First OpenAI's round, then SpaceX, now Lilium - my LinkedIn feed is full of sometimes more, sometimes less helpful comments on what's happening in the startup and scaleup world these days. So here's another less helpful post: I refrain from taking a clear position while not knowing all the details behind the current discussion - still, it's at least questionable that venture investors, typically known for preferring clean cap tables with purely financially incentivized investors, are now forming alliances to lobby for a credit by the German government. Yes, we need to position Germany as a leading deep tech hub to remain internationally competitive, but it's outside-in hard to believe that a 50m tax payer check is a decisive argument for future equity investors - particularly for a company that has raised north of 1.5bn in private means already. Don't get me wrong, I'd try to be one of the first guests in a Lilium jet once/if they ever fly at scale, but spending tax payer money to bear the risk no private investor is willing to take doesn't feel like the best use of our funds.

As an advanced Porsche mechanic, I'll take a systematic approach to identify the root cause of the grinding noise and slipping sensation on right turns. Given that the problem started during a day at the track, it's likely that the issue is related to the car's dynamics and suspension behavior under high-performance driving conditions. Here's my initial hypothesis: 1. **Tire wear and imbalance**: Aggressive driving on the track may have caused uneven tire wear, which could lead to vibrations and noise. I'll inspect the tires for any signs of uneven wear, and check the tire pressure to ensure it's within the recommended specifications. 2. **Suspension bushing wear**: Although the suspension components are new, it's possible that the bushings are worn out or damaged, causing the grinding noise. The driverless taxi company has rented a lot outside of an apartment building for the cars to idle in, but the vehicles appear to be honking at each other, as they are trained to do on the road when other cars get close to them. Randol White, who witnessed the honking activity, told CBS News that he heard "a pair of honks" on Wednesday around 4:30 a.m. Pacific time. He added that according to his neighbors, "peak honk" took place around 4:00 a.m. Waymo attributed the disruptive honking to a feature designed to avoid collisions. "We recently introduced a useful feature to help avoid low-speed collisions by honking if other cars get too close while reversing toward us," the company said in a statement to CBS News. "It has been working great in the city, but we didn't quite anticipate it would happen so often in our own parking lots." Waymo added that it has updated the software that causes the cars to honk "so our electric vehicles should keep the noise down for our neighbors moving forward." Video posted by White of more than two dozen cars all in the same lot, with some honking at each other, has circulated on social media. In his caption, White commented that he would have found the scene funny if it weren't taking place at 4 a.m. Software engineer Sophia Tung has set up a livestream of the lot on YouTube, telling The Verge that she likes watching the cars "come and go" but wishes they would stop honking at each other. Waymo's taxi service is currently available to anyone who download's the company's app in Phoenix, San Francisco and Los Angeles.

🔸 🔶 🔸 AI is going vertical 🔸 🔶 🔸 In a new guest article for Gründerszene / Business Insider I talk about how vertical AI is revolutionizing the work environment: After genAI took the world by storm it has rapidly commoditized. To train an advanced LLM costs hundreds of millions of $$$. But the usage of LLMs has become commonplace. Now the AI world is turning vertical: How can genAI solutions successfully be deployed within industry verticals? Not on the surface but solving some of the tough industrial challenges in a substantially new way, driving an increase in productivity by a factor of 2-5? That has become a core area of interest for AI in 2024. Vertical AI is already making inroads into a number of core industries such as consulting, finance and healthcare but is also being used in less obvious sectors such as wind energy generation or sports. Over time it is likely to affect our work environment across all sectors. And - unlike earlier automatizations - it is going to affect mostly white collar rather than blue collar work. Welcome to a new and lasting technological disruption. We’re excited to present to over 200 enterprises at Malt’s executive summit this and next week in Berlin and Munich (sign up link in comments). If you zoom in, the slide says “Now’s the time. Don’t get stuck with Anchovies”. What that means is that the war for talent is simple - if you don’t have a freelance strategy today, you’ll be locked out from the future workforce tomorrow. And unlike cloud computing, where being late meant cheap software, being late to the Human Cloud means an inability to access top talent, which means the inability to ship, grow, and innovate. And boy are there plenty of startups using freelance models to replace incumbents. I am currently working on a user behavior analysis to implement the results into a storyboard for content creation. How can humans at a global scale stay in the loop when deploying AI assistents for 100s of every day matters?

