With eight billion people on the planet and dramatically rising geopolitical, social, environmental, and climate challenges supply chains need to be agile and resilient to keep functioning. We need breakthrough approaches and solutions to work ourselves out of the current complexities. In this BVL blog post, I focus on three fields which I consider to be critical for achieving such breakthroughs. First, human-machine hybrid solutions, as the combination of the two creates a whole that is greater than the sum of their parts. Second, the need for more sustainable practices and products, e.g., a circular economy because we are increasingly forced to slow down the deterioration of our planet which is currently the only habitat of our species. Third, collaboration, as I believe that we are very good in competing but that coopetition, i.e., the collaboration between (competing) businesses is a recipe for creating economic and societal capital in a more balanced way. Technology-enhanced human capabilities, crircular economy, and coopetition will be transformative forces across supply chain networks. #logistics #supplychains #coopetition #sustainability #humanmachinehybrids

Listening carefully to understand tomorrow today—that’s what the stories in the new DACHSER magazine entitled "Global Groupage" are all about. The cover story highlights future economic development scenarios, the resulting needs of our customers, and what DACHSER is doing to meet them—summarized under the keyword Global Groupage: an optimal integration of global end-to-end groupage transports and contract logistics solutions. In the interview, COO Air & Sea Logistics Dr. Tobias Burger provides an update on current and future developments in air and sea freight. These and many more stories can be found in the current issue: https://lnkd.in/ecNPyFpd #DACHSER #globalgroupage #airfreight #seafreight

Miebach Consulting/DVZ Logistics Outsourcing Study 2023 Part 10: Outsourcing grows ever more slowly - now also abroad A significant reduction in the positive prevailing mood can be seen among both German shippers and service providers. The trend from 1998 to 2014, with a continuous decrease in the proportion of those who predicted an increasing logistics outsourcing trend (1998: 66%, 2014: 53%), seemed to be broken in 2017, when an increasing value of 62% could be noted again. This short-term recovery could not be confirmed in 2020: The rate of those expecting a further increase in logistics outsourcing fell to 48%, and thus below the 50% mark for the first time. In the current study, this figure is now 49% and thus still below the 50% mark. This development can be seen both among service providers and shippers. In the other regions considered here, the mood continues to cool. Among shippers in LATAM, the rate of those expecting further growth falls from 71% to 64%, and in the rest of Europe from 77% to 60%. The corresponding rates among service providers are 80% in LATAM and 50% in the rest of Europe. With this short article our series regarding the 2023 Logistics Outsourcing Study ends. We hope you did enjoy and stay curious for the next logistics discussions! Outlook: We will conduct a European Chemical Logistics Study during the next months and start presenting the results here in Linkedin most probably in Q4/2024.

Last year, significantly less cargo was transported in #Switzerland, both via rail and road and both on a domestic and international level. When it comes to rail freight, international services (import, export and transit) dropped by 8 per cent, while domestic services decreased by 5.7 per cent compared to 2022. #railfreight #railfreightnews #railcargonews

Cutting road journeys by 90 percent: That’s the power of supply chain optimization. Transporting goods from A to B in the most efficient way can be a tremendously complex task. And reducing complexity is daily business for our DACHSER supply chain experts. The key is to optimize routes to save time, money, and carbon emissions while also maximizing customer satisfaction. One of our customers, a major home improvement retailer, recently asked us to evaluate their distribution setup and identify any potential for optimization. Our experts took stock of the status quo and came up with a completely revamped business-to-consumer concept, which we first implemented for that customer in Luxembourg as a test area. Using supply chain optimization and advanced georouting, we managed to implement a system that matches incoming orders with the short-distance delivery areas of our DACHSER branches as well as the stores of our customer. This way, we can ensure that the same local DACHSER branch always handles both collection (from a store) and delivery (to the end customer). The result is a win-win: - The average distance traveled when delivering to private customers can be reduced by as much as 90 percent. - Transportation costs, and hence also carbon emissions, have been reduced considerably. - Orders arrive quicker and with a much lower risk of damage, as goods handling is greatly reduced. To me, that’s what supply chain optimization is all about: questioning existing structures and breaking new ground. The results are compelling, and they prove that customer satisfaction, efficiency in logistics, and emission savings can go hand in hand. #IntelligentLogistics #supplychain #georouting #sustainability

Optimistic mood among Bremen's freight forwarders After a challenging year in 2023, Bremen's freight forwarders are once again looking to the future with hope. According to a survey by the Bremer Spediteure e.V. association, 62% of members expect satisfactory results for 2024 - even though a further decline in cargo volumes and shipments is expected in both sea freight imports and exports. The reason for the nevertheless positive sentiment is the increased freight rates due to the Middle East crisis and the Red Sea bypass. Last year, companies had to report a sharp drop in turnover with an average fall of 8 percent. A look at freight rates is currently leading to additional orders and extra work in our industry - but in the long term, there is unlikely to be any planning certainty with regard to transport volumes. So we must continue to react flexibly to market developments. And, of course, be happy about the current positive sentiment! #Logistics #Seafreight #Freightforwarding #Optimism #Bremen #MGC

On December 19, 🇩🇪 Deutsche Bahn AG announced the official start of the sale process for its subsidiary DB Schenker. The sale will proceed only if the transaction provides clear economic benefits for Deutsche Bahn. The company is conducting an "open and non-discriminatory" process, inviting potential buyers to submit expressions of interest to its advisors, Goldman Sachs and Morgan Stanley, by noon on January 15, 2024. Selected bidders will be chosen in the following weeks. Although DB Schenker holds a solid position in markets with strong growth prospects, Deutsche Bahn believes the logistics provider requires more capital and flexibility to fuel its own growth. Proceeds from the sale will be used to reduce Deutsche Bahn's €30 billion debt, allowing the company to refocus on its core rail business to achieve its climate goals 🌍. DB Schenker, with around 76,600 employees in over 130 countries, is a leader in land, air, and sea freight as well as specialized logistics solutions. Its EBIT could reach €1 billion this year, a decrease from €1.8 billion during the industry boom in 2022. #LogisticsIndustry #DeutscheBahn 🚆 #DBSchenker #Transportation #Sustainability ♻️

