at stake, developers in APAC need to invest earlier in high-resolution Time Series data to produce reliable AEP estimates. Despite attractive technical conditions there were no bids for the biggest Danish offshore tender in history of the The North Sea projects—North Sea I A1, A2, and A3. The tender, which offered 3GW of offshore wind capacity included no subsidies, an annual concession payment, and 20% state co-ownership in each project. The remaining three projects of other 3GW, Hesselø, Kattegat, and Kriegers Flak II, have a bidding deadline of April 1, 2025. Pratibha will be joining the team as a Business Developer focusing on expanding our reach in the APAC region, as she brings in strong research, networking, and data analysis skills to the team, thanks to her training as a researcher.
