Tale of Two Barrier Islands: Climate Change Management Challenges and Opportunities in Miami Beach FL and Shishmaref AK
Springer Handbook on Climate Change Management
The two case studies presented in this chapter illustrate a wide range of climate change management challenges and opportunities. The two do share the same likelihood of being overcome by sea-level rise later in this century. From an analysis of these cases, conclusions are drawn about: the planning horizon for barrier islands; the importance of citizen participation in planning; costs; distributive issues, including those related to indigenous communities; and the appropriate roles of regional…

Adaptation to climate change in small coastal cities: The influence of development status on adaptation response
Ocean & Coastal Management
In contrast to coastal towns and small urban settlements, small coastal cities (population of between 50,000 and 100,000) may exhibit comparable knowledge and planning infrastructure as larger cities or be similarly connected to research institutions. However, at a global level, there is little statistical data about small cities, and their numbers and locations are thus so far unknown.

In this paper, five cases of small coastal cities, two of which are located in the USA - Miami Beach and Milford - and three, in Australia (Mandurah), Bangladesh (Sundarbans), and South Africa (Knysna) respectively, are presented and discussed in view of adaptation to climate change. -
Adaptation to climate change in small island settlements
Ocean & Coastal Management 212, 105789
Six island settlement case studies are used from around the world: Cocos Islands (Australian territory); Shishmaref, USA; Broad Channel, USA; Samsø, Denmark; Ciutadella de Menorca, Spain; and Port Vila, Vanuatu. This article describes and assesses impacts, adaptations, and capacity within each of the six case studies, and outlines the relationship of the Sustainable Development Goals system to small coastal settlements in general.
