Novozymes has combined with Chr. Hansen to become Novonesis: linkedin.com/company/novonesis. This global biosolutions company of 10,000 people is transforming how the world produces, consumes and lives. In 30-plus industries, its biosolutions help businesses meet their needs and the needs of our planet. Novozymes was formed in 2000 when Novo Nordisk split into three companies: Novo Nordisk A/S, Novozymes A/S and Novo A/S. Novozymes was the world leader in biological solutions with a commitment to Rethink Tomorrow. It served 130 markets with enzymatic, microbial and advanced protein solutions. The company’s solutions enabled higher agricultural yields, low-temperature washing, energy-efficient production, renewable fuel and many other benefits. In December 2022, Novozymes and Chr. Hansen entered into an agreement to create a leading global biosolutions partner by combining the two companies. The goal was to unleash the full potential of biosolutions and generate significant value for all stakeholders and society. The combination was completed on January 29, 2024 and Novonesis was born. The name means ‘a new beginning’ and is derived from the Greek word ‘genesis’. It reflects a new era where we’ll better our world with biology. Addressing global food challenges and mitigating climate change: How CO₂ could be an unlikely ally in future food production In a new article published by World Economic Forum, our CEO Ester Baiget and CEO Mads Krogsgaard Thomsen from the Novo Nordisk Foundation explain how biosolutions can provide the tools to turn CO₂ into nutritious protein. Last year, more than 250 million people faced severe hunger, and as populations continue to grow, the global need for protein is expected to double by 2050. At the same time, global food and agriculture sectors account for more than 1/3 of greenhouse gas emissions. With the right tools, CO₂ can be turned into a valuable and sustainable raw material in our future food production. Biosolutions can provide the key to transforming our food production and agriculture. Novozymes and the Novo Nordisk Foundation are part of an international consortium, which is co-funded by The Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. The consortium aims to use CO₂ to produce proteins for human consumption without using agricultural land. The basic idea is to produce protein via fermentation, a technique that has been used to produce food for millennia. Captured CO₂ can be converted to acetate that is used to feed microbes, which in turn produce protein. That way, we can supply nutritious food to a growing population within the boundaries of our planet while turning CO₂ into a raw material and thus contributing to mitigating climate change. This can be an important step towards a novel bioeconomy with sustainable, safe and stable food production. Our CEO Ester Baiget took part in CNBC International's panel debate in Davos yesterday. The debate focused on how embracing sustainable values can help drive long-term capital growth for businesses. "Sustainability is the only way to deliver long-term shareholder value. We have to work better together to remove unnecessary roadblocks and create a framework that allows companies to move faster towards the solutions of the future. The current regulation is based on the past, and trillions of dollars are spent subsidizing fossil-based solutions," she said. The other speakers were: Cenk Alper, CEO, Sabanci Holdings Eric Usher, Secretary-general, United Nations Environment Programme Finance Initiative Rebeca Minguela, CEO, Clarity AI Dr Ilham Kadri, CEO, Syensqo Watch the video from the debate below, and the full video is also available here: https://lnkd.in/dTQ3EucU #biosolutions #WEF24 #climateaction #rethinktomorrow

"The solutions are ready. But regulation is not ready." Our CEO Ester Baiget was interviewed live by CNBC from the World Economic Forum Annual Meeting in Davos, Switzerland, where she discussed solutions and barriers to accelerating climate action. "Biosolutions that are natural and biodegradable are still treated as though they were chemicals, and that creates unnecessary roadblocks, hindering the speed of the green transition. It takes six years in Europe to register a microbe to replace a fertilizer, while it can take two years in the U.S," she said. On the role that biosolutions can play in the green transition: "We are part of the answer of the future. Our biosolutions can transform food systems by replacing fossil-based chemicals, supporting the shift to alternative proteins, and reducing the carbon footprint of food production. In all areas, our solutions are an enabler to the green transition." She also talked about our proposed merger with Chr. Hansen, which is expected to close following regulatory approvals in Q1. In order to limit global warming to 1.5°C, we need to reduce global emissions by around 7% annually until 2030 – but they continue to increase by 1.5% today. New report by Boston Consulting Group (BCG) and World Economic Forum calls for systemic actions from companies and governments. It outlines the urgency and necessity of drastic action to combat climate change effectively and deliver on commitments. It emphasizes the need for governments to level the playing field for green solutions and proposes practical ways for companies to achieve outsized impact in their ecosystems. In the report, our collaboration with Arla Foods Ingredients on precision fermentation is mentioned as an example of companies co-investing and sharing knowledge to strengthen suppliers’ decarbonization efforts The guide urges leaders to pursue systemic actions, including decarbonizing supply chains, disrupting markets with green alternatives and encouraging industry-wide collaborations.
