May the 4th be with you! There are so many great quotes in my favorite space saga. Especially from my man Yoda. This one really has longevity: “You must unlearn what you have learned.” 💚💚 So jamming a bit from this: 👉 It’s your mind (biases, priors and mental models and what not) that determine everything you say or believe. There are as such no *facts*, only a system of beliefs and credences. And that’s cool. 👉 However… You need to continually learn and unlearn things in order to update these priors, so you can make better predictions. 👉 Because… You’re embedded in and surrounded by an overwhelming complexity. That’s a tough deal. 👉 Your brain handles this by building models of the world. Really smart. But also riddled with bias’ that are necessary to reduce all this data into smaller concepts that are practical. Great to keep in mind when dealing with new technology! After all. The force can have a strong influence on the weak minded.

🚨 Fake LinkedIn Profiles: A Growing Threat 🚨 This week, PRovoke Media broke a story about 11 fake LinkedIn profiles of people who listed a PR recruitment firm as their employers. LinkedIn removed the profiles as fakes - an action with which the business-centric social network is all too familiar. In FIR podcast 410, Shel Holtz, SCMP and I examine a compelling investigation by PRovoke Media that led us to uncover a disturbing trend: the creation of fake LinkedIn profiles on a scale that can only be described as industrial. These fraudulent profiles, often using stock photos and fabricated credentials, can mislead job seekers and tarnish the reputations of legitimate companies. So far, no other media outlets seem interested in the story. Still, Shel and I wonder about the motivation behind the profiles - fake profiles can easily be used for illicit purposes - and the amount of effort organizations will need to take to ensure profiles listing them as employers are legitimate. Journalists complain - not without good reason - that their encounters with leading business figures, including on results calls, are now overly managed, scripted, sanitised and stripped of spontaneity. Some bosses continue to provide colour (and bursts of panic form their advisors) but on the whole, the corporate reputation - personified by the reputation of the CEO - is treated like a Ming vase. This means, of course, that a deep fake video or audio clip of a business leader has the potential to be a drunkard on a unicycle in the Ming vase exhibit. “Can I REALLY hire external resources to do internal communications? Don’t you need to be inside the company to do it well?” The short answer is, YES you can. You can, and probably should. Especially if: - You’ve been advocating for a new hire and can’t seem to get approval. - Your company regularly relies on contractors and freelancers in other functions. - You have spikes in work at certain times of the year, regularly. - You can hire out for an area of expertise you don’t have in your team. - You can get a project complete by off-loading it to an expert in a specific area (even if you DO have the expertise, because your time should be spent elsewhere). Even if a contractor or freelancer is not the ideal state, it’s a good option. The company likely doesn’t want to commit to a long-term role yet, but you need relief and the company needs solid work. Whether it works or not is entirely up to you. Yes, you. Hire the right people, train them in your processes, give them access to those processes, and arm them with the right level of information to do the job well. You can hire freelancers or contractors to do internal comms. for: - Storytelling/ news writing - Executive speechwriting or ghostwriting - Graphic design - PowerPoints (did someone say town hall?) - Videography - Admin or Comms. Operations - Comms. Specialists/Experts in specific projects (DEI comms, benefits comms., sustainability comms., sales comms., IT comms.) And more. It depends on your business' need. But align it with your long-term strategy first and build the case for it in budget. Now, before you skeptics out there think I have something to gain, I don’t. I help company Comms leaders with audits, strategy, coaching and the structure and resources they might need. Then I help them advocate for them. But I don’t hire out the talented professionals to do the day-to-day work, I just help you get to the place where you can. I run a consultant practice, not an agency. So stop waiting. If you’re asking this question, you probably should’ve already hired some external resources to do the internal work. Get your Strategic plan with team structure (including external resources) and budget set, get the OK (if you don’t manage budget directly), then go ahead and hire. It's a wrap for the #GMSForum2024! Here are some personal take-aways from leading the comms for this event: ⚪ There's no such thing as a perfect program. Period. So the best strategy is to accept change even (and especially) at the last minute - absent speakers, new announcements, typos and glitches. Some things you will only ever see when you're physically in the venue so do tech rehearsals a day before if possible. 🟣 Don't forget your key messages. A lot can be lost in the sheer magnitude of the things you have to do - from blurbs, scripts, and slides, to videos, reels, and posts. Start with your key message then build your content around it. Branding follows. ⚪ Comms is shared work. We need editors - extra eyes and ears who can give us fresh perspectives and help refine our work. We are all building on each other's artistry. 🟣 Trust your team and ask for help when needed. We all want the same thing - to organize a successful forum for our participants. We have to take care of our team and the teams supporting us across language barriers. ⚪ Comms work never (seems to) end. I know there's still a lot to do but it's good to pause and celebrate the wins. The media plays a crucial role in shaping public opinion, providing information, and holding power to account. The perception that the media is biased has become a widespread sentiment across the political spectrum. Media bias refers to the perceived or real tendency of journalists and news organizations to present information in a way that reflects a particular viewpoint or agenda. It can be manifested in various forms, including the selection of news stories, the framing of issues, and the language used. Bias does not always mean that the information is false; rather, it indicates that the presentation of the information is skewed in a particular direction. Accusations of bias are often directed at specific outlets, with conservatives frequently targeting mainstream media like CNN and The New York Times, while liberals point to Fox News and other right-leaning outlets. Several factors contribute to the perception of media bias in the U.S: 1.) Media ownership is concentrated among a few large corporations, which can influence the content produced. 2.) The rise of cable news networks and digital platforms has led to the creation of partisan echo chambers, where audiences consume news that reinforces their existing beliefs. 3.) The decline of traditional print media and the rise of digital platforms have created economic pressures that can influence editorial decisions. 4.) Journalists often face challenges in maintaining objectivity, especially when covering complex or polarizing issues. According to a 2021 Gallup poll, only 36% of Americans expressed a "great deal" or "fair amount" of trust in the media to report the news fully, accurately, and fairly. When people lose trust in the media, they are more likely to seek out alternative sources of information, which can include social media platforms, blogs, and partisan outlets. While these sources can provide valuable perspectives, they are often less rigorous in their fact-checking and editorial standards, which can lead to the spread of misinformation and disinformation. Navigate the media landscape to find reliable information— 1.) Enhancing media literacy is crucial in helping individuals critically evaluate the news they consume. 2.) Consuming news from a variety of sources with different perspectives can provide a more balanced view of events. 3.) Supporting independent, non-profit journalism and subscribing to trusted news organizations can help ensure that quality reporting continues in an environment increasingly driven by economic pressures. In a time when trust in the media is low, and the spread of misinformation is high, the role of the press remains vital. It is up to both journalists and the public to work towards a media environment that is fair, balanced, and serves the interests of democracy.

Some interesting findings from this report on who is paying for online news content, which publications they pay for, and their motivations for subscribing to news: - 📊 Less than 1/5 of people across 20 countries currently pay for online news. - 📺 Consumers compare news subscriptions with TV streaming and other services. - 🎟️ Entertainment subscriptions are seen as offering more emotional benefits than news. - 📰 Potential subscribers look for exclusive, curated content not available for free. - 💬 Some feel worse off without a subscription due to a lack of depth in free news. - 🔍 Interest in news and politics is a key motivator for paying subscribers. - 💸 The cost-of-living crisis has led to many renegotiating or canceling subscriptions. - 🌟 Solutions include all-access bundles, lower-priced options, and flexible pricing strategies.
