You can call me in 3 months - mid September" Me: "How about we book already a meeting in? Is easier for both so that we do not have to remember." Them: "Yes sure - 12th September in the morning?" Me: "I sent you the invite. Did you get it?" Them: "Yes, I just accepted" Works almost every single time Don’t hoard tasks - hoard meetings It is easier to handle PS: Some may say that they might not show up now. I say: still better to have a meeting in the calendar they need to cancel rather than a task that you call them again in 3 months

Hey Salespeople: Seeking best practices for B2B selling in Germany/DACH. I'll gather from comments into main post body here: - Prefer to buy from (local) German speakers (though some say this is becoming less critical than in the past) - Need examples of / references to similar customers using your solution successfully; far less willing to be an early adopter - Formality: Limited small talk. Be polite, respectful, and not overly-familiar. - Punctuality: Start on time / end on time - Detailed: More focused on technical details vs. marketing language. Facts & figures must be well supported. Be prepared to go deep in every meeting which means having a SME (sales engineer) involved from the start. Also, have plenty of robust collateral. - Quality-First: Quality and proven results are more important than price - More focused on security, privacy, & compliance - Process: Well structured sales process - Ensure your outreach is GDPR compliant. Respect do-not-call registries. Otherwise, cold calling is fine as long as your solution is relevant except in Austria. Cold-emailing is double opt-in (user signs up for list then clicks link in follow up email to confirm) and you must always provide an option to opt-out. - Provide local (German speaking) customer service - Legal negotiation tends to involve more back and forth; thus more expensive - Collaborative approach: Listen, discuss, and show expertise rather than assertively pitching.

I connected with 3 people on cold calls last week And booked 2 meetings The third was a German classic: "I am in a meeting" "where did you get my number from" "I do not take cold calls" beeeep Did not manage to book that one On the other hand, the two discussions I had very really good as well Here is the one on Friday, which was a call back: Me: "Patrick" Them: "Hey Patrick, it is Marlies at ACME University" Me: "Oh hi Maries. I called you didn't I?" Marlies: "Yes exactly" Me: "Thanks for calling me back. We actually do not know each other, I called you out of the blue. I was doing some research on your website and saw that you are responsible for e-learning." Marlies: "Yes I am indeed" Me: "Great. We are working with such Universities like ETH, EPFL, University St. Gallen because they have the following challenge: They not only use multiple choice questions in their exams but actually often use free text formats as well, which means that the professors have a lot of work correcting these exams - the answers of students can be really long and complex. At some Universities we work with, professors use up to 1 month every year for 2 exams and a total of 700 students to correct. Does that challenge sound familiar for you as well?" Marlies: "And I guess you solve that?" Me: "Exactly. We are using AI to either give feedback to students in case of a mock exam or we make a first correction of the exam and present that to the professors so that they can save 75% of the time the needed before Taskbase. Are free text formats something you use as well?" Marlies: "Yes absolutely. We use that format a lot. And we have a good platform for our teachers to have their exams published digitally. We also are looking into solutions to have content created automatically. However, we do not have a solution for what you propose as of yet. Can you send me something through email that I can study a bit?" Me: "Absolutely, I can definitely do that. Can I make a suggestion for next steps?" Marlies: "Sure" Me: "How about I send you something through email and we book a meeting in the next days with some people on the team so that you can also get insight into how exactly we do that with other Universities? That is usually easier for you as well other than reading emails and pdfs" Marlies: "Sounds good" Me: Booked a meeting with two people on her team PS: Always start your pitch with "they have the following challenge" so that you force yourself actually talking about a challenge rather than some features, functions or, even worse, marketing slang PPS: Sales leaders, you shall rehearse talking about that challenge again and again with your team. Every normal person should understand what they are talking about

The 3 biggest mistakes SaaS Founders make when trying to hire a DACH AE! In no particular order... 1. Long Interview process - It's a war on German sales talent right now & long processes are a fast way to ensure you lose out to competition. PS. You can still have a very thorough process take place within 3 weeks. 2. Lack of transparency - Too many founders sell the dream without giving full context to the current situation. PS. Share your challenges, ARR, quota attainment & mistakes to build trust in the interview process. 3. Treat the interviews as a one sided process - Too many founders spend every moment process trying to qualify the credentials of the candidate. PS. Ensure you factor in time to build a relationship and give all the info the candidate needs to make a decision. On average, a German AE we speak with is involved in 3 concurrent interview processes. He notes a profound market shift – an increase in diversified, specialized software providers and ineffective, technology-driven outreach attempts. The best B2B SaaS sales advice I’ve ever heard, is: “get crazily narrow on your ICP and messaging”. Going wider in customer profile makes intuitive sense. More to go at right? Going less extreme on messaging also makes sense. Don’t turn anyone off, right? Wrong. Most great companies built from a truly narrow base. Where the pain point was absolutely, 100%, without equivocation fixed by the software. Very few great companies come from a wide base. Trying to be all things to all people. If in doubt, niche down. There’s loads of books on this very factor. And blog posts. And substacks. And LI advice. Pretty much everyone involved in building SaaS startups agrees. But it’s soooo counter intuitive that surprisingly few founders truly embrace the concept. #founders #startups #vcfunding

