With eight billion people on the planet and dramatically rising geopolitical, social, environmental, and climate challenges supply chains need to be agile and resilient to keep functioning. We need breakthrough approaches and solutions to work ourselves out of the current complexities. In this BVL blog post, I focus on three fields which I consider to be critical for achieving such breakthroughs. First, human-machine hybrid solutions, as the combination of the two creates a whole that is greater than the sum of their parts. Second, the need for more sustainable practices and products, e.g., a circular economy because we are increasingly forced to slow down the deterioration of our planet which is currently the only habitat of our species. Third, collaboration, as I believe that we are very good in competing but that coopetition, i.e., the collaboration between (competing) businesses is a recipe for creating economic and societal capital in a more balanced way. On December 19, 🇩🇪 Deutsche Bahn AG announced the official start of the sale process for its subsidiary DB Schenker. The sale will proceed only if the transaction provides clear economic benefits for Deutsche Bahn. The company is conducting an "open and non-discriminatory" process, inviting potential buyers to submit expressions of interest to its advisors, Goldman Sachs and Morgan Stanley, by noon on January 15, 2024. Selected bidders will be chosen in the following weeks. Although DB Schenker holds a solid position in markets with strong growth prospects, Deutsche Bahn believes the logistics provider requires more capital and flexibility to fuel its own growth. Proceeds from the sale will be used to reduce Deutsche Bahn's €30 billion debt, allowing the company to refocus on its core rail business to achieve its climate goals 🌍. DB Schenker, with around 76,600 employees in over 130 countries, is a leader in land, air, and sea freight as well as specialized logistics solutions. Miebach Consulting/DVZ Logistics Outsourcing Study 2023   Part 10: Outsourcing grows ever more slowly - now also abroad   A significant reduction in the positive prevailing mood can be seen among both German shippers and service providers. The trend from 1998 to 2014, with a continuous decrease in the proportion of those who predicted an increasing logistics outsourcing trend (1998: 66%, 2014: 53%), seemed to be broken in 2017, when an increasing value of 62% could be noted again. This short-term recovery could not be confirmed in 2020: The rate of those expecting a further increase in logistics outsourcing fell to 48%, and thus below the 50% mark for the first time. In the current study, this figure is now 49% and thus still below the 50% mark. This development can be seen both among service providers and shippers. In the other regions considered here, the mood continues to cool. Among shippers in LATAM, the rate of those expecting further growth falls from 71% to 64%, and in the rest of Europe from 77% to 60%. The corresponding rates among service providers are 80% in LATAM and 50% in the rest of Europe.   With this short article our series regarding the 2023 Logistics Outsourcing Study ends. High expectations but no willingness to invest - that doesn't go together, does it?   This is how the German Freight Forwarding and Logistics Association DSLV feels about the planned cuts in the federal transport budget for 2025 and, together with 21 other business and transport associations, has published an appeal to the government against the planned austerity measures. According to the association, the claim that Germany is a sustainable business location is in stark contrast to reality.   There are a number of problems, such as damaged roads and bridges, infrastructural gaps and the need for digitalisation. Without sufficient funding and remedying these problems, Germany could become an unattractive location for industry and trade or, in the worst case, no longer fulfil the requirements of the trans-European transport networks.   The latest reports from the Federal Highway Research Institute BASt support these concerns: according to these studies, 2000 trunk road bridges, 1000 railway bridges and around 25% of lock facilities are in an inadequate condition.   The call to the government: take responsibility, stop delaying problems and close investment gaps as quickly as possible.   #transport budget #infrastructure #federal budget #business location #digitalisation #MGC

𝗧𝗵𝗲𝗿𝗲'𝘀 𝗻𝗼 𝘀𝗵𝗼𝗿𝘁𝗮𝗴𝗲 𝗼𝗳 𝘁𝗮𝗹𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗮𝘁 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗺𝗼𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁.   Kuehne + Nagel: Earlier on this year, Kuehne + Nagel announced an organisational restructure with the discontinuation of the regional management levels.   DB Schenker: Although this seems like it has been ongoing for a lifetime, we are getting the final stages of the selling of the German giants Deutsche Bahn and we can expect this to be a done deal by the end of the year.   Bollore: CEVA will soon begin the process of welcoming Bolloré Logistics into its new product-driven organizational model. Bolloré Logistics was acquired by the CMA CGM Group on Feb. 29, 2024. CEVA Logistics and Bolloré Logistics will move forward under one unified brand—CEVA Logistics. The company expects to complete its rebranding process by the end of 2024.   Three of the largest companies in the industry all undergoing significant transitions within a year. This news naturally creates market uncertainty and forces professionals out of their current roles for reasons beyond their control.   For companies looking to hire, there is no better time than now, as the market is filled with highly experienced and talented individuals. When your boss speaks plainly... ...he speaks from the soul of over 34,000 DACHSER employees. "Complaining is also a cultural asset here in Germany" is the headline of the Handelsblatt interview with Dachser CEO Burkhard Eling. Want an example from history backing up the headline? The German Renewable Energies Act was passed in 1998. In all the years since, the #energy industry has spent more resources fighting the regulation rather than seizing the opportunities it presented. The result of these years of delaying tactics is that today we are all complaining about and suffering from high energy prices (as I know from my own gas bill). Taking action instead of spending all your energy complaining. It's precisely this attitude that I've learned to appreciate in the #culture of a family-owned business like Dachser. Finally, there are plenty of reasons to be positive about the future of #Germany and the #energytransition. If we look at the substance of the German #economy - especially the strong sector of small and medium-sized enterprises - we have every reason to roll up our sleeves and seize the economic opportunities that the energy transition still brings with it. Here is another example: According to a latest study of Boston Consulting Group (BCG) technologies that can remove carbon dioxide from the atmosphere alone could generate a market of almost one trillion euros a year. 👉 The most digitalized logistics provider in the world. That is DACHSER's goal. But what does that actually mean? Wanting to be "the most digitalized"? Can this be measured in figures? Or in technologies and processes? The recent visit by Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung editor Henning Peitsmeier to our site in Munich-Unterschleißheim helped me to turn one or two question marks into exclamation marks. During the visit, he took a close look at what we in #logistics call a #digital twin.   In the end, it's a little bit of everything. With @ILO ("Advanced Indoor Localization and Operations“) we are able to map the processes and flows of goods in our warehouses with the utmost precision. Supported by #artificialintelligence the technology allows us to improve efficiency in our transit terminals by 30%, for example by handling goods much faster. This is a real #gamechanger, especially in groupage logistics, where we at Dachser alone ship over 80 million consignments every year.   I would also like to take this opportunity to thank my colleague Dominik Schnatterer for all his insights he shared with us. His answers have also shed some light on things for me. Last year, significantly less cargo was transported in #Switzerland, both via rail and road and both on a domestic and international level.
