Start-ups in Europe: a light at the end of the tunnel - finally!    This article by Nadine Schimroszik in Handelsblatt gives reason for hope for the tech ecosystem, as it summarises a development that has been tentatively emerging for some time: The number of new #start-ups in Germany is growing again, by 17 per cent, as shown by a comparison of the first quarter of 2024 with the same quarter of the previous year.   💡It is particularly interesting to see that most investments are being made in AI. An unmistakable sign that they continue to be a driver of innovation for the German startup ecosystem.   We recently came to a similar conclusion with my team, as part of our analysis of the German startup landscape. Our conclusion: more and more funding are being mobilised for ♻️ #Greentech business ideas that are based on AI-based technologies and have a positive impact on our planet. 𝗦𝘁𝗼𝗽 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗳𝗶𝗰𝗸𝗹𝗲 𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗺𝘂𝗻𝗶𝗰𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 🛑 I had the great pleasure of attending #Voices2024 by Staffbase in Berlin last week together with Johanna to talk about internal communication at Mytheresa. In particular, we focused on how communication can build bridges and contribute to sustainable employee engagement. Kudos to Johanna, her enthusiasm is simply infectious 🙏 I particularly enjoyed the presentation by Dr. Marie-Agnes Strack-Zimmermann, who - contrary to the widespread communicative fickleness in politics - gave a thrilling speech on the necessity of communicative clarity and the sustainable pursuit of goals 💡 Some core elements of good communication: 📣 𝗖𝗼𝗺𝗺𝘂𝗻𝗶𝗰𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗯𝗲𝗴𝗶𝗻𝘀 𝘄𝗶𝘁𝗵 𝗰𝗹𝗲𝗮𝗿 𝗴𝗼𝗮𝗹𝘀 - good communication cannot succeed without a clear definition of goals, which is why the duty (goal description) comes before the art (communication). Sounds trivial, but in my experience it is often unclear. It is helpful to start by drawing up a one-pager (in writing!) that lists risks and opportunities, stakeholders, resistances, interim goals, etc. in addition to the goals. 📣 𝗖𝗼𝗺𝗺𝘂𝗻𝗶𝗰𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗰𝗮𝗻𝗻𝗼𝘁 𝗯𝗲 𝗳𝗶𝗰𝗸𝗹𝗲 - while the goal plan is aimed at a smaller audience (e.g. project group), communication is generally aimed at a larger audience (e.g. workforce). Subsequent adjustments in communication have a counterproductive effect on goal setting, especially if they lead to ambiguities in the target image for the wider audience. 📣 𝗖𝗼𝗺𝗺𝘂𝗻𝗶𝗰𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗺𝘂𝘀𝘁 𝗯𝗲 𝗶𝗻𝘃𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝘁𝗮𝗿𝗴𝗲𝘁 𝗴𝗿𝗼𝘂𝗽-𝗼𝗿𝗶𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗱 - Good communication creates curiosity, invites the addressees to join the journey, motivates and is target group-oriented. I still see internal communications that are correct in terms of content but lack these characteristics. A workshop we held some time ago on simple and inclusive communication is still an eye-opener for me. 📣 𝗬𝗼𝘂 𝗱𝗼𝗻'𝘁 𝗻𝗲𝗲𝗱 𝘁𝗼 𝗯𝗲 𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗿𝘆𝗯𝗼𝗱𝘆'𝘀 𝗱𝗮𝗿𝗹𝗶𝗻𝗴 - senders sometimes find it difficult to communicate content that is challenging for the target group and are therefore inclined to embellish and add unnecessary serifs to communications. This tends to cause confusion and increase frustration. In my opinion, clarity takes precedence over beauty in communication 📣 𝗔𝘂𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗶𝗰𝗶𝘁𝘆 𝗶𝘀 𝗸𝗶𝗻𝗴 - authentic communication that corresponds to the sender takes precedence over a publication that has been rinsed, cross-checked five times over and improved by several editors. In the end, this may lead to correct content, but also to an impersonal result 📣 𝗦𝗵𝗮𝗿𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗶𝘀 𝗰𝗮𝗿𝗶𝗻𝗴 - you can't not communicate and there is hardly a form of appreciation more respectful than sharing information. Communication is particularly appreciative when it preempts the question. 𝑾𝒉𝒂𝒕 𝒐𝒕𝒉𝒆𝒓 𝒄𝒉𝒂𝒓𝒂𝒄𝒕𝒆𝒓𝒊𝒔𝒕𝒊𝒄𝒔 𝒐𝒇 𝒈𝒐𝒐𝒅 𝒄𝒐𝒎𝒎𝒖𝒏𝒊𝒄𝒂𝒕𝒊𝒐𝒏 𝒅𝒐 𝒚𝒐𝒖 𝒔𝒆𝒆?