Congrats, Cologne! The transition to more sustainable logistics is a top priority for us at DACHSER. This is why we’re delighted that Cologne has just become one of many cities in Europe where we’re introducing DACHSER Emission-Free Delivery. What’s behind it? Reducing carbon emissions and noise in city centers is a major step toward making cities more livable—and DACHSER is proud to be playing its part: A defined area in the city center of Cologne will be exclusively served by two fully electric trucks with a gross vehicle weight of 7.49 metric tons. A smaller electric transporter will be used for deliveries in the narrow streets of Cologne’s famous “Altstadt.” All three vehicles will be charged with green electricity at our local branch. We’ve been using battery-electric trucks since 2018, and we’re expanding our fleet of vehicles with alternative drive systems in both the short- and long-haul sectors. DACHSER currently has more than 90 zero-emission trucks on the roads across Europe. We’ve set ourselves ambitious targets: by the end of 2025, we want to establish DACHSER Emission-Free Delivery zones for non-refrigerated groupage consignments in at least 24 European cities. Berlin, Hamburg, Paris, Madrid, Vienna, Stockholm and many other cities are already on board—and we’re thrilled that Cologne has joined them. DACHSER Emission-Free Delivery is a real success story and demonstrates our commitment to be an impulse generator for climate action in the logistics industry: not only do our customers embrace this concept, but it also motivates our local teams—especially the drivers, who appreciate the extra flexibility that easy-to-use and silent electric trucks offer them in city centers. This is how sustainable transformation succeeds—when it combines practical benefits and technological progress in a meaningful way. #Logistics #FutureLogistics #Sustainability #EmissionFree

MSC's acquisition of Gram Car Carriers makes sense for a number of reasons, MSI's Niklas Carlen tells DVZ Deutsche Verkehrs-Zeitung. "The car carrier market is very similar to the container industry from both an operational and commercial perspective, and the acquisition of Gram gives MSC a springboard into the car carrier market, which has traditionally been a difficult market to break into," says Carlen. Tailwind Intermodal: new rail operator on the Koper-Graz route 🚆 On September 3, Tailwind Intermodal’s Panther Shuttle arrived in Graz, Austria. This marks Tailwind Intermodal’s debut on the Koper (Slovenia) – Graz (Austria) route. The Panther Shuttle offers freight forwarders and shipping companies five direct connections per week in each direction. “Thanks to its geographical location between the Adriatic and the Baltic, the Graz freight terminal, in conjunction with the port of Koper, forms an ideal connection to Eastern and Southeastern Europe. With the direct train connection between these strategically ideally located freight centers, we are establishing ourselves as an intermodal service provider for everyone who has containers transported between the Mediterranean and Eastern and Southeastern Europe,” explains Christian Steindl, Vice President of Tailwind Intermodal. As a sister company of TAILWIND Shipping Lines, which calls at the Adriatic port of Koper, Tailwind Intermodal is also responsible for container onward carriage to the hinterland and the return to Koper. Together the both companies enhance supply chains between China and Europa by combining sea freight and on-land freight. Tailwind Intermodal has big plans for the future; “For the course of the coming year, we plan to increase the frequency between Graz and Koper,” says Christian Steindl. #LidlInternational #TailwindIntermodal #SupplyChain #teamlidl

Do you remember what you did on October 23, 35 years ago? I do! It was my very first working day with UPS. Started part time in a center in the South of Germany, just to earn some money before Christmas. And as for many other UPSers, it turned into a professional career. Coming from a small village in Germany, close to the French border, I would have never believed what opportunities were offered to me and my family. And one element that made this company great is the promotion from within policy. As our founder Jim Casey said in 1945: ‘We are trying to build people. There are opportunities ahead for those who are made of good stuff.’ I clearly benefited from people trusting in my capabilities, developing me for greater responsibilities and then also providing me the opportunity to assume new roles. This finally let to seventeen different positions, nine relocations, and living and working in four different countries – initially Germany but also over 20 years in Paris, France, London UK, and three times in Brussels, Belgium. In addition, I had special assignments in the US and in multiple global projects. My current and previous positions really took me around the world experiencing cultural differences and communalities on all continents. And what I also found, no matter where I went, were outstanding UPSers – open, trusting, welcoming. Fantastic partners and many of them I now call friends. I could not be more grateful for the many wonderful people I met along the way and these memories are long-lasting. What else kept me for 35 years with this company? First, the alignment of my personal values without company values. Trust, openness, teamwork, partnership, community involvement, sustainability, and inclusion, to mention the most important ones. If you find that perfect match, no need to look any further. And in addition, the company allowed me to develop and create the roles I have been assigned to. This included the freedom to innovate processes, technology, and ways of working. Some of them made it to being a UPS global standard and provided me with some HR awards 😊. On a personal level, working globally and living outside my home country opened my eyes to the cultural differences and taught me how to maneuver in an international business environment. A life changing experience. My 30+ married wife Rita and I saw our two boys growing up in an international environment, being tri-lingual and now doing very well personally and professionally. In closing, I can only echo our founder again, who stated: ‘Our company has grown because our people have grown, and our people have grown because our company has grown. And so it will be in the future…’ I am convinced that the best is yet to come.
