  • Aspect-Based Sentiment Analysis of Amazon Reviews for Fitness Tracking Devices

    The year 2012 marked the birth of a new class of wireless wearable fitness trackers (e.g., Fitbit One) that track daily activity from the count of steps taken and calories burned to stairs climbed and sleep patterns. As the recent trend in research extends the use of these devices to a broader range of applications, questioning the reliability and accuracy of these devices became much more legitimate. In this research, we assess the public opinion on these devices through utilizing novel sentiment analysis techniques to build a fully automated aspect-based sentiment summarizer that transfers the sheer amount of Amazon reviews of these products to a user-friendly summary. Product features are extracted using the text of reviews, the description and features sections on Amazon. Another approach is also proposed that extracts the names of competing products and compares their reviews to separate the features from the other common nouns. To enhance sentiment classication, the system combines two sentiment lexicons, handles complex negation types through parsing while handling semantic relations, and assigns the sentiment tothe proper product and feature. The proposed summarizer’s components generally outperform the state-of-the-art methods with notable improvements in detecting product features, competing products and negation and can easily generalize to other domains.

    We aim to participate with this project in Robocup 2014 competition.

    The year 2012 marked the birth of a new class of fitness tracking devices (e.g., Nike+ Fuelband and Fitbit One) that are capable of estimating the number of steps taken, stairs climbed, distance traveled, calories burned and other measures on a daily basis. As the recent trend in research extends the use of these devices to a broader range of applications, questioning the reliability and accuracy of these devices became much more legitimate. In my bachelor thesis research, a set of the leading fitness trackers was evaluated by mining people’s opinion and through human testing as follows.

    1) Novel sentiment analysis techniques were utilized to build a fully automated aspect-based sentiment summarizer that transfers the sheer amount of Amazon reviews of these products to a user friendly summary. The system dynamically extracts the features of products in reviews, the competing products and what people think on each feature. Many challenges in sentiment analysis were handled to accurately detect the sentiment per feature including negation, the context of words and change of sentiment based on Part-Of-Speech.
    The summarizer was used to mine people’s opinion on leading fitness trackers.

    2) A set of the leading fitness trackers was evaluated through human testing by designing a set of physical experiments.

    The project resulted in a paper in the post-proceedings of the 18th PAKDD conference in Springer.

    Controlled a car through an iPad. The iPad's orientation was used to change the direction and speed of the car. (Technologies used: Arduino, Zigbee, iOS development, controlling motors)

  • Minesweeper's Robot

    We participated in a team of nine to build a robot to detect surface and buried mines in the desert. The robot scans a map in the desert to find the locations of mines and sends the location to a remote PC where the locations and types of mines are visualized. We participated with it in the Minesweepers competition and took the fourth place.

    In order to foster robotics research and its applications in the area of humanitarian demining in the world, the IEEE Robotics and Automation Society – Egypt Chapter (Winner of 2012 Chapter of the Year Award in IEEE Region 8) organizes Minesweepers: Towards a Landmine-free World as the first international outdoor robotic competition on humanitarian demining. It aims at raising the public awareness of the seriousness of the landmines and UXOs contamination and the role of science and technology in solving this problem and motivates professors, engineers and students working on innovative solutions for this serious problem.

    In this competition, each participating team constructed a teleoperated/autonomous unmanned ground/aerial vehicle that should be able to search for underground anti-personnel mines and aboveground unexploded ordnances. The position and the type of each detected object were visualized and overlaid on the minefield map. The robot had to be able to navigate through rough terrain that mimics a real minefield.

    A special version of the competition entitled Junior Minesweepers is dedicated to primary and secondary school students.



    Minesweepers: Towards a Landmine-free World is sponsored and hosted this year by the German University in Cairo (GUC). The competition is supported by Executive Secretariat for the Demining & Development of the North West Coast, Ministry of International Cooperation, Mines Action & Human Rights Foundation and Protection Against Armaments & Consequences and African Robotics Network (AFRON).