Have a defined horizon & create a clear plan. Have some urgency to get things done at some point. Execute very transparently and reliably. 2/ Stick to your narrative. But don't do it blindly. Tweak it when necessary. Adapt it. Don't let yourself be surprised by major changes. Keep focusing on delivering according to your strategy & plan. 3/ Fundraising is a marathon with many sprints. There are moments when you'll ask yourself - Why do I do this? Is it gonna work out? But don't get too negative during the down phases. Adapting and pivoting is part of our job. Salary Guide 2024 - Venture Capital DACH The last two years were crisis years for many start-ups. The volume of financing fell by almost two thirds. The reasons for this are persistently high interest rates and high inflation, coupled with a recession and a difficult geopolitical situation. Added to this is the further withdrawal of foreign investors from financing German start-ups, particularly from the USA. Nevertheless, experts are optimistic about the current year, not least because of the enormous potential in the artificial intelligence and clean tech sectors. This optimistic outlook for 2024 is also reflected in the salaries of VC company employees. These have remained relatively stable and, in some cases, have seen a positive upward trend. #investmentbanking

I still cannot find the right words to capture the magic of the evening and the incredible quartet on stage! Let me at least summarize my learnings from our amazing speakers: 🔸 Ebony Simone Morczinek, CFO at Blacklane "Everything in life starts with a thought. Our thoughts create this reality. So please envision your future. And think big in numbers." For Ebony, it’s 10 million. Her presence transforms every room into a cathedral. She embodies what it means to deserve space and be confident. Her biggest advice still gives me goosebumps: "Know your trauma before you enter a negotiation!" 🔸 Dr. Martina Pesic, Negotiation Expert This woman is obsessed with negotiations. She wrote her diploma and PhD on negotiation. You can even book her for "shadow negotiation." Her key advice: Be prepared and know your tactics. She empowered us women (and male allies) in the room: Don’t introduce numbers too early before you’ve sold your value. A number is like an anchor—the first number sticks. 🔸 Stefanie Voss, Leadership Coach She is truly an adventurer; Stefanie sailed around the world! Her claim is: be a pirate, not a princess when entering negotiations! Pirates have one core superpower: Audacity! It’s the conscious decision to move beyond fear ("I don’t dare to..."), shame ("What will people think..."), conventions ("The status quo..."), and rules ("This is how it is done"). I loved how she provided concrete examples of how to train your audacity with tiny habits. For example, walk up to a policewoman and thank her for keeping us safe during the European soccer cup. 🔸 Coco Decrouppé, Leadership Coach 🥅⚽️👩‍🏫 Coco is from Austria, and she chose to spend time with us rather than watch the Austrian soccer team win last night! What a coach! She introduced us to her 'The Soccer Field Model©️,' a tool she developed to understand the driving forces in negotiations. What I will never forget: Negotiation starts with Level 1: focus on myself! If I don’t care for my emotions, I won’t set clear boundaries. Kudos to our moderator 🎤Antje Venjakob, who orchestrated the evening with such a lovely flow! A huge thank you to Blacklane and in particular Brenda Omari & Abigail Pfeiffer for hosting this event. Europe’s Innovation Paradox: Ideas That Don’t Take Off What separates world-changing ideas from global leadership? My colleague Peter Niederhauser, co-founder and General Partner at redalpine, captures the essence of this dilemma in his thought-provoking guest commentary for the NZZ the leading Swiss newspaper: Capital and a Strong Venture Culture. Europe has no shortage of talent, cutting-edge ideas, and innovation hubs. From AI and clean energy to biotech, the potential is immense. Yet, the harsh reality is that our startups often struggle to grow beyond regional success. Why? Because we lack the fuel that powers the engine of innovation: venture capital. Here are some key insights from Peter’s article: 1) World-Class Talent, Capital Gaps Institutions e.g. ETH Zürich, Technische Universität München, University of Oxford, University of Cambridge, and Nordic universities are producing groundbreaking intellectual output. But ideas alone are not enough. Europe’s capital gap—especially for high-growth startups—is staggering, leaving incredible ideas stuck in the starting blocks. 2) Why the U.S. Wins the Innovation Race The U.S. has an unparalleled edge, thanks to institutional investors like pension funds and tech titans. Consider this: Amazon invests $70B in R&D annually, compared to just $1.5B by European giants like Nestlé. This massive capital imbalance explains why Silicon Valley has become the global epicenter of tech. 3) The Unicorn Exodus Since 2000, 40 European unicorns have relocated abroad—primarily to the U.S. What does this mean for Europe? Lost talent. Lost growth. Lost opportunity. As Peter points out, “Venture capital isn’t just private financing—it’s the engine that turns innovation into a thriving economy.” Without the right venture ecosystem, Europe risks being the land of brilliant ideas that never reach global impact.

The mood continues to improve 📈 Sentiment among startup investors in Germany improved in the first quarter of 2024, according to the KfW and BVK Investor Barometer. The indicator rose by 6.7 points to minus 20.5. The improvement is primarily attributed to the prospect of interest rate cuts, which make investments more attractive.