autonomous driving is becoming a reality, faster then we think - after a after a mini "AI-winter" in the field. an example where this shows already is robo-taxis: Waymo (funded by Alphabet, Silverlake, CPP) eg. now already runs over 100,000 rides weekly in SF, LA & Phoenix... - and eg Mercedes-Benz AG is now offering Level 3 autonomy, while largest EV maker BYD just announced a $14 billion investment on autonomous driving. moreover companies like Tesla, Cruise (backed by GM), Zoox (backed by Amazon), Wayve (backed by Uber and Softbank) are also all doubling down on AVs. the 100k rides a week by waymo are atm still a small number compared to Uber or Lyft (which rack up tens of millions rides a week globally) but it is obvious that the gross margins of these robo taxi rides are better... because the cost savings for driver salaries (and for insurance costs) are significant - even when accounting for the costs for autonomous driving hardware sensors such as Lidar and our DTCF | DeepTech & Climate Fonds portfolio company FERNRIDE is bringing autonomous trucking solutions to the European logistics industry!

🤖 How ChatGPT and LLMs continue to amaze me! E.g 1 - Effortlessly classify a list of names into male and female—just from an image. “Today in our CrossFit class, we tackled deadlifts, with everyone doing their 1-rep max. Afterward, my coach and I got curious about the average weight for both males and females in our community. Being a bit lazy 😅, I decided to let ChatGPT do the heavy lifting! I shared a simple image and asked it the following: 1. Extract the name and weight of each participant. 2. Split them into male and female categories. 3. Calculate the average weight for each group. Now, while fetching the data and calculating the average was basic, what really blew me away was how it could accurately segregate names into male and female categories. (Though, it did misclassify two names… not bad imo!) P.S. Our community is strong 💪: Male Avg: 128.5 kg Female Avg: 86.61 kg Mine - 95 kg (I know i have a huge scope of improvement!) In “Do software companies actually have good margins?”, Benn Stancil makes a case for a counterintuitive point : Software companies are much less profitable than they might seem. Why? Because the research & development costs associated with software should be part of their cost of goods sold. Software companies don’t invest once in R&D & then sell copies of the software as we did in the 90s on CDs. It’s software-as-a-service. So the costs of developing & maintaining the software are ongoing. If that argument is correct, then the average gross margin of a software company in the public domain would fall from 72% to 47%. Quite a stark difference. Profitability for software companies isn’t straightforward. Different accounting rules govern revenue & cost recognition. In 2017, the industry migrated from ASC 605 to ASC 606, which are financial arcana as esoteric as it reads. Overnight, some companies were more profitable & others were not. So let’s set profitability aside for a minute, & look at free-cash flow yield. Free cash flow yield offers investors or stockholders a better measure of a company’s fundamental performance than the widely used P/E ratio. Investors who wish to employ the best fundamental indicator should add free cash flow yield to their repertoire of financial measures. FCFY is a metric that measures this : how much of a company’s revenue, after funneling through every cost imaginable, is left over in its bank account at the end of the year. That’s my mental model for it, anyway. Software companies top the charts at 3% over the last 20 years, according to data from New Constructs, a financial research firm. For a period from December 9, 2009, to approximately March of 2016, technology companies produced nearly 5% free cash flow yields on average. There are times when other sectors yield more. For example, energy tops the list at the moment, primarily driven by the fluctuations in those markets. But over two decades technology tops the list. And if AI fulfills anywhere close to its promise, we should expect that trend to continue. Despite the enthusiasm from Investopedia, I think it’s important to say that no financial metric is perfect & all of them are proxies for the ultimate performance of a business. Free cash flow yield has its imperfections & nuances like any other metric.

The August release of the Jamba-1.5 models, scaled versions of the Jamba models from March 2024, went largely unnoticed. But it's important, as it is the first really large non-transformer LLM (spoiler, it's an SSM-Transformer hybrid)!
