Continental evaluates spin-off of automotive division 🚗 On August 5, 2024, Continental AG announced it is considering spinning off its Automotive group sector into a standalone company. This move comes after a strategic review by the Executive Board to explore how best to position Continental's business units for long-term success in response to the rapidly evolving automotive industry. The Executive Board will conduct a thorough evaluation of the potential spin-off, with a decision anticipated in the fourth quarter of 2024. If approved by both the Executive and Supervisory Boards, the proposal will be presented at the 2025 Annual Shareholders' Meeting, with the spin-off potentially completed by the end of 2025. Preparations for this possible separation are already in progress. The Automotive division, which generated approximately €20.3 billion in sales last fiscal year and employs around 100,000 people, would operate as an independent company under this plan. This division, consolidated into a single legal entity since 2022, focuses on developing brake systems, sensor solutions, displays, and software for autonomous vehicles. The German market for battery electric vehicles (BEV) is facing a significant shift in 2024. New registrations have dropped by 32%, totaling 241,911 from January to August, with a BEV share of just 12.7%. This shift has affected several major players in the automotive industry: @VolkswagenGroup experienced a 24.1% drop in BEV registrations, with @Volkswagen (-31.7%) and @Audi (-24.6%) taking the biggest hit. However, @Skoda stood out with a modest increase of 1.4%. @BMWGroup has been a bright spot, with a 24.3% increase in BEV registrations and a BEV share of 17%, the highest among German brands. - @MercedesBenzGroup also saw a decline of 32.6%, though it maintained a BEV share of 15%, which remains above the market average. - @Stellantis recorded the largest drop at 64%, reducing its BEV share to only 7%. Chinese brands show mixed results: @BYD declined by 40%, while @Volvo (+68.8%) and @MG_Roewe (+6.7%) achieved notable growth, leading the Chinese market presence in Germany. 2026, I stand by my estimate, will be the year of the solid state battery in production.   Over 400Wh/kg, 40% lower manufacturing costs, higher safety should be presented. I think service life and robust manufacturing processes are still difficult steps, especially with solid electrolytes.    At least SAIC is now committing itself and underpinning my assessment. Other manufacturers have also written a lot about this in recent months and with the intermediate steps of the semi-solid-state battery, SSSB has ambitions to use them this year (Nio and also SAIC)   However, my assumption is supported much more by the consortium called China All-Solid-State Battery Collaborative Innovation Platform (CASIP). This is an alliance of major Chinese battery manufacturers, tech companies and car manufacturers (e.g. CATL, CALB, EVE Energy, SVOLT, Gotion High-Tech, BYD battery subsidiary FinDreams, BYD and Nio) with the aim of developing and producing competitive solid-state batteries and establishing supply chains. A small step for our automation experts, but a big step towards time-efficient test execution. Electrical tests, such as those according to ISO-21498-2, have been part of our daily business in our Stollberg testing center for years. The most challenging test in this series is the applied voltage ripple (Present voltage ripple/Immunity to voltage ripple/ Resistance to Ripple on High Voltage Network) - for years a special key topic for us. For this, we use specially developed hardware from a partner, which has clear advantages over other systems available on the market. Since this test has so far been associated with enormous application effort, our colleague Dr. Thomas Emmrich is currently working on simplifying the test procedure. For this, we are integrating frequency-selective voltage regulation into our #IAV-own test stand automation #AFRAM. Today we have reached an important milestone - the system works flawlessly and fully integrated in our small voltage ripple rack (up to 120App) - an extension of the IAV #AUROS. Now that we can conduct the tests in the IAV #AUROS with almost no application effort, the last step for us starts - the integration including release tests in our large voltage ripple rack, with which we can then test fully automated and frequency-selectively regulated with a ripple current of up to 600App at all our test stands. With the integration, valuable time and costs can be saved for our customers - a great plus in the current market environment.
