Earlier this week, our own Harald (Harry) Kroeger spoke with Handelsblatt about our new collaboration with high-tech laser systems expert TRUMPF, which is great validation for SiMa.ai’s differentiated complete ML system-on-chip. “Laser specialist Trumpf is the first German company to enter into a strategic partnership with the Silicon Valley start-up,” writes Martin-W. Buchenau of Handelsblatt. “Together, the two companies are developing AI software that improves laser applications…the (SiMa.ai) chip enables 5,000 images per second to be processed and evaluated during camera monitoring of a laser application. Such real-time testing can replace separate and complex testing procedures in electric car production. It seems almost impossible for a European Company to compete with a US Company in a high tech sector. Not only is private sector investment capital much more available in the US than is the case in Europe (or UK), it is also the case that Government attitudes to assistance are radically different. In eVTOL, through Defence Departments and through local government trade / industry bodies, there are numerous routes to state aid being exercised in the US - e.g. by Joby, Archer, Beta - while here in Europe, private sector investment funds are much more limited and any form of state assistance seems to be almost impossible. Unless we can find a better way to compete with US companies in areas where Europe has real talent, we will simply find our talent and its benefits drifting towards increasing US profitability.

We are offering an exciting topic for a master's thesis at our office in #Aachen.   In the #DLR Project “Kennwertdatenbank und optimierte Produktionstechnik für Kleinflugzeuge” (KoPf), we aim to accelerate material testing using machine learning models by identifying patterns and relationships from the material testing, which can lead to the development of a composite structure with a target structural performance. This goal can be achieved through the reshaping of the testing pyramid (i.e. building block approach) to correlate the behaviour at larger scaled structures to a small number of fundamental material properties by analysing data on existing materials.   The primary objective of your thesis is to investigate data augmentation techniques to generate synthetic timeseries data and evaluate their similarity to experimental data. This study will examine the capabilities of different generative models (e.g. Generative Adversarial Networks) to create synthetic data that accurately reflect real material and structure behaviours. In the fifth part of our series on the freedom of science, we ask professor Christian Brecher, Chair of Machine Tools at the Werkzeugmaschinenlabor WZL der RWTH Aachen at RWTH Aachen University and Director of the Fraunhofer-Institut für Produktionstechnologie IPT… ❓… how does Production Technology enhance freedom and autonomy? ➡ Continuous improvements in production efficiency drive economic growth and prosperity. From 15th-century letterpress printing to modern chip manufacturing, advancements in production technology have enabled disruptive innovations. Today, developments in this field significantly enhance personal autonomy and agency by simplifying work processes and promoting sustainability. Simplifying work, such as through collaborative robotics, not only addresses physical tasks but also provides mental relief. In addition, production technology plays a crucial role in ecological sustainability by emphasizing resource efficiency and reusing existing products. This shift positions production technology as a critical driver of a thriving and evolving circular economy for the future. ❓ What is the direct positive impact on our daily lives? ➡ For those working in production, these simplifications translate into noticeable reductions in stress and fatigue during their daily tasks. The contribution of production technology to a value-adding circular economy, an economic system aimed at minimizing waste and making the most of resources, will become increasingly evident through a greater variety of recycled products available in everyday life, offered at lower prices with a significantly improved ecological footprint compared to new products. The introduction of digital product passports will further transform this landscape by providing standardized digital access to individual process steps and facilitating repairs or upgrades with readily available spare parts. Ultimately, we all stand to benefit indirectly when both the environment and economy thrive – an impact that will be felt in our daily lives. ❓ Are there risks associated with this key technology? ➡ While there is no inherent danger posed by production technology itself, risks can arise from new tools developed within it – particularly regarding data management, especially personal data. Primary concerns include cybersecurity challenges that are becoming increasingly relevant alongside artificial intelligence and extensive networks utilized in production settings. Additionally, we need to examine the potential negative impacts that supplementary systems could have on individuals, such as inadequate knowledge management.
