Do we miss something when we talk about #CircularEconomy? The role of workers in the circular economy, particularly informal ones, is often overlooked. A partnership between Ashoka #IKEASocialEntrepreneurship, the UNDP Accelerator Labs with support from Circle Economy, contributed to bridging this gap by convening learning circles that explored the narratives at the intersection of the circular economy and the informal economy. It highlighted the roles of various stakeholders, particularly #socialentrepreneurs. 🔎 What are the key findings?  The discussions highlighted four key dilemmas at the intersection of circularity and informality and raised five critical questions for stakeholders to consider in order to deepen their understanding of this complex area. -The Core Carbon Principles released by the Integrity Council for the Voluntary Carbon Market (ICVCM) are currently recognized by the market as the most rigorous carbon credit auditing rules. -If the top 4 global carbon credit programs (ACR, CAR, GS, VCS) can all comply with the CCP, the voluntary carbon credit market seems to have reached a pooling equilibrium. -However, if VCS fails (as it accounts for around 70% of the market share), there will likely be significant discussion in the market (Greenwashing?!) -From my option, corporations should pay more attention in carbon methodologies released in the second half of the year. If controversial methodologies like REDD and REDD+ can meet these rules, then businesses will have a good reason for investing in and purchasing such carbon credits. #carbon credits #CCP # VCS

There's been a lot of discussion in the CDR industry recently about ton-denominated carbon credits for open-system durable carbon removal. How does this pathway: - 📈 scale, - 💰 leverage available funding, - 🔐 unlock new financing mechanisms, and - 🌎 deliver real climate impact? There are 3 arguments/themes I hear a lot, all of which have strengths and weaknesses: 1️⃣ We need stricter standards for attribution of individual tons of removal to specific actions taken by specific actors, generating highly verifiable credits for compensatory claims. Only the most rigorous stuff is acceptable, driving a "race to the top." 2️⃣ We need to lean into the uncertainty, fund things that are directionally correct, and generate tradable credits (still representing a ton of CO2) using conservative discounts. This enables learning-by-doing, reduces scientific uncertainty over time, and taps into billions of dollars in voluntary carbon market funding. 3️⃣ We need something entirely different, beyond ton-based crediting. There's limited evidence in academic meta-reviews that voluntary carbon markets for reduction and avoidance credits have generated climate benefits. There must be alternatives. But we aren't the first ones to go down this road. A lot of these dynamics and trade-offs -- funding constraints, geopolitics, complex MRV needs, environmental/ecological considerations, market infrastructure, local decision-making, equity and justice -- have played out over decades in forestry credit markets and, to a more limited extent, in soil carbon markets. This recent report on 🌲 International Forests Governance 🌲 provides a good summary of important trends and developments in the international forest regime since 2010. https://lnkd.in/grp3dR3K One key takeaway that I think is relevant to CDR: Increasing complexity 😵‍💫 (in MRV, standards, institutions) - can be helpful for double- and triple-checking ✅ on carbon projects, - but it can also tilt the balance of power ⚖️ - towards actors seeking short-term returns 💸 - at the expense of local decision-makers 🧑‍🧑‍🧒‍🧒 - and long-term environmental sustainability 🌱. Lots to unpack there. Here is something interesting - Partnership for Carbon Accounting Financials (PCAF) has launched a public consultation on its newly developed guidance and methods, which include guidance for measuring avoided emissions also popular as Scope 4 emissions. Why is that important? Because avoided emissions are still a grey area and we should quickly come up with robust frameworks for reporting of Scope 4/avoided emissions (I don't say estimating because IPMPV and other standards have provided solid methodologies for estimation). Here are some definitions from the PCAF documents: Avoided emissions are the reduction in systemic emissions resulting from a project, product, or service compared to a counterfactual scenario, or put simply, emissions reductions that would not occur should the project, product, or service in question not exist Differences between Scope 3 reductions and avoided emissions: • Scope 3 emissions accounting takes a company’s point of view. In particular, emissions reductions of products are seen as changes in several scope 3 categories, which together reflect the life cycle emission of sold products. Further, scope 3 emissions are only compared to the same company’s scope 3 emissions from previous years, whereas avoided emissions are compared to the most likely alternative that would have occurred without the solution, which could be a product from another company or a completely different solution altogether. • Avoided emissions accounting is built from a societal context and the use of the solutions’ point of view, where two situations are compared: one with the solution sold by the company, the other with the most likely scenario that would have occurred without the solution. Avoided emissions give an estimated emissions reduction in society due to the use of the solution but outside the solution provider’s scope 1-3 emissions. #scope4 #carbon #RumenPresents

Brace yourselves for a reality check! The latest analysis of net-zero pledges by 51 major companies is in, and the results are sobering. Despite some ambitious targets, they fall short of the Paris Agreement goals. ⬇ 🔍 Insufficient Targets: The companies aim for a median cut of about 30% by 2030, but this falls short of the necessary 43% reduction to keep global temperature increases below 1.5°C by 2050. 💼 Corporate Integrity Scrutinized: None of the companies' claims were ranked as having "high" integrity. The Corporate Climate Responsibility Monitor highlights the importance of integrity in corporate climate claims. 🛑 Beware of False Solutions: The report warns against reliance on "creative carbon accounting" and dubious solutions like carbon removals, standalone renewable energy certificates, and bioenergy, which may not effectively reduce emissions and could have negative impacts. Here's a breakdown of the process: Step 1: Commit to Setting Science-Based Targets * Declare your intent: Submit a commitment letter to SBTi, formally expressing your organization's intention to set science-based targets. * Public announcement: Consider making a public announcement about your commitment to boost credibility and engage stakeholders. Step 2: Develop Science-Based Targets * Assess your emissions: Calculate your current greenhouse gas emissions (Scopes 1, 2, and 3). * Set ambitious goals: Develop emissions reduction targets aligned with the SBTi's criteria and consistent with the Paris Agreement's goal of limiting global warming to 1.5°C. * Utilize SBTi resources: Leverage the SBTi's tools and guidance to ensure your targets meet the required standards. This should come as no surprise to economists: a meta-analysis of studies analyzing the effect of carbon pricing found that pricing resulted in immediate and sustained emissions reductions. The study (open access here: https://lnkd.in/g-5Gtyey) found emissions reductions of between 5% and 21%, across 80 assessments of carbon tax or cap-and-trade schemes. I'd guess many (or maybe most or even all?) economists would see pricing mechanisms as a important tool for reducing emissions, so this paper provides strong empirical support for that view.

This is good news for the circular economy and provides continued support for the existing Circular Economy Action Plan.
