💡 "His [PD Dr. Gerhard Schmalz / Outpatient Clinic for Dental Conservation and Periodontology, University of Leipzig] conclusion: Lumoral is a possibility for the prevention of mucositis that requires further evaluation for the homecare setting, particularly with regard to the question of what effect the heat development has on the implant in the long term. In the case of existing implants, he sees a corresponding prevention potential in the prevention of mucositis. It was an absolute pleasure to participate and talk at the ECDMFR Congress in Freiburg 2024, bringing some insight into the possibilities using MRI in a dental clinical setup (#ddMRI) to visualize inflammation and tissue alterations in the apical area of teeth. As dentists we tend to rely on images showing us a crime scene 'post-factum'. We're great at deduction and use it to lead us to a clear picture of what has occurred in our patients. But playing Sherlock Holmes is tough, and sometimes a little CCTV help could help us in getting a clearer view of what's going on in the jawbone and soft tissues - even while it is happening! ddMRI presents as an imaging modality comparable to CBCT in depicting apical periodontitis in our small pilot study - but what does the future hold? What doors could this unlock for us? This is what intrigues me: Can this modality help us rethink how we diagnose and monitor this and other illnesses? Can we individualize on a whole new level how we approach this kind of patient? Will this make us rethink how we approach and treat certain illnesses and states - not only apical periodontitis? #ARVO2024 Update 29: Regional differences in optical coherence tomography (OCT) optic nerve head and macula parameters for detecting glaucoma in eyes with and without high axial myopia. Jasmin Rezapour and co-authors from Ophthalmology, Universitatsmedizin der Johannes Gutenberg-Universitat Mainz, Germany. Glaucoma in high myopes can be difficult to diagnose due to the myopic optic nerve changes that have occured. The authors compared glaucomatous to healthy eyes, dividing the groups into no myopia, mild myopia (24-26mm axial length) and high myopia (axial length >26mm). They found that diagnostic accuracy for high myopes was higher using global and infero-temporal peripapillary retinal nerve fibre layer (RNFL) metrics whilst for non-myopes and low myopes it was using Bruch’s membrane opening minimum rim width. Sectoral macular ganglion cell inner plexiform layer was also more accurate than macular RNFL thickness for high myopes. It's fascinating to see the ability of the Aorta to remodel even after having had expanded to a monster sized abdominal aneurysm. Surely, there're many factors affecting such ability, which aren't fully known yet. Nevertheless the right choice of the Stentgraft and the correct oversizing are definitely some of these factors.
