The Marseille Tramway Extension project (ETNS1) has received financial support from the European Union, including a €15 million grant and a €100 million loan from the European Investment Bank (EIB), making up a total of €115 million. The project is part of a broader investment effort by Métropole d’Aix-Marseille-Provence, launched in 2021, with an overall budget of €320 million aimed at enhancing the region's public transport system.
Marseille tramway extension receives €115 million from the EU
- 11 October 2024
The ETNS1 project will extend the North-South tram line by 6.2 kilometers, build new maintenance and technical facilities for the rolling stock, and improve the surrounding landscape and infrastructure. These developments aim to boost public transport services, reduce reliance on private vehicles, and promote sustainable mobility in the region.
The European support comes through the Public Sector Loan Facility (PSLF), part of the EU’s Just Transition Mechanism (JTM), which aims to help regions like Bouches du Rhône in transitioning towards a climate-neutral economy. The blending of loans and grants ensures financial viability for projects like ETNS1, which may not generate sufficient revenue on their own.
This collaboration between the European Investment Bank, the European Union, and local authorities highlights the ongoing commitment to fostering sustainable urban mobility in Marseille.
