In fact, in 2020, electric vehicles made up 4% of global new passenger vehicle sales. This is a figure projected to rise to 80% by 2030. This shift has led to concerns about the safety of BEVs, particularly regarding fire hazards. “The truth is that the risk of BEVs is not greater than that of internal combustion engine vehicles (ICEVs). BEV fires are much less frequent than ICEV fires in relation to the vehicle fleets. But the hazards associated with Li-ion batteries do differ from those of conventional fuels”, says Jonna Hynynen, researcher at RISE Research Institutes of Sweden. LET’S TALK #BATTERIES Earlier this year I met with several senior Northvolt executives and toured their Skellefteå campus.  My message to them was that far more startups die from indigestion than starvation, and to focus all efforts and resources upon improving cell production at Ett.  Failure to execute swiftly would turn their grand vision into a shattered dream as customers and investors are impatient and intolerant of delays. What I viewed and heard reflected a systemic deficiency in expertise and experience in cell production.  In my opinion their critical mistake at inception was to forgo partnering with an experienced cell manufacturer, believing they could amass and develop the necessary expertise in a timely, cost-effective fashion.  I pointed out to them the huge disparity in output between Ett and Ultium Lordstown that broke ground at similar times. I believe the founders’ vision remains achievable provided it partners with an established cell manufacturer in this next chapter. #batterystorage #electricvehicles #renewables #energystorage #energy #solidstate #battery #microgrid #DER

Wouldn't it be great with an open source and easy to use 'energy grid simulator' that could calculate the claims below? Being able to easily share the assumptions behind the numbers being thrown would qualify the discussion a lot. I agree with the statements here but I would have liked to back that claim up with a link to a techno economic simulation that shows it. If you know of any such simulator, please share!

Wärtsilä secures China’s largest-ever methanol newbuild order Technology group Wärtsilä will supply the methanol-fuelled auxiliary engines for five new container vessels for COSCO Shipping Lines Co., Ltd and seven new container vessels for Orient Overseas Container Line. Each vessel will operate with three 8-cylinder and two 6-cylinder Wärtsilä 32M engines. This is the Chinese maritime sector’s largest order to date for methanol-fuelled newbuild vessels. The order was booked by Wärtsilä in December 2023. To complement the solution, the ships will be equipped with the Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR) exhaust cleaning systems and alternators. These will be supplied through Wärtsilä’s joint venture company, CWEC (Shanghai) Company Ltd. (‘CWEC’). The Wärtsilä 32M methanol-fuelled engine has received type approval certificates from several classification societies around the world. Studies have shown that using methanol instead of heavy fuel oil can cut CO₂ and other GHG emissions.