Founders often do not know how to set targets for salespeople They open their financial plan (the plan that was created to impress investors) In that plan it says: "3 Mio. New ARR in the first year" They hire 3 sales reps and set their target at 1 Mio. for the first year After that year, none of them achieved their targets They fire all of them and blame the reps A recipe for disaster There is no faster way to demotivate salespeople than targets that cannot be reached -- In a startup, you cannot set targets top-down only like in the example above There is too much uncertainty, too many unknowns Here is how we approached it in the past 5 years: We checked that the financial plan first We found the number "3 Mio" as well We hired as many reps as were needed according to the following calculation: 3 x salary 1 = target rep 1 3 x salary 2 = target rep 2 ... target rep 1 + target rep 2 + target.... = 3 Mio Rule of thumb: The revenue a sales rep should generate is at least 3 times their salary. Ideally, this number will increase to 5x over time. We communicated to the team that we want to achieve 3 Mio That was our north star But then we approached goal-setting quarterly We sat together with the whole team at the end of each quarter and agreed on a target for two numbers: 1️⃣ Revenue next quarter 2️⃣ Funnel value with the close date in the next 3 quarters (to make sure we are on track) If we were far from what we expected, we agreed on something we could really believe in and that was ambitious at the same time In case we were behind, we worked hard on creating more funnel value that specific quarter The revenue target for the quarter was also the number that was relevant for the commission payment We did not actually have yearly targets Too much can change too quickly in the first 2 years you move from founder-led to sales-led sales

Leading sales teams remotely isn't easy Neither for the leaders nor for salespeople One important thing I learned leading > 30 salespeople all over Europe over the last 2 years: You should schedule time together rather often Here are a few regular sessions I usually put in our calendars: 1️⃣ Cold Calling Day (once a month): The whole team (SDRs, AEs, Operations) meets to call for one full day. Set a target for the day and see what the team can achieve together We often booked > 25 meetings on one day. Also helped us getting closer to the revenue target 2️⃣ Outreach / Cold Calling Sessions (2-3 hours, two times a week): The whole team focuses on outreach. These blockers are important for all salespeople so as to not lose focus on pipeline creation You might as well be doing it with the whole team? At the beginning of the session, we usually do a warmup with some mock calls 3️⃣ Weekly Sales Team Meeting (1-1.5 hours): Everybody shares what they achieved last week (most important advancements and new pipeline) There is usually a list of topics that needs to be discussed And knowledge should be shared (especially in early-stage companies) Everybody contributes 4️⃣ Weekly Call Coachings (1 hour): A sales rep is sharing a recorded call with everyone beforehand And the whole team is giving feedback on that call By showing parts of the recording 5️⃣ Weekly or Bi-weekly 1on1s wither every sales rep (30 min) Agenda: 1. How are you doing? 2. What is going well / where do we have room for improvement? 3. What do you need help with? 4. Career & personal development 5. Other topics? 6️⃣ Weekly 5-Ps coaching with the whole sales team (60 min): Someone prepares a late-stage deal by answering the questions below 👇🏻 The team asks questions Result: 2-3 immediate action items that help mitigate the risk to lose the deal Any other regular meetings you deemed useful with the sales team?

Sales Leaders - Avoid this Mistake! Please don’t give your SDRs access to Smartlead/Instantly and ask them to manage multichannel workflows like LinkedIn touchpoints and cold calling. It doesn’t integrate well with your CRM, dialler or data provider meaning it will make a simple workflow very complex. You might actually be better off with a traditional sales engagement platform like Outreach, SalesLoft, or even Lemlist (even though you're hearing something else from Linkedin.) Instead you should think of SmartLead/Instantly as an additional SDR on your team that can send emails at such a high volume and low cost. 𝗦𝗮𝗹𝗲𝘀 𝗖𝘆𝗰𝗹𝗲 - MM Sales Cycles increase with ACV - ENT Sales Cycles increase with ACV - But overall sales cycles decrease as ACV grows? This is obvious when we see the data separated. It’s also obvious if we think about it intuitively. But this is a trap we so often fall into. I finally experienced how it feels to "cold call" as a rep at Salesforce, Hubspot & co. Called the CEO of a publishing house Them: "Samuel Müller" Me: "Hi Samuel, its Patrick Trümpi at Taskbase calling, hello" Samuel: "Hi Patrick" Me: "Hi Samuel, we do not know each other. Do you mind giving me 30 seconds so that I can explain why I call you right now?" Samuel: "Yeah go ahead" Me: "We are working with many publishing houses such as klett, cornelsen who have the following challenge. They...." Samuel: "I actually know you guys" Me: "Ah really?" Samuel: "Yeah sure, we are working closely with the companies you mentioned" Me: "Ah wow. And what do you think about our technology?" Samuel: "I think.... Went into a very open conversation and Didn't book the meeting He was working with a competitor and was happy Probably something salespeople from Salesforce, Hubspot and co. encounter regularly as well 😅 I celebrate disqualification as much as booking a meeting ✌🏻
