The Missing Strategy in Europe's Chip Ambitions 💡 Member States Must Drive the Next Steps 👏 by stiftung neue verantwortung - NOW: interface! #European #semiconductor #technology suppliers hold market-leading—sometimes monopolistic—positions at various points in the global semiconductor value chain. #Europe is home to competitive suppliers of #semiconductormanufacturing equipment, #chemicals, #sensors, #automotive #chips, and power #semiconductors, to name just a few. Because of the steep barriers to entry and close customer–supplier relationships, these are not easy markets to enter and successfully compete as a new company. The world depends on semiconductor technologies from European companies, and just as Europe depends on front- and back-end manufacturing in #Asia, Asian fabrication plants (fabs) depend on #manufacturing equipment and chemicals from European suppliers. Furthermore, manufacturers of #electricvehicles all over the world depend on chips from Europe. The list goes on. Semiconductors are a strategic asset to Europe, one that provides #geopolitical leverage—as other countries depend on access to our #technology. Because #semiconductors are at the epicenter of the #USA – #China technology rivalry, it is crucial for the #EuropeanUnion (#EU) to have a clear-eyed, well-informed semiconductor strategy rooted in current geopolitical reality. Unfortunately, the EU #ChipsAct is not a long-term semiconductor strategy with meaningful policy objectives but a collection of ideas and initiatives. This necessitates EU member states filling in the blanks—understand the competitive position of their domestic semiconductor industries; articulate why and to what end they want to support this sector, and what their long-term policy objectives are; and invest in their national administrative resources and brainpower. Doing all of that is a prerequisite to being able to engage in, as well as shape, policy discourse meaningfully at the EU level, vis-à-vis the United States and at the international level. If EU member state governments fail to enhance and intensify their efforts, there is a very real risk that the European #semiconductorindustry will lose its prominence in the global semiconductor value chain, and Europe would consequently have lost a strategic asset. Q2-2024 European Components Distribution (DMASS) Reports Lower Revenue in Second Quarter 2024. The contraction of the European components market continued in the second quarter of 2024, and the distribution industry was particularly affected. According to DMASS Europe e.V., the European components distribution market recorded a decline of 26.9% in the second quarter of 2024 across all components, with consolidated sales ending at 4.09 billion Euro. While IP&E (Interconnect, Passive and Electromechanical) components seem to normalize faster with a minus of only 12.9% to 1.48 billion Euro, #Semiconductors continue to bear the consequences of the massive growth in the last 3 years. Semi sales declined by 33.1% to 2.62 billion Euro (minor rounding error included). Semiconductor distribution sales in Europe shrank by 33.1% to 2.62 billion Euro, the lowest sales value since Q4/2021, but way above pre-#CoVID times. Quite notable were also regional differences, as shown in the table, with #Germany as the biggest market contracting significantly more than most bigger countries. #UK , #France, #Iberia and #EasternEurope “did better” than average. Hermann Reiter, chairman of DMASS: “When it came to sales, the second quarter hopefully did not surprise anyone. The low bookings of 2023 are now turning into equally low revenues. Due to still high inventory levels, especially in the semiconductor field, and due to macro-economic uncertainties, a return to growth in 2024 for distribution is unlikely or could happen earliest at the end of the year. However, as we can see, parts of the market – IP&E (Interconnect, Passive and #Electromechanical) – have started to normalize already, so our confidence that 2025 will see a return to growth is very high. What makes us a bit nervous is the low visibility within the #supplychain and the lack of longer-term procurement strategies. I would add this to his list of topics: Across the various provinces, China has supported the large-scale investments of many companies, from battery materials to cell manufacturing. There is now production over-capacity even compared to the local demand (i.e. fast growing domestic EV sector) plus the growing EV export from China to other countries. Thus, the competition is fierce between these Chinese companies, pushing the prices and the profit margins down. This is not just in terms of LFP batteries but also other cathode chemistries. In short, there is an average "delta in $/kWh" for EV OEMs of $50 or more between EV cells in China and EV cells purchased in Europe or USA. For a 70 kWh battery pack, this is $3500 cost difference... i.e. the entire OEM profit margin on a $35k car. #evbatteries

Partly to blame, the Trump bump turned into a speed bump -- including RFK Jr's pick to head HHS, which really hit Pharma stocks. It took the S&P 500 down 1.3%. The market's opinion on the prior day's earnings calls were -11% for after a 3% beat. Applied beat by 6%, but was hit on weak 1Q25 growth guidance based on a poor China demand outlook. Joe Moore at Morgan Stanley lowered Applied's price target based on export control and China uncertainty, weakness at Intel and Samsung, NAND's failure to recover to name a few. The overall market condition going into next year is weak, with China flooded with chip capacity. How does a product work from A to Z, how is certification works, what are the most challenging areas to design a system, and of course... How could we at TOP-electronics help the engineer to design a creative, cost effective and solid charger that could ramp up in volume. When you look at the system, Summit Electronics is able to deliver the AC or DC plug and receiver connector between the charger and the car. The Human interfacing (HMI) could be done by a 7” TFT with capacitive touchscreen, which is from Yeebo International Holdings Ltd, and is controlled by a base board that is controlled by a SOM from ASUS IoT. And payment is done with the RF-ID from ELATEC GmbH. The more powerful DC chargers are normally air-forced cooled by a fan, from SANYO DENKI EUROPE SA.. To have the communication independent from a local networks, a Quectel module (and antenna) for the best communication to the back office, and payments And more and more products are been used from TOP’s line-card. #Europe #Automakers Face Double Whammy of Chinese Onslaught, Emission Targets 💡 Europe’s established #automobile OEMs, already facing the onslaught of Chinese #EVs, are likely to find themselves caught in another headwind, which may potentially translate into billions of euros in fines. The latest challenge comes from the Euro 7 emission norms, which come into effect in July 2025. Under these norms, the fleet average emissions of new #cars should drop from the present 116 to 93 grams of CO2 per kilometer. Seeing our leaders understand more clearly than ever before that making business easier and faster in the Single Market is a must, could be a sign of a brand new approach on European policy-making. A welcome one. The notion that this mandate has to be time of investments, including in digital, strategic technologies, people and their skills as well as the idea of establishing the European Competitiveness Fund show a lot of promise for the coming years. #EU's New #China #Car Tariffs Risk Retaliation The #EuropeanUnion will slap additional tariffs of as much as 38.1% on #electricvehicles shipped from China as of next month, escalating a global #tradewar and upping the cost of selling #cars in #Europe for companies ranging from China’s BYD to Tesla. The bloc formally notified #carmakers of the levies due to be implemented around July 4, the EU executive said, following an investigation of subsidies that started last year. China’s #EV manufacturers have been pushing more aggressively into Europe amid a domestic price war and years of building a lead in the #technology. The individual duties on BYD will be 17.4%, GEELY 20% and SAIC 38.1%. Other producers that haven’t been sampled by the commission will be subject to a duty rate of 21%; carmakers that didn’t cooperate in the EU investigation will be subject to 38.1%.
